Book excerpt: London to Cape Town overland by Panther and sidecar, pulling a trailer. No roads, no backup -- just straight across the Sahara through equatorial Africa, and South to the Cape -- in 1935, without even a compass! This is quite simply the most incredible Panther journey ever! Undeterred by nomads, sand drifts, heat, rain, rivers, breakdowns and politics, Theresa Wallach and Florence Blenkiron completed a journey that might well defeat a modern bike. From oasis to oasis arguing with the French Foreign Legion for permission to continue, and winning; fashioning a tow hitch for the trailer when it broke in the desert; rebuilding the entire engine from scratch in Agadez; meeting gorillas, lions and snakes on the road, staying in African villages and meeting an amazing variety of friendly and helpful people. Not to mention having an accident in Tanganyika (Tanzania) with the only car seen on the road for days!

Book excerpt: After losing his cherished wife of sixty-three years to leukaemia, Don joined a writing group called The Centre Wellington Writers (thewellies.com). What he wrote was a mix of fiction and non-fiction, both realistic and larger than life. The First Year compiles ninety-seven stories from Don’s first year of writing for fun, ranging from fifty-word micro-stories to a 30,000-word novella. Follow entrepreneurs as they fight against and try to outsmart the odds. Dive into “Nurena,” a science-fiction novella about a hostile planet, crypto-currency, and an oppressive regime. Rescue loons from a frozen lake, read along with a children’s story, reminisce about loved ones and times past, revive a failing company, and travel the stars. D. Burton Smith has worked as a chartered accountant, general manager, university educator and productivity consultant. Over the course of his career he visited over a hundred companies to examine their factories, products and records to help optimize their operations. He has written hundreds of reports, cases, articles and teaching notes over a sixty-year career, but for the first time he was writing from what was in his head.

What they dont see, is her struggle with a debilitating mental illness over the last ten years. From facing depressed lows so extreme that in-patient hospitalization as a result of suicidal behavior was needed, to mania so frighteningly fast paced that she married a man after knowing him only three months and divorced two years later, Camillas bipolar renders her life anything but easy or by the book, which is why she chose to write one.

Book excerpt: Patient-healthcare worker communication is the cornerstone of an informed and patient-centered approach to healthcare. It is continually stressed throughout all aspects of medical training and practice, but this can be impaired by the myriad of medical jargon and complex pathophysiology required in explaining a patient’s condition. This book aims to provide a comprehensive reference of analogies which simplify and make the most common medical conditions that patients may question about or be afflicted with comprehensible. There is need for an efficient way to translate years of study and experiential learning from the doctor and healthcare professional to the patient. The book contains over 200 analogies that span across 19 chapters covering a wide variety of medicine specialties, including but not limited to cardiology, dermatology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, and more. Each chapter follows a consistent format: a condition is given, the analogy title for the condition is given, and then the analogy is explained in the body text. The authors took some of the most common encountered medical conditions and attributed them to digestible analogies that help bridge the gap between healthcare professional to patient. Medical Analogies for Clinician-Patient Communication: Innovative Strategies for Improving the Clinical Encounter serves as a fruitful reference for anyone wanting to communicate profoundly with their patients without forfeiting brevity.

Book excerpt: The intention of this work is to endeavor to unravel the intricate web in which the mystery (of freemasonry) is involved, by tracing the order back to its source, and, by showing its intimate connection and similitude to institutions more ancient, put it beyond a doubt, that it sprang from and is a continuation of the rites and ceremonies observed in those establishments. That the writer, as a freemason, is extremely liberal, may be judged from his own reprobation of the oaths imposed upon members. He considers a total abandonment of the oaths, at the present day, requisite. He says that the mysteries, from which the institution was derived, created, and that the custom of the times when it was established, sanctioned the most horrible oaths. The argument used, that these oaths are no longer necessary, is, we think, effectual against the existence of Masonry itself.

Not illustrated. 1866 edition. Excerpt: ... REMARKS ON THJ5 ROUTE ACROSS ARABIA, FROM EL-KATIF IN THE PERSIAN GULF TO YAMRO IN THE RED SEA. With a view to elucidate the general direction of my route, to mark the probable relative positions of the intervening towns or places which I passed in this journey, and to render the narrative of His Excellency Ibrahim Pacha's exploits more clear, I have affixed a route across Arabia from Katif to Yambo. During the first stages I was obliged to guess at the distances, not being as yet sufficiently acquainted with the pace and gait of the camel to form an idea of the rate at which we were moving; a few days' observation and timing the animal's pace enabled me to form a tolerably correct opinion, and thence deduce a rate for my general guidance, by calculating from the number of hours we were actually on the march. For marches not exceeding eight hours I calculated three miles an hour, and for inarches exceeding that number of hours I lessened the computed distance to two and half and to two and three-quarter miles per hour, making a deduction in some cases for hilly and rocky ground. The general direction of the line of march I took frequently with a very good compass, always alighting from my camel, its motion being too rough to admit of a compass being used even when in a walk. Prom Katif we proceeded by broken stages to Oomerrubeeah in the desert, and thence by a retrograde and circuitous route to Ul Ahsa, * from whence we returned very unexpectedly to Oomerrubeeah by a different route. Ou laying down the track thus far there does not appear to be any considerable error, as the distances and bearings which I had taken brought me within seven or eight miles of my first calculation. From this point we again set out with the intention of...
