Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rube Burrow: King of Outlaws, and His Band of Train Robbers: An Accurate and Faithful History of Their Exploits and Adventures It is the province of this volume, therefore, not to laud evil endeavor, but rather to chronicle the hapless fate of those who, turning aside from the paths of peace and honor, elect to tread the cdevious and thorny road which leads on to the Open gateway, over which is emblazoned, etters of living fire, the accursed malediction, All hope abandon, ye who enter here. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lamar County, Alabama is a wonderful place to live. It is quiet here, you know your neighbor and they know you; we live the good life. In Rube Burrow's time, that quiet wonderful life was interrupted by "outsiders", or "intruders", coming into the county for various reasons and carelessly judging our people. Legends of Rube Burrow have been told for over one hundred years. I never tire of hearing another Rube Burrow story. As you read this collection of years of research, you are entitled to your own opinion. It is not my intent to open old family wounds. I know the persons mentioned in this book are someone's father, mother, grandfather, grandmother or other relative. As I have told my boys, "I don't always love what you do, but I always love you." I am sure that the parents and other family members of Rube Burrow and Gang felt the same. I hope this book is accepted in the spirit it is written. Based on my research, Rube Burrow was daring, reckless, witty and loved his family. He was very determined. I found where one person said, "He's got grit" and that he had. He was called ignorant by those who tried to capture him. But ignorant or not, reports are that Southern Express Company spent over $20,000 trying to capture him. Hundreds of detectives and lawmen chased him over several states and in the end, two Black men, Jesse Hildreth and Frank Marshall did what many detectives had tried to do. In an interview Jesse said they didn't know who he was, if they had known they would not have bothered him.It seems Rube Burrow possessed a certain charm and charisma, and he had friends and kinsmen everywhere. We have stories passed though generations where time and again, he helped someone. We don't know why he became a robber, only Rube can tell us that and he is not here. Many mysteries surround the life and time of Rube Burrow. Today, we wonder and speculate. Meanwhile I continue to research through historical newspapers, records and legends looking for answers to my questions. I have uncovered information of interest in the death of Postmaster Graves, about famous outlaw Eugene Bunch's visit in Lamar County. You'll have to read that story.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over a year, Railroad Bill eluded sheriffs, private detectives hired by the L&N line, and bounty hunters who traveled across the country to match guns with the legendary desperado. The African American outlaw was wanted on multiple charges of robbery and murder, and rumor had it that he stole from the rich to give to the poor. He terrorized busy train lines from east of Mobile to the Florida Panhandle, but as soon as the lawmen got close, he disappeared into the bayous and pine forests--until one day his luck ran out, and he was gunned down inside a general store in Atmore, Alabama. Little is known about Railroad Bill before his infamy--not his real name or his origins. His first recorded crime, carrying a repeating rifle without a license, led him into a gunfight with a deputy and made him a wanted man throughout Florida in 1894. His most celebrated escape--a five-day foot chase with scores of men and several bloodhounds--led to tales of Railroad's supernatural ability to transmogrify into an animal or inanimate object at will. As his crimes progressed from robbing boxcars to wounding trainmen to murdering sheriffs, more and more reward money was offered for his capture--dead or alive. Today, Railroad Bill is the subject of many folk songs popularized by singers such as Paul McCartney, Taj Mahal, Gillian Welch, and Ramblin' Jack Elliot. But who was he? Where did he come from? What events led to his murderous spree? And why did some view him as a hero? In Railroad Bill, Larry Massey separates fact from myth and teases out elusive truths from tall tales to ultimately reveal the man behind the bandit's mask.
