Book Synopsis Multimedia Applications, Services and Techniques - ECMAST'99 by : Helmut Leopold
Download or read book Multimedia Applications, Services and Techniques - ECMAST'99 written by Helmut Leopold and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-06-26 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The liberalisation in the telecommunication market and thus the advent of competition has had a tremendous impact on business in this area. New operators have started to offer telecommunication services in competition with the classical national network operators. This in turn will have an impact on the market share, the tariff structure, the Quality of Service (QoS) and the services offered to the end customers. A way to maintain or increase revenue for network operators is to additionally offer new services to the customers. The final target is a so-called "Full Service Network (FSN)", which is capable of offering all types of bi-directional multimedia services. The provisioning of new telecommunication services in general and new multimedia services in particular is made possible by the availability of several new technologies as well as through advances in standardisation. R&D policies world-wide but especially in Europe have forced the development of new networking technologies such as ATM, xDSL and HFC as well as new video technologies as defined by DVB and DAVIC.
Book Synopsis Multimedia Networks by : Hans W. Barz
Download or read book Multimedia Networks written by Hans W. Barz and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2016-01-12 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transportation of multimedia over the network requires timely and errorless transmission much more strictly than other data. This had led to special protocols and to special treatment in multimedia applications (telephony, IP-TV, streaming) to overcome network issues. This book begins with an overview of the vast market combined with the user’s expectations. The base mechanisms of the audio/video coding (H.26x etc.) are explained to understand characteristics of the generated network traffic. Further chapters treat common specialized underlying IP network functions which cope with multimedia data in conjunction which special time adaption measures. Based on those standard functions these chapters can treat uniformly SIP, H.248, High-End IP-TV, Webcast, Signage etc. A special section is devoted to home networks which challenge high-end service delivery due to possibly unreliable management. The whole book treats concepts described in accessible IP-based standards and which are implemented broadly. The book is aimed at graduate students/practitioners with good basic knowledge in computer networking. It provides the reader with all concepts of currently used IP technologies of how to deliver multimedia efficiently to the end user.

Book excerpt: "Tressell: The Real Story of 'The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists' describes the author's life, puts the book in its historical context and traces its success over the past ninety-odd years. It shows that The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists is about socialist values and their continued relevance at a time when we are being told that capitalism is here for ever; that greed is good; that war, famine, poverty, racism and oppression are natural, normal and permanent features of life on Planet Earth. Crucially, Tressell's passionate, compassionate denunciation of the capitalist 'system' is about hope, so little wonder The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists is selling very well indeed in these anti-capitalist days."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: Now in its fourth edition, the ground-breaking Artech House bestseller SIP: Understanding the Session Initiation Protocol offers you the most comprehensive and current understanding of this revolutionary protocol for call signaling and IP Telephony. The fourth edition incorporates changes in SIP from the last five years with new chapters on internet threats and attacks, WebRTC and SIP, and substantial updates throughout. This cutting-edge book shows how SIP provides a highly-scalable and cost-effective way to offer new and exciting telecommunication feature sets, helping practitioners design “next generation” network and develop new applications and software stacks. Other key discussions include SIP as a key component in the Internet multimedia conferencing architecture, request and response messages, devices in a typical network, types of servers, SIP headers, comparisons with existing signaling protocols including H.323, related protocols SDP (Session Description Protocol) and RTP (Real-time Transport Protocol), and the future direction of SIP.
Book Synopsis Communication Research Statistics by : John C. Reinard
Download or read book Communication Research Statistics written by John C. Reinard and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2006-04-20 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "While most books on statistics seem to be written as though targeting other statistics professors, John Reinard′s Communication Research Statistics is especially impressive because it is clearly intended for the student reader, filled with unusually clear explanations and with illustrations on the use of SPSS. I enjoyed reading this lucid, student-friendly book and expect students will benefit enormously from its content and presentation. Well done!" --John C. Pollock, The College of New Jersey Written in an accessible style using straightforward and direct language, Communication Research Statistics guides students through the statistics actually used in most empirical research undertaken in communication studies. This introductory textbook is the only work in communication that includes details on statistical analysis of data with a full set of data analysis instructions based on SPSS 12 and Excel XP. Key Features: Emphasizes basic and introductory statistical thinking: The basic needs of novice researchers and students are addressed, while underscoring the foundational elements of statistical analyses in research. Students learn how statistics are used to provide evidence for research arguments and how to evaluate such evidence for themselves. Prepares students to use statistics: Students are encouraged to use statistics as they encounter and evaluate quantitative research. The book details how statistics can be understood by developing actual skills to carry out rudimentary work. Examples are drawn from mass communication, speech communication, and communication disorders. Incorporates SPSS 12 and Excel: A distinguishing feature is the inclusion of coverage of data analysis by use of SPSS 12 and by Excel. Information on the use of major computer software is designed to let students use such tools immediately. Companion Web Site! A dedicated Web site includes a glossary, data sets, chapter summaries, additional readings, links to other useful sites, selected "calculators" for computation of related statistics, additional macros for selected statistics using Excel and SPSS, and extra chapters on multiple discriminant analysis and loglinear analysis. Intended Audience: Ideal for undergraduate and graduate courses in Communication Research Statistics or Methods; also relevant for many Research Methods courses across the social sciences

Book Synopsis Digital Video Concepts, Methods, and Metrics by : Shahriar Akramullah
Download or read book Digital Video Concepts, Methods, and Metrics written by Shahriar Akramullah and published by Apress. This book was released on 2014-11-05 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Digital Video Concepts, Methods, and Metrics: Quality, Compression, Performance, and Power Trade-off Analysis is a concise reference for professionals in a wide range of applications and vocations. It focuses on giving the reader mastery over the concepts, methods and metrics of digital video coding, so that readers have sufficient understanding to choose and tune coding parameters for optimum results that would suit their particular needs for quality, compression, speed and power. The practical aspects are many: Uploading video to the Internet is only the beginning of a trend where a consumer controls video quality and speed by trading off various other factors. Open source and proprietary applications such as video e-mail, private party content generation, editing and archiving, and cloud asset management would give further control to the end-user. Digital video is frequently compressed and coded for easier storage and transmission. This process involves visual quality loss due to typical data compression techniques and requires use of high performance computing systems. A careful balance between the amount of compression, the visual quality loss and the coding speed is necessary to keep the total system cost down, while delivering a good user experience for various video applications. At the same time, power consumption optimizations are also essential to get the job done on inexpensive consumer platforms. Trade-offs can be made among these factors, and relevant considerations are particularly important in resource-constrained low power devices. To better understand the trade-offs this book discusses a comprehensive set of engineering principles, strategies, methods and metrics. It also exposes readers to approaches on how to differentiate and rank video coding solutions.
