Book excerpt: One of the most iconic incidents of the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 was the charge of the Scots Greys, a crack cavalry regiment, into the heart of the French army. It was a moment of supreme daring and horse-riding skill, and Sergeant Ewart of the Greys succeeded in snatching one of Napoleon's coveted eagle standards. However it was also a military blunder. The Greys were quickly surrounded by enemy cavalry and cut to pieces. Of the regiment's 442 officers and men almost half, 198, were killed or injured. In the end the battle was won by the British and their allies and the eagle of the French 45th regiment is now on show in Edinburgh Castle. Iain Gale brings the bare outline of this legendary military exploit to life, giving the stories of the men involved and reconstructing the prelude, the aftermath, life in the Greys and the Battle of Waterloo as a whole. It is a uniquely exciting story of courage and military tactics in the heat of war.

Book excerpt: HESH TANK ON.......ON......LOADED......FIRE.........LASING......FIRING NOW......TARGET! The battle had begun. At approximately 1130 hrs on the 25th February, 1991, 3rd troop as part of D squadron of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, the Desert Rats, crossed the border breach into Iraq. Orders had been received. Proceed to objective Copper and locate the Iraqi 12th Armoured Division HQ communication site. Destroy it. In August 1990, Saddam Hussein with his massive army invaded the small provincial neighbouring state of Kuwait. The UN initially imposed sanctions and later, endorsed military intervention to remove the Iraqi occupation. This required the participation of thousands of servicemen and women from the numerous coalition countries. By the end of February 1991, an oppressed, ransacked and destroyed country was eventually liberated. This is a small part of that operation - our tank troop. It is a story of twelve very ordinary men and their three main battle Challenger tanks, living several months in the desert with intensive training that was followed by eventual combat. It has always been our own private personal story which after 30 years, can still make us laugh and alternatively, can also make us sad. It is now time to share this story with others. Garry Paton served in the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards as a tank crewman for four years which included active duty during Operation Granby, October 1990 to March 1991. From that military operation, he has collected and summarised in one book a significant number of photographs, maps, notes and diary entries. This material is further supplemented by extensive collaboration with previous colleagues. The result is a comprehensive, detailed and personnel account of what it is like to live, work and fight within a tank troop during Operation Granby, the 'Gulf War'.

Download or read book Those Terrible Grey Horses written by Stephen Wood and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-05-24 with total page 1409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 18 June 1815, the Royal Scots Greys charged Napoleon's infantry columns, capturing the eagle of the French 45th Infantry. Napoleon is said to have commented of the regiment, 'Ah, ces terribles chevaux gris (those terrible grey horses)'. Today that eagle is the regimental badge of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, Scotland's senior regiment and her only regular cavalry. The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards and their antecedents have been involved in every major British campaign since the 17th century. Here Stephen Wood tells the story of glorious cavalry charges and terrifying tank battles, from the Western Front to the liberation of Basra. Stunning paintings bring the narrative to life while contemporary photography depicts both the horror and the compassion of modern warfare as witnessed by the officers and troopers of this unique regiment.
