Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Triumph of the Amateurs is the story of the lost world or professional rowing in America, a sport that attracted crowds of thousands, widespread betting, and ultimately corruption that foretold its doom. It centers on the colorful careers of two New York City Irish boys, the Biglin brothers John and Barney, now long forgotten save for Thomas Eakins's portraits of them in their shell. If the bestseller The Boys in the Boat portrayed the good guys of the U.S.’s 1936 Olympic crew, the Biglins, along with their colleagues and successors, were the Bad Boys in the Boat. Rascals abounded on and off the water, where rowdy fans often outdid modern soccer thugs in violence, betting was rampant—as was fixing—and spectators in the tens of thousands came out to see it all. The Triumph of the Amateurs traces the sport from its rise in the years before the Civil War on through the Gilded Age to its scandalous demise and eventual transition into a purely amateur sport. In addition, Barney Biglin’s later career as holder of sinecures offers a colorful glimpse into late 19th-century New York City political corruption. Illustrated with 40 black and white and color illustrations, including Thomas Eakins's famous paintings of the Biglin brothers rowing on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia in 1872.

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1871 edition. Excerpt: ... will not be a single racing shell built for American waters to carry a coxswain. In regard to a race in which all other things are equal, and one crew carries a coxswain, and in the other the bow oarsman steers, "the result," says Com. Benj. F. Brady, "depends upon what kind of coxswain one crew has, and what kind of a bow-oarsman the other.' This is the whole thing in a nutshell, and should be taken into consideration, by those who imagine that the mere fact of a crew not carrying a coxswain will ensure them victory over another which employs one. What Americans claim is, that a bow-oarsman can, with sufficient practice, and there are scores who have it, do his work at the oar and steer the boat as well. This is denied by most Englishmen, who assert the impossibility of a man's "doing two things at one time," as a sufficient reason for understanding why one man cannot fill the two offices, of oarsman and steerer, while they are afraid to test their system with the American, by entering one of their boats with a "worse than useless" against an American boat steered by the bow oar. However, they will ultimately be obliged to adopt this system, as, although many of their oarsmen are obstinate and determined to frown down foreign "innovations," there are many others who are liberal-minded men, disposed to look favorably on anything likely to advance the cause. The eoxswainless boats are to be seen upon almost every boating course in America, and are doubtless familiar sights to every reader of this book. The bow-oarsman has his feet placed against a cross-piece in the bottom of the boat, to which are attached, one on each side, two wire lines, reaching aft through small "eyes" to the rudder, making a miniature "walking-beam" in the boat. Book excerpt: This book seeks to redress the balance of reporting in the sport's literature which has always favoured the activities of aquatic gentlemen at the public schools, Oxford and Cambridge Universities, Henley Regatta and on the River Thames. This study focuses on the many who helped instigate and nurture the sport but who have been forgotten due to their not being associated with the elite of the sport.
