Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children think in a different way to adults. They also think differently at different ages. This book, originally published in 1984, studies the growth of those processes by means of which thinking evolves from infancy through childhood and adolescence into adulthood. It covers perception, memory, language and, above all, the development of mental ‘programmes’, or strategies, through which people structure and hence comprehend the information coming to them from their environment. The study of cognitive development has obvious educational implications. Development in the pre-school period, the appropriateness of schooling for levels of cognitive competence, and the significance of ageing are just some of the issues considered.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces students of education to the elements of educational psychology. It also relates as closely as possible the findings of research to classroom practice. In order to make clear the fundamental processes involved in psychological development, the book starts with a study of the way in which the young child adapts its behaviour to its environment. This study considers some of the key aspects of physical development, mainly the central nervous system. At the same time the way physical growth and psychological development are influenced by the experience of the individual is also discussed. This discussion of development is followed by an examination of the processes of learning, with particular attention paid to the works of Piaget. The salient points of each chapter are brought together in a summary which may be used by the reader to obtain a preliminary overview of the content of the chapter, and as an aid to revision.

Book excerpt: Selection for secondary education at 11-plus still arouses widespread controversy; and the psychological techniques which are employed, such as intelligence and attainments tests, are often criticised. Originally published in 1957, under the auspices of the British Psychological Society, a group of psychologists, experienced in this field, tried to present a balanced survey of the situation at the time. They show that the real problems of secondary schooling cannot be solved by simple administrative changes; they arise from historical causes, from the class structure of English society and the educational and vocational ambitions of parents. Psychology has studied the development and differentiation of children’s abilities and interests with age, and thus throws light on the need for, and the consequences of, streaming children in different classes or schools, and the value of alternative systems such as the comprehensive school. Selection at 11-plus, it is admitted, does have harmful effects on teaching in the junior school and produces much emotional strain, though these effects are often exaggerated. It was, in fact, accurate for some ninety per cent of children; yet the implications of its inevitable inaccuracy for some pupils cannot be ignored. The functions, and the value, of intelligence and attainments tests and the essay are examined, and full consideration given to the use of teachers’ estimates of suitability and other techniques. The Report is addressed primarily to teachers, educational administrator, and psychologists – that is people with some background knowledge of the problems involved; but it should also be intelligible and helpful to the educated layman, since the more technical details are confined to Appendices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ability to learn is of crucial importance in human life, but understanding this ability has proved to be difficult. There have been many attempts to formulate scientific theories based on both animal experiments and human experience; and these have been applied to education and the treatment of psychological disturbance, with a certain amount of success. Originally published in 1984, this incisive guide to the research and its outcomes provides the background to one of the most debated topics in psychology today. Learning Theory and Behaviour Modification introduces the work of major figures, such as Pavlov and Skinner, which has strongly influenced theories in educational and clinical psychology, and formed the basis of the techniques known as ‘behaviour modification’. As well as giving examples of these techniques the author relates new ideas about the scope and limits of behaviour modification to recent changes in the views of learning theorists. How much can experiments on animals tell us about human psychology?

Originally published in 1969, this book provides a survey of the most important ideas and experiments in educational psychology at the time, showing how they have helped to shape our understanding of the factors that influence child life and growth. Dr Evans discusses the subject under four broad headings: Child Development; Theories of Personality Formation; The Psychology of Learning; and Mental Testing and Measurement. The book provided a valuable introduction to educational psychology for education students at the time, and will now be of historical interest to those involved in educational psychology.

They are concerned with the question of concept formation and stress the importance of the teacher’s function in ensuring that the child really has assimilated the ideas and not merely the words for the concepts. The role of language is fundamental to this theme, and the interaction of language, thinking and learning is dealt with in the first section of the book. This section also provides a context within which subsequent discussions of classroom learning problems can be viewed. Some problems concerning the elaboration of a general theory of teaching are then examined with particular reference to possible methods of bridging the gap between research and implementation.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to promote discussion about educational objectives generally and objectives in the teaching of educational psychology in particular. To this end, Part 1 contains a review of the literature concerned with these two subjects, and also reports on investigations into the views of British students, teachers, college staffs and educational psychologists on the question of the objectives of educational psychology in teacher preparation. A comprehensive bibliography is provided. A further important section of Part 1 proposes a method of systematizing teaching objectives, and suggests a heuristic device for the generation of objectives at different levels of conceptual generality and complexity of learning. An example of this model in the field of educational psychology is presented, which illustrates the general approach to the generation of teaching objectives and proposes a specific approach to the production of teaching objectives in educational psychology. In Part 2 a selection of readings in the fields of objectives and educational psychology provides the reader with some of the key source material referred to in Part 1. As well as being a valuable and stimulating addition to the current debate on the specifying of educational objectives, the arguments in this book about the role of educational psychology in teacher preparation raise some fundamental questions for those concerned with teacher education.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1968, the findings of modern psychological research had contributed much that was directly relevant to the problems of all who taught at the time. Dr Fleming here presents both recent and past conclusions in a survey that would have been useful to all who were called upon to give instruction. Since its first appearance in 1958 this book had been entirely revised and brought into line with the most modern research. Today it can be read and enjoyed in its historical context.
