Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook for Travellers in Switzerland, and the Alps of Savoy and Piedmont The routes in the Handbook have been rearranged, as far as possible, to suit the convenience of travellers - all chan s and improvements in reads, railways, and steamers have been notice - and a vast number of new roads over little-known Alpine Passes have been described in the present and preceding editions. Plans of the principal towns are added. This edition is corrected as far as possible up to the time of publication, and contains notices of the railways which now bring Switzerland almost, as it were, to our own door. An Index has been prepared for the Swiss Handbook, independent of the Section relating to Savoy and Piedmont; and as each is furnished with a map, the two parts may be bound up separately for convenience, without injuring the completeness of either. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Hand-Book for Travellers in Switzerland and the Alps of Savoy and Piedmont, Including the Protestant Valleys of the Waldenses He has, however, no hesitation in speakingof the merits of the second section of this volume; relating to Savoy and Piedmont, which has been prepared by a friend and fellow-traveller, most intimately acquainted with those countries, which he has ex lored in. Almost every direction, and on many di erent occasions. The routes contained in it possess great interest, from the total want of any other information respecting the country the traverse, from the extreme accuracy with Wtl they are described, and from their being derived. Not from books, but from personal knowledge. They will probably be the means of throwing Open to English travellers a region little visited hitherto, b. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive book is an excellent planning resource for those who wish to venture into the Swiss Alps. Whether you are planning a walk, scramble, climb or ski tour this larger format guide describes each mountain area throughout Switzerland - the peaks, passes, valleys and bases - to help readers identify the best destinations for their chosen mountain activity. Dozens of individual valleys are described, together with the mountains that wall them, with recommendations given for their finest walks, treks and climbs. Working eastwards across the country, this guide is divided into seven chapters: Chablais Alps, Pennine Alp, Lepontine and Adula Alps, Bernina, Bregaglia and Albula Alps, Bernese Alps, Central Swiss Alps and the Silvretta and Ratikon Alps, each devoted to a specific range or group of connecting ranges. However, this is not a route guide and detailed descriptions are not provided. The aim of the book is to inspire as well as inform; to show first-time visitors just what the Swiss Alps have to offer and provide a new perspective for those who have been before.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ten Days in Switzerland A Strong desire (August 26, 1870) to push on and have as much time as possible among the mountains of Switzerland led us to take a through train from Freiburg, Germany, to Lucerne, stopping in Basle only long enough to make connections. Having an hour to wait, we drove from the station, over the Rhine, to the old part of the town, and had time for a glimpse at the Cathedral and the Museum. The Museum contains some very noted paintings: among them an original likeness of Erasmus, by Holbein; one of Luther, by Cranach; and also a picture of marvelous power - "Christ ready for the Tomb" - by Holbein. The view of the city from the bridge, looking either way, but especially toward the west, is very satisfactory, giving an effect more peculiar than that of any other city we had yet seen. After some delay, our train started for Lucerne. Coming to the scene of the detention, we found two "goods" trains had collided at Bretten, and rendered the track impassable. Locomotives and cars were pitched together in awful confusion. As it is human nature to take a little comfort at other people's misfortunes, we felt a glum satisfaction that America wasn't the only country of railroad accidents.
