Route choice depends on individual characteristics, route features, trip purpose and various other attributes involved in trip making. Route choice behavior is studied through a means of questionnaire circulated amongst the faculty, staff and students at The University of Toledo. Socio-demographic information, trip characteristics and commuters' attitude in selecting a particular route are studied through the responses from the survey. Statistical analysis is carried out to determine the effects of such attributes as the route choice behavior and the way they differ with the purpose of the trip. This study adopts the method of principle component analysis in order to group certain attributes measuring same underlying values. Mann-Whitney Test, correlation analysis, binary logistics regression and grouping techniques are used to analyze the commuter route choice behavior in detail. It is concluded from this study that individual characteristics, purpose of the trip and route attributes are the factors that affect the route choice of commuters.

Book excerpt: This research investigates the route choice behavior of cyclists in the City of Toronto using data collected from a smartphone application deployed to a large number of cyclists in the City. A total 4,556 cyclists registered for this study and logged over 30,000 commuting trips and 9,600 recreational trips over a study period of 9 months. The routes of individual cycling trips were estimated by a map-matching algorithm using second-by-second GPS readings of each trip and Toronto's cycling road network. Personal information such as age, gender and residence, work or school place was collected from the participants on a voluntary basis. The collected cycling trip data were used to estimate path-size logit route choice models - variant of multinomial logit model for both commuting and recreational trips with various modeling options and combinations of candidate factors. The estimations of the models were evaluated using various performance measures and statistical tests, resulting in findings and conclusions on the optimal modeling structure, the factors that had statistical significant effects on cyclists' routing decisions and the magnitude of these effects. The modeling results revealed the critical importance of cycling facilities such as bicycle lanes, multiuse pathways and trails on cyclists' route choice decisions. It was shown that directness as measured by travel distance is the most important factor considered by commuting cyclists in making their route choices. It was also found that cyclists prefer cycling along major streets than local streets and do not mind traveling along transit routes. Furthermore, they tend to choose routes with more bicycle facilities especially dedicated off-street facilities. Comparing to recreational trips, the routes chosen for commuting were in general closer to the routes of minimum distance and energy consumption. In contrast, for recreational trips, cyclists were less concerned about the directness or the degree of challenges of the routes. For these trips, cyclists appeared to place safety at a higher priority instead of time as they showed a higher preference to dedicated bike facilities such as bike lanes and off-street bike paths than on-street mixed facility. Weather and personal attributes were not found to be statistical significant in affecting cyclists' route choices. These along with other findings from this thesis research have provided valuable information for Toronto's ongoing effort on bicycle network planning. The results could also be used to enhance route-finding tools available to cyclists for improved cycling experience.

Book excerpt: One of the major impediments to developing a larger body of knowledge in travel behavior than we currently have is the lack of sufficient data at very detailed levels. The lack of sufficient data is the result of the inherent complexity of gathering and subsequently analyzing observations of the phenomena of interest. This is particularly true for route choice, a topic on which scant link-by-link data appear to be available, especially at multi-day level. In fact, very little empirical work is based on real world observation. This dissertation studies the factors that influence morning commuters route choice and route switching based on objective real-world observations of travel behavior during multi-day period. This dissertation tests the current route choice model assumption that travel time or travel distance is the only factor influencing drivers route choice decision. Investigation of the objective route choice factors confirms that minimizing travel time, although very important, is not the only factor that impacts route choice. Several other factors have been identified that impact commuters route choice. This dissertation examines the choice between using single or multiple morning commute routes. The results indicate the strong explanatory power of work schedule flexibility and trip-chaining on the choice of single or multiple commute routes compared to the commuters socio-demographic characteristics and commute route related attributes. This dissertation also presents an extensive effort in analyzing GPS-based travel behavior data and develops a methodology to subtract route choice information and trip-level travel information from the GPS-based vehicle activity data.

The five objectives of the study as specified in the Act were to: (1) Determine the current levels of bicycling and walking and identify reasons they are not better used as means of transportation; (2) Develop a plan for the increased use and enhanced safety of these modes and identify the resources necessary to implement and achieve this plan; (3) Determine the full costs and benefits of promoting bicycling and walking in urban and suburban areas; (4) Review and evaluate the success of promotion programs around the world to determine their applicability to the role required of the U.S. DOT to implement a successful program; and (5) Develop an action plan, including timetable and budget, for implementation of such Federal transportation policy. The purpose of this Interim Report is to document progress in addressing these five objectives. In dealing with each objective, this report summarizes available information, discusses what additional information is required, and outlines the approach to be used in collecting it.

It is a front-line area mainly in contemporary transportation, geography, and behavioral research. It focuses on individuals' decision-making processes regarding the choice of destinations, modes, departure times, and routes. Considerable research has been done on identifying and quantify ing the general rules governing the individuals' choice behavior, but to the best of our knowledge there is no single book that solely deals with route choice. The study of travelers' route choice in networks is primarily oriented towards gaining insight into their spatial choice behavior. How do people choose routes in a network, what do they know, what do they look for, which road characteristics playa role? On the basis of this information it is possible to design quantitative models aimed at predicting the use of routes dependent on the characteristics of the routes, those of the surrounding environment, and those of the travelers. In this way, traffic flows in the network can be calculated and the network performance can be evaluated.
