Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stability of a rotating drop held together by surface tension is investigated by an appropriate extension of the method of the tensor virial. Consideration is restricted to axisymmetric figures of equilibrium which enclose the origin. These figures form a one-parameter sequence. It is shown that with respect to stability, the axisymmetric sequence of rotating drops bears a remarkable similarity to the Maclaurin sequence of rotating liquid masses held together by their own gravitation. Thus, at a point along the sequence (where & = 0.4587) a neutral mode of oscillation occurs without instability setting in at that point (i.e. provided no dissipative mechanism is present); and the instability actually sets in at a subsequent point (where & = 0.8440) by overstable oscillations with a frequency F. The dependence on & of the six characteristic frequencies, belonging to the second harmonics, is determined and exhibited. (Author).

Book excerpt: The knowledge of behavior of liquids with free surfaces to their surrounding gaseous phase in compensated gravity is essential to the development of tank systems for spacecrafts. In microgravity, the liquid behavior is dominated by capillary forces, which are used to position and redistribute liquid propellant in a desired way for the mission. The body forces occurring due to residual accelerations, which can be caused by spin during the ballistic flight phases, force the liquid to reorient towards a new equilibrium state of the free surface. Due to spin the liquid is driven away from the tank outlet and located along tank walls in partially filled tanks. To assure enough liquid fuel over the tank outlet, so-called Propellant Management Devices (PMD’s), are employed. A PMD is a static, usually metal structure, which either provides a passage way for a liquid in microgravity or stores a certain amount of liquid at a desired location. Some PMD’s are designed to be refillable in periods of microgravity due to openings in the outer housing or by a housing composed of perforated metallic sheets. These reservoirs are refilled in periods of compensated gravity in order to provide the required amount of liquid fuel for attitude control or other maneuverings. Relatively large disturbances, such as lateral accelerations and spin, can drive the liquid fuel out of the reservoir, resulting in malfunction of the device. During spilling, gas enters the device such that only a residual amount of liquid propellant can be kept in the reservoir. Moreover, the connection to the bulk liquid in the tank may be interrupted such that refilling of the reservoir is disrupted. Hence, a PMD with two parallel disks forming the inlet and a venting tube at the topmost point of the outer housing shall be designed such that its refillable structure is only filled with liquid without any gas or vapor being easily trapped during operations.

Book excerpt: "[...] The Centrifugoscope.-I have here a toy, which we may suitably call the centrifugoscope, which shows in a simple way the formation of spheres of liquid in a medium of practically equal density. It consists of a large glass bulb attached to a stem, about three-quarters full of water, the remaining quarter being occupied by orthotoluidine. This liquid, being slightly denser than water at the temperature of the room, rests on the bottom of the bulb. When I hold the stem horizontally, and rotate it-suddenly at first, and steadily afterwards-a number of fragments are detached from the orthotoluidine, which immediately become spherical, and rotate near the outer side of the bulb. The main mass of the red liquid rises to the centre of the bulb, and rotates on its axis (Fig. 7), and we thus get an imitation of the solar system, with the planets of various sizes revolving round the central mass; and even the asteroids are represented by the numerous tiny spheres which are always torn off from the main body of liquid along with the larger ones. When the rotation ceases, the detached spheres sink, and after a short time join the parent mass of[...]".
