Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Against All Odds - The Story of Rosina Sedibane Modiba tells the heroic story of one of South Africa's most talented track-and-field athlete, Rosina Sedibane Modiba. Modiba is a woman from the township who dared to dream, despite the odds. And with the persecution of another female African athelete; Caster Semenya; this book is even more relevant.Modiba is a pioneer because as a black African woman athlete, she competed in multi-racial championships in 1976; at the height of apartheid and when it was illegal to compete against whites. Also this was during one of the most historic and volatile periods in South African history. She made history when she became the first black South African woman athlete to win a gold medal in 1500m during the multi-racial provincial championships at Pilditch Stadium in Pretoria in March 1977. Rosina astonished everyone when she beat the current record holder and favorite in the white federation, Sonja Laxton.Rosina was a dominant force in athletics in the country, dominating in both the black federation and in multiracial meets. This at a time when even the stadiums where Rosina competed in multi-racial races were in designated white areas. The pass laws were still in place and blacks needed permission to get to the stadiums. That prevented a majority of black people who wanted to see Rosina run from going.

Book Synopsis Jochen Peiper Justice Denied by : David G Williams
Download or read book Jochen Peiper Justice Denied written by David G Williams and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013-08-25 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jochen Peiper was a Colonel in the Waffen SS. One of the wars more divisive men who was accused and convicted of more than 900 murders yet he walked free after only a few years in prison, why? This book covers his whole life, from his humble beginnings in Berlin to his rise to full Colonel in the SS, and his participation in numerous campaigns in Europe and the Eastern Front. The story leads to the war crimes trial held in Dachau in 1946, the results of that trial, and the use of coercion and dubious interrogation methods leading up to it. Many guilty men walked free and many innocent men remained in jail. Others who were clearly guilty and named were never prosecuted at all. Rules were dismissed and what was supposed to be a shining example of justice became an embarrassing mess. If Peiper and his men were guilty of the crimes convicted of, why were the sentences never carried out? Thoroughly researched using original archived documents and other material this book sheds new light on an old story.
Download or read book Born in Chains written by Clinton Chauke and published by Jonathan Ball Publishers. This book was released on 2018-05-15 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is it like to be born dirt-poor in South Africa? Clinton Chauke knows, having been raised alongside his two sisters in a remote village bordering the Kruger National Park and a squatter camp outside Pretoria. Clinton is a young village boy when awareness dawns of how poor his family really is: there's no theft in the village because there's absolutely nothing to steal. But fire destroys the family hut, and they decide to move back to the city. There he is forced to confront the rough-and-tumble of urban life as a 'bumpkin'. He is Venda, whereas most of his classmates speak Zulu or Tswana and he has to face their ridicule while trying to pick up two or more languages as fast as possible. With great self-awareness, Clinton negotiates the pitfalls and lifelines of a young life: crime and drugs, football, religion, friendship, school, circumcision and, ultimately, becoming a man. Throughout it all, he displays determination as well as a self-deprecating humour that will keep you turning the pages till the end. Clinton's story is one that will give you hope that even in a sea of poverty there are those that refuse to give up and, ultimately, succeed.

Book Synopsis Say You're One of Them by : Uwem Akpan
Download or read book Say You're One of Them written by Uwem Akpan and published by Little, Brown. This book was released on 2008-06-09 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Oprah's Book Club selection: this "electrifying" book (Washington Post) pays tribute to the wisdom and resilience of children even in the face of the most agonizing circumstances. Uwem Akpan's stunning stories humanize the perils of poverty and violence so piercingly that few readers will feel they've ever encountered Africa so immediately. The eight-year-old narrator of "An Ex-Mas Feast" needs only enough money to buy books and pay fees in order to attend school. Even when his twelve-year-old sister takes to the streets to raise these meager funds, his dream can't be granted. Food comes first. His family lives in a street shanty in Nairobi, Kenya, but their way of both loving and taking advantage of each other strikes a universal chord. In the second of his stories published in a New Yorker special fiction issue, Akpan takes us far beyond what we thought we knew about the tribal conflict in Rwanda. The story is told by a young girl, who, with her little brother, witnesses the worst possible scenario between parents. They are asked to do the previously unimaginable in order to protect their children. This singular collection will also take the reader inside Nigeria, Benin, and Ethiopia, revealing in beautiful prose the harsh consequences for children of life in Africa. Akpan's voice is a literary miracle, rendering lives of almost unimaginable deprivation and terror into stories that are nothing short of transcendent. One of the best books of the year: Wall Street Journal, People, Bloomberg News, Christian Science Monitor, Washington Post Book World, and Entertainment Weekly
