Book excerpt: For the greater part of recorded history the most successful and powerful states were autocracies; yet now the world is increasingly dominated by democracies. In A Free Nation Deep in Debt, James Macdonald provides a novel answer for how and why this political transformation occurred. The pressures of war finance led ancient states to store up treasure; and treasure accumulation invariably favored autocratic states. But when the art of public borrowing was developed by the city-states of medieval Italy as a democratic alternative to the treasure chest, the balance of power tipped. From that point on, the pressures of war favored states with the greatest public creditworthiness; and the most creditworthy states were invariably those in which the people who provided the money also controlled the government. Democracy had found a secret weapon and the era of the citizen creditor was born. Macdonald unfolds this tale in a sweeping history that starts in biblical times, passes via medieval Italy to the wars and revolutions of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and ends with the great bond drives that financed the two world wars.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is debt sinful? Will riches draw us further away from God? Is money really “the root of all evil”? Being raised in the church, entrepreneur, and critically-acclaimed author, Ryan Mix, grew up thinking the answer to these questions was ‘yes’ – that the Bible and money simply do not mix. But after business success showed him how money worked and how it can be used to create jobs, fund charities, and improve lives, he began to wonder whether the Bible really warns us against it or whether it has just been misunderstood. Through in-depth research and interviews with Biblical experts, Ryan set out on a spiritual journey to discover what the Bible actually says about money. His ground-breaking findings and perceptive, real-world insight have transformed his life, and are sure to revolutionize yours, as well. You will discover: • Age-old Scriptures revealing how money works in today’s economy • Why poverty is not a virtue and there is nothing wrong with being rich • An ancient Bible story illustrating how to use debt to your advantage • An answer to why the rich are getting richer while the poor get poorer • Why we will never have to choose between “God or money” • A radical mindset shift that unlocks the key to cheerful giving With a bold and humorous style, Ryan investigates some of the Bible’s most cited, and often misunderstood, money-related verses, revealing their original meanings and connecting them to today’s economy. Referencing and analyzing over 100 different Biblical passages, this extraordinary study could change the way you view money and life.

Book excerpt: Exceedingly Abundantly was written specifically for Christians who desire to break free from the curse of debt. Having credit is not necessarily a bad thing; credit is often required to operate within this world's financial system. It is the misuse and abuse of credit that creates the bondage of debt in Christians' and non-Christians' lives. Exceedingly Abundantly is a testimony that uses biblical principles and practical examples to help guide Christians to their debt freedom. Many Christians are saddled with an exorbitant amount of debt-robbing God of the tithe and spending their way through situations that only God can fix. After coming to heavily rely on numerous credit cards with high balances, author Jacqueline Mingo was initially ashamed and extremely uncomfortable with her debt. But through her faith, Jacqueline realized that she didn't have to live under such bondage. Through her experience, you too can have the power of freedom from debt and financial independence!

Book excerpt: The twenty papers contained in this volume are a humble contribution to a cause which is exciting much interest in the present day-I mean the cause of scriptural holiness. It is a cause which everyone who loves Christ, and desires to advance His kingdom in the world, should endeavor to help forward. Everyone can do something and I wish to add my mite. The reader will find little that is directly controversial in these papers. I have carefully abstained from naming modern teachers and modern books. I have been content to give the result of my own study of the Bible, my own private meditations, my own prayers for light, and my own reading of old divines. If in anything I am still in error, I hope I shall be shown it before I leave the world. We all see in part, and have a treasure in earthen vessels. I trust I am willing to learn.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roots of the Republic shows how the Constitution was a product, not simply of the Constitutional Convention in 1787, but of a legal and philosophical tradition almost two centuries old. The editors have selected eighteen key documents in the development of that tradition and reproduced them with essays that explain what they mean, why they were written, and why they are important today. Each key document is accompanied by an interpretive essay written by a contemporary scholar. These essays focus on the importance of each frame of government and include commentaries on why they are meaningful today. Intended to help readers learn how to read and understand these documents, the book is also a handy reference and a strong introduction to the development of political thought and the debates surrounding the formation of the state governments and the federal union.

Book excerpt: The Philosophical Roots of the Ecological Crisis: Descartes and the Modern Worldview traces the conceptual sources of the present environmental degradation within the worldview of Modernity, and particularly within the thought of René Descartes, universally acclaimed as the father of modern philosophy. The book demonstrates how the triple foundations of the Modern worldview – in terms of an exaggerated anthropocentrism, a mechanistic conception of the natural world, and the metaphysical dualism between humanity and the rest of the physical world – can all be largely traced back to Cartesian thought, with direct ecological consequences.

Book excerpt: Since the financial crisis of 2008, the conversation about economic recovery has centered on the question of debt: whether we have too much of it, whose debt to forgive, and how to cut the deficit. But what if we’ve been asking the wrong questions all along? In Debtors’ Prison, leading economic thinker Robert Kuttner makes the most powerful argument to date that with austerity as a solution all we’re doing is jailing ourselves. Just as debtors’ prisons once prevented individuals from resuming a productive life, austerity measures shackle, rather than restore, economic growth. This is the simple truth belied by the sound bites of presidential elections and fiscal-cliff debates, and the perverse policies of the European Union. Blending current affairs with economics and history, from Robinson Crusoe author Daniel Defoe’s campaign for debt forgiveness in the seventeenth century to the two world wars and Bretton Woods, Kuttner uncovers the double standards in the politics of debt. Lucid, authoritative, provocative—a book that corrects the economic conversation and encourages a search for new solutions.
