Book Synopsis Crossing Empires by : Kristin L. Hoganson
Download or read book Crossing Empires written by Kristin L. Hoganson and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2020-01-03 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weaving U.S. history into the larger fabric of world history, the contributors to Crossing Empires de-exceptionalize the American empire, placing it in a global transimperial context. They draw attention to the breadth of U.S. entanglements with other empires to illuminate the scope and nature of American global power as it reached from the Bering Sea to Australia and East Africa to the Caribbean. With case studies ranging from the 1830s to the late twentieth century, the contributors address topics including diplomacy, governance, anticolonialism, labor, immigration, medicine, religion, and race. Their transimperial approach—whether exemplified in examinations of U.S. steel corporations partnering with British imperialists to build the Ugandan railway or the U.S. reliance on other empires in its governance of the Philippines—transcends histories of interimperial rivalries and conflicts. In so doing, the contributors illuminate the power dynamics of seemingly transnational histories and the imperial origins of contemporary globality. Contributors. Ikuko Asaka, Oliver Charbonneau, Genevieve Clutario, Anne L. Foster, Julian Go, Michel Gobat, Julie Greene, Kristin L. Hoganson, Margaret D. Jacobs, Moon-Ho Jung, Marc-William Palen, Nicole M. Phelps, Jay Sexton, John Soluri, Stephen Tuffnell

Book Synopsis Transcendence at the Table by : Julia Hurlow
Download or read book Transcendence at the Table written by Julia Hurlow and published by . This book was released on 2020-10-29 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When is the last time you sat down for a meal, to break bread with other people, and experienced peace? Throughout the arc of the scriptural narrative the word "shalom" is used as a way to speak of the way of peace. This word shalom embodies the depiction of creation where all things would glorify to the Triune God as well as bear the image of the Triune God who seamlessly embraces love and belonging. What if the universal space at a table is where shalom is experienced relationally? What if the longing people have for love and belonging can be extended through hospitality at a table? Unification can happen when invitations are extended to come, participate, and communicate at the table as a reflection of the Imago Dei.

Book Synopsis Television Introductions by : Vincent Terrace
Download or read book Television Introductions written by Vincent Terrace and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2013-11-07 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the beginning of network television, many shows have been preceded by an announcement or theme song that served various purposes. In the 1950s and ’60s, it was common for announcers to declare that a program had been “brought to you by” a sponsor who paid for the privilege of introducing a show. Other programs, such as The Twilight Zone, Star Trek, and The Odd Couple, provided a brief encapsulation of the show’s subject matter, a practice that has continued for recent shows like Alias, Battlestar Galactica, Person of Interest, and the various editions of Law & Order. In Television Introductions: Narrated TV Program Openings since 1949, Vincent Terrace has assembled openings for more than nine hundred television shows from the past seven decades. The only documented history of narrated television program introductions, this volume is arranged by type of programming, such as comedy, drama, Western, game show, soap opera, and children’s show. In addition to quoting the opening material, entries provide information about each show’s network history and years of broadcast. Many entries include descriptions of the show, the names of announcers, and a list of main cast members, as well as a sponsor pitch exactly as spoken. Openings for programs with multiple introductions like The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet and Charlie’s Angels are also included. For programs that featured new guest stars every episode—such as game shows and variety programs—Terrace has selected a representative introduction. In addition to the theme song credits found in the main text, there are also appendixes of theme songs and their composers and/or singers, as well as a listing of commercial releases (on DVD, VHS, CD, and LP) of shows and their soundtracks. A comprehensive resource for researchers and pop culture aficionados alike, Television Introductions provides a fascinating look at this neglected part of TV history.
