Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rome's Attack on Our Public Schools We would much rather our children should grow up in ignorance than be taught in a school that is not Catholic. Freeman's Romish Journal says: Let the pub lic school system go to where it came from - the devil. We want Christian schools, and the State cannot tell us what Christianity is. The Cincinnati Catholic Telegraph says It will be a glorious day for the Catholics of this country, when, under the blows of justice and morality, our school system will be shivered to pieces. Cardinal Manning says: The common school system of the United States is the worst in the world. Father Walker declares, Unless you suppress the public school system, as at present conducted, it will prove the damnation of this country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Public Schools and the War The following pages represent an endeavor to study the effects of the war upon schools in other countries and especi ally in the United States. The first four chapters deal with some specific problems of the public schools in connection with the war and were written when the great world con ict was still going on. They show the revolutionary changes which the public schools have made in adjusting themselves to the needs of the war, and suggest the unmistakable tendencies of our educational reconstruction which is yet to come. The last two chapters were written whentthe great war had just come to an end. In them the author has tried to show, in the light of the experience of many school systems in this country, how American public education can be reorganized in order to meet the needs of the coming new world order. It is the author's hope that they may be of some value to the general discussion of educational reform. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The problem presented was whether that influence should be one that would tend to interrupt the regular course of instruction, or to benefit it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History for Graded and District Schools "Truth is one! And in all lands beneath the sun, Whoso has eyes to see may see The tokens of its unity." The purpose of this book is to present a framework of history for the graded and district schools; that is, for children from six to about fifteen years of age. The effort has been made to present the material in such connection throughout the grades that it would gradually develop in pupils' minds the idea of the unity of history, and thus finally lead them to feel that history is an unbroken stream of life, of which the present in general, and their lives in particular, constitute an important part. It is not thought that the material presented here for each grade will be entirely sufficient for teachers who have exceptional advantages for carrying on primary history work. It is intended as a general framework, furnishing, perhaps, the greater part of the material which the teacher having all the grades will be able to teach, but which the teacher having but one or two grades and good library advantages should use to build and to enlarge upon, according to particular circumstances. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Education of Defectives in the Public Schools The work for defectives in the public school is so new and experimental that the readers of this discussion are asked to regard all the opinions here set forth as merely tentative, to be verified or discarded as later development prove them right or wrong. The success of the schools for defectives in Newark has given the author courage to send this volume out to those who are interested in the why and how of their success. It is needless to say that the schools could not have been made a success without the splendid ability and wonderful cooperation of the staff of teachers, and this opportunity is taken to thank them again for their intelligent and hearty support of the author in all branches of work which have been attempted. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on new primary source evidence, this volume evaluates ancient Rome's influence on an English intellectual tradition from the 1850s to the 1920s as politicians, scientists, economists and social reformers addressed three fundamental debates of the period – Empire, Nation and City. These debates emerged as a result of political, economic and social change both in the Empire and Britain, and coalesced around issues of degeneracy, morality and community. As ideas of political freedom were subsumed by ideas of civilization, best preserved by technocratic governance, the political and historical focus on Republican Rome was gradually displaced by interest in the Imperial period of the Roman emperors. Moreover, as the spectre of the British Empire and Nation in decline increased towards the turn of the nineteenth century, the reception of Imperial Rome itself was transformed. By the 1920s, following the end of World War I, Imperial Rome was conjured into a new framework echoing that of the British Empire and appealing to the surging nationalistic mood.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Public-School System of the United States The material contained in this volume will consist of the most important of the data that I collected during a journey extending over a period of more than five months, made under the auspices of "The Forum," for the purpose of studying the public-school system of the United States. The facts presented in the first part of the present work do not vary materially from those presented in a series of articles recently published in that magazine. The matter contained in the second part, however, - the part devoted exclusively to the compositions written by the children and the drawings made by them, - appears here for the first time. In undertaking this journey it was my aim not only to learn what methods of instruction were commonly followed in our country, and the general condition of our schools, but also to investigate the manner in which the schools of different cities were managed. Book excerpt: Isocrates is one of the most remarkable and influential figures in the history of human thought. The influence of his ideas in the history of historical writing, rhetoric, the visual arts, music, religion and theology, political science, philosophy and, above all, educational philosophy and practice in Europe, Australia, North America, North Africa, and the Middle East are well established and widely known. This book argues careful study of the educational philosophy of Isocrates and its legacy can contribute to an improved understanding of the historiography of educational thought, his distinctive normative methodology in both political and educational philosophy, and his arguments about the primary importance of the virtues of self-knowledge and realistic self-appraisal for educational philosophers and practitioners. At a time when educational philosophy has an increasingly precarious academic existence and educationists are actively seeking new historiographical and methodological approaches to the philosophical study of education, there is much to be gained by recovering and reevaluating the historiography and normative methodology of Isocrates and the role they play in educational discourse and practice today.
