Book excerpt: Excerpt from Romanism Versus the Public School System There are points of radical divergence, indicating that two peoples are struggling in the womb of the nation. Vituperation and abuse cannot settle these points, but may postpone the settlement. In some localities the contest is hot. The author has decided views, and he does not intend to put either shavings or kerosene upon the fire, but rather the solid fuel of facts and principles. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rome's Attack on Our Public Schools We would much rather our children should grow up in ignorance than be taught in a school that is not Catholic. Freeman's Romish Journal says: Let the pub lic school system go to where it came from - the devil. We want Christian schools, and the State cannot tell us what Christianity is. The Cincinnati Catholic Telegraph says It will be a glorious day for the Catholics of this country, when, under the blows of justice and morality, our school system will be shivered to pieces. Cardinal Manning says: The common school system of the United States is the worst in the world. Father Walker declares, Unless you suppress the public school system, as at present conducted, it will prove the damnation of this country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Rome: For High Schools and Academics The treatment of the early constitution rests directly pon the sources, which uniformly represent the plebeians s citizens and the patricians as their leaders. I have voided mentioning the concilium tributum plebis, as I ee no reason for believing that it ever had more than a heoretical existence. The view of the constitution which his volume presents, and to which scholars are now return ng, is as simple and natural as it is well founded. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religious Education and the Public School: An American Problem At the meeting of the Inter-Church Conference in Carnegie Hall, New York, in November, 1905, at which twenty-nine Protestant Churches of America were represented, one of the papers treated the question of Weekday Religious Instruction. Its main proposition was favorably received, and the following resolution was adopted by the Conference: Resolved, That in the need of more systematic education in religion, we recommend for the favorable consideration of the Public School authorities of the country the proposal to allow the children to absent themselves without detriment from the public schools on Wednesday or on some other afternoon of the school week for the purpose of attending religious instruction in their own churches; and we urge upon the churches the advisability of availing themselves of the opportunity so granted to give such instruction in addition to that given on Sunday. The further consideration of the subject was referred to the Executive Committee. By direction of this Committee a report on Week-day Instruction in Religion was presented at the First Meeting of the Federal Council of the Churches of Christ in America, held in Philadelphia in 1908. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this wide-ranging and richly detailed book Alan Richardson addresses many issues in literary and educational history never before examined together. The result is an unprecedented study of how transformations in schooling and literacy in Britain between 1780 and 1832 helped shape the provision of literature as we know it. In chapters focused on such topics as definitions of childhood, educational methods and institutions, children's literature, female education, and publishing ventures aimed at working-class adults, Richardson demonstrates how literary genres, from fairy tales to epic poems, were enlisted in an ambitious program for transforming social relations through reading and education. Themes include literary developments such as the domestic novel, a sanitized and age-stratified literature for children, the invention of 'popular' literature, and the constitution of 'Literature' itself in the modern sense. Romantic texts - by Wordsworth, Shelley, Blake, and Yearsley among others - are reinterpreted in the light of the complex historical and social issues which inform them, and which they in turn critically address.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Catholic School System in the United States: Its Principles, Origin, and Establishment IT has been the aim of the author in the present volume to exhibit a coherent view of the Catholic school movement in the United States from the earliest times down to the great immigration period, which began about the year 1840. The character istic feature of the movement during all this time was the steady efiort to build and equip schools, provide teachers, and overcome fundamental difli culties both from within and from without. It was the period of the establishment of the schools. There was comparatively little in the way of aca demic progress. This came later on, when the in flux of religious Orders from Europe and their rapid growth provided a greater supply of teachers, and thus made it possible to give to the teacher a better training. It is the intention to present a study of this second period, that of the development of the schools, in another volume. The educational work of Bishop Hughes obviously belongs to the first of these two periods rather than to the second, and for this reason, notwithstanding some disturb ance of the chronological order, it is dealt with in the present volume. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Goldsmith's Roman History: For the Use of Schools To these objections there are some who may add, that I have rejected many of the modern improvements in Roman history, and that every character is left in. Full possession of that fame or infamy which it obtained from its contemporaries, or those who wrote immedi ately after. I acknowledge the charge, for it appears now too late to rejudge the virtues or the vices of those men who were but very incompletely known even to their own historians. The Romans, perhaps, upon ma ny occasions, formed wrong ideas of virtue but they were by no means so ignorant or abandoned in general as not to give their brightest characters the greatest share of their applause and I do not know whether it be fair to try Pagan actions by the stantmrd of Christian morality.
