Marked by not only geographical proximity but also by the shared experience of communism and its collapse, the countries of Eastern Europe--Poland, Hungary, Albania, Romania, Bulgaria, and the former states of Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, and East Germany--share literatures that reveal many common themes when examined together. Compiled by a leading scholar, the guide includes an overview of literary trends in historical context; a listing of some 700 authors by country; and an A-to-Z section of articles on the most influential writers.
Book Synopsis Spaces of Polyphony by : Clara-Ubaldina Lorda
Download or read book Spaces of Polyphony written by Clara-Ubaldina Lorda and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2012-08-29 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spaces of Polyphony covers a lot of ground. It echoes the voices of researchers and their informants from many different places and backgrounds. Among the variety of languages under study and methodological approaches there is also a common ground and narrative thread underpinning the polyphonic chorus of the contributors. From a shared starting point of discourse analysis and inspiration from Bakhtin, the various authors span from East to West, from Moscow to Texas, from Romania and Czech Republic to Mexico. They look into all ages, starting from early childhood, and many walks of life, ranging from casual chatting among relatives to parliamentary speeches and TV shows, including formal education, literary inner monologue and translation. Irony, humour and self-awareness are recurrent themes. The array of voices and dialogism studied in this book is such that it even includes the silent (silenced) voices of people forced to express their heritage by weaving their discourse.

Download or read book Challenging Change written by Biljana Mišić Ilić and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2012-04-25 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, Challenging Change: Literary and Linguistic Responses, is a collection of twenty-three articles which examine change – understood in the broadest sense – as the need of the modern man to redefine, revise, deconstruct and reconstruct previous theories, histories, moralities, social relationships, forms of language and language use. In these times of great change, when the only constant seems to be change itself, the authors of these essays respond to the challenge and approach the notion of change from the perspectives of literary studies and linguistics. The book opens with an introductory overview, followed by twenty-three articles divided into two sections. The authors of the articles come from Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Romania, the United States, Canada, Japan, and Norway.

Book Synopsis Censorship in Romania by : Lidia Vianu
Download or read book Censorship in Romania written by Lidia Vianu and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through a series of interviews with prominent Romanian literary figures and a select presentation of their writings, Lidia Vianu asks how, under communism, did Romanian writers cope with constant ideological shifts and, in turn, respond to the censorship that so often accompanied such changes? Now that Romania has emerged from almost fifty years of Communist rule, what is the current status of censorship? These writers are important because, though working under the terror of communism, they dared to put their thoughts into writing, remaining true to their craft, and, in some instances, even arranging for publication. Vianu has chosen a series of subversive writings that not only indicted communism but were also widely embraced by the Romanian public. The author continues to argue that after the fall of communism and the disappearance of subversive literature, the Romanian public started to devour works of translation. A somewhat different form of censorship arose: state-sponsored censorship was replaced by what Vianu terms a crisis of native writing.

Book Synopsis The Best of the Prose Poem by : Peter Johnson
Download or read book The Best of the Prose Poem written by Peter Johnson and published by White Pine Press (NY). This book was released on 2000 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its inception in 1992, 'The Prose Poem' has published work which even the writers themselves cannot define without restoring the metaphor. Russell Edson likens prose poems to 'cast iron aeroplanes that can actually fly', while Charles Simic states that writing them is like trying to catch a fly in a dark room. The fly probably isn't even there...You keep tripping over and bumping into things in hot pursuit. Nonetheless, Johnson knows a prose poem when he reads one. Better still, he recognises a good one and has included many of them here.
