Whether I am right in reprinting and revising papers, many of which were written long ago, the critics will decide. I can only say that they are fragments of work into which I have put my best abilities, and in the writing Of which I have found much pleasure, whether in the hurry of a busy tutorial life at Oxford, or in the leisure of old age in the country. I have to acknowledge gratefully the permission of the Council Of the Society for the Promotion of Roman Studies, and of the Council of the Classical Association. Mankind in their various groups had a preordained course to run. What that course was in any case to be, they did not know: their duty was to face it, and to be satisfied that the result was for the best. Patriotic ingenuity noted the virtues to which successful peoples might point as explanations of their own success, and failing peoples deplored in retrospect the vices to which they imputed their own failure. The story of Rome illustrates both these phenomena. But in the case of Rome (and not of Rome only) they appear in a very simple form. Prosperity suggests confidence, consciousness of decline insinuates despair. There is no sincere belief in possible revival through the people's united effort, for the people as a people, a living selfconscious unit, does not exist. In the vast Roman subject world patience means drifting under the fitful guidance of remote rulers. And this helplessness is in effect a practical fatalism, whether it turns its gaze to divine powers or yields to an impersonal Fate. It has no belief in the power of man to control his own destiny: once started on the downward path, he has only to go on till he reaches..

Originally published between 1956 and 1974, they constitute an impressive attempt to free Roman satire from misinterpretations that arose during the romantic era and that continue to plague scholars in the field. The author rejects the proposition that Juvenal and other satirists expressed spontaneous, unadorned anger and that the critic’s best approach is the study of the historical, social, economic and personal circumstances that led to their statement of that anger. This work develops his thesis that Roman satire was designed as a literary form and that the proper stance of the critic is to elucidate its art. Focusing on the dramatic character of the first-person speaker in the satires of Horace, Persius, and Juvenal, the author shows both how the speaker’s role was shaped to suit the purposes of the individual poems and how that role changed over successive collections of satires. Book excerpt: The crisis Rome experienced in the last decades of the Republic was intellectual as well as political, social and military. This crisis was marked by conflicts over values and a growing dichotomy between words and things, as a result of which the key words of the Roman tradition lost their anchor in the inherited, commonly-held percepetion of reality known as the mos maiorum. The crisis was therefore also one of the Latin language itself. The monograph explores this thesis in discussions of the background and character of Roman intellectual history, the nature of the mos maiorum, the relationship of the Late Republic to the Mediterranean world, the roles of Julius Caesar, Catullus, Cicero, and Lucretius in the crisis, and its Augustan and later consequences. The major portion of the discussion is devoted to Lucretius, because the De Rerum Natura is the clearest example of the extent and nature of the crisis, from which it took its origin and gained its form and purpose. A principal goal of the essay is to relate Lucretius to the structure of Roman literary and intellectual history. It finds the explanation for his work in the nature of that history and the characteristic Roman modes and categories of thought rather than in the general history fo Greek philosophy. It also offers a new explanation of the relationshiop of the authors of the Late Republic to each other. In so doing, it indicates the foundation for a new history of Roman literature and a new conception of the reality and importance of the intellectual history of Rome.
