Book excerpt: The finding, in 1727, of the gilded bronze head of the Roman goddess Minerva during the construction of the famous Stall Street led to the discovery of the Roman temple and of the baths. Since then archaeologists have discovered more and more about the Roman city of Aquae Sulis. In this new edition of a work first published almost thirty years ago, Professor Cunliffe brings the story right up to date. He deals in detail with the temple and its precinct and with the 'curse tablets' which have been deciphered to reveal the thoughts of Roman visitors. He then explains just how the bathing establishment was organized and explores the relationship between the spa and the town. We learn what life was like for the local inhabitants as well as for the visitors. Finally, he charts the process of decline and decay during the 300 years after the Roman period.

Book excerpt: For almost three hundred years, excavations have been carried out in Roman Bath. At first these were rare and sporadic and archaeological finds were made by chance. Even fewer were reported. But from the 1860s, deliberate investigations were made and increasingly professional methods employed. The Roman Baths were laid open to view, but little was published. From the 1950s, interest accelerated, professionals and amateurs collaborated, and there was never a decade in which some new discovery was not made. The first popular but authoritative presentation of this work was made in 1971 and updated several times. However, from the 1990s to the present there has been some sort of archaeological investigation almost every year. This has thrown much new and unexpected light on the town of Aquae Sulis and its citizens. In this book, Peter Davenport, having been involved in most of the archaeological work in Bath since 1980, attempts to tell the story of Roman Bath: the latest interim report on the 'Three Hundred Year Dig'.

The building techniques employed and how Roman bathing habits fitted into the sporting life of Asia Minor under the Empire are also explored.

Sandra Bullock stars in 'The Proposal' (2009) as Margaret Tate, a tyrannical business executive on the brink of deportation from the United States back to her homeland of Canada. Margaret coerces her young assistant Andrew (Ryan Reynolds) into marrying her so that she can stay in the country and he can stay in his job. In order to keep up the facade, Margaret must now endure a trip to Alaska to meet her future in-laws (Mary Steenburgen and Craig T. Nelson). In 'Runaway Bride' (1999), Ike Graham (Richard Gere) is a successful, flippant and misogynstic New York journalist, who writes an accusing piece on the antics of Maggie Carpenter (Julia Roberts), a Maryland woman who has left three men at the altar. When Maggie protests about the inaccuracies in the article, Ike is fired. Ike decides to pursue the story further, and journeys to Maryland, where he meets Maggie and discovers she is due to be married for a fourth time. As Ike gets to know Maggie, he begins to fall for her charms, and realises why so many men before have been led down the aisle. In 'Pretty Woman', lonely businessman Edward Lewis (Richard Gere) hires LA prostitute Vivian Ward (Julia Roberts) to give him directions when he gets lost, and later to be his escort while he goes wheeling and dealing for a week. He buys her clothes, she softens his heart and the unlikely couple fall head over heels in love.

Book excerpt: Rome grew from a small settlement on the banks of the Tiber to become a great city, and eventually the capital of the greatest empire of the ancient world. The legacy of Rome is its Latin language, its laws, its architecture and the urge to create empire, from the Holy Roman Empire itself to the European Union. Ancient Rome recreates the lives and beliefs of the ancient Romans in a lively and historically specific manner through linking text with photographs and illustrations to describe daily life over a period of 600 years (200 BCE-400 CE). By connecting an illustration of the past to current photographs, Ancient Rome provides a clear picture of how ancient life is reconstructed. Archaeology and How Do We Know? boxes, providing evidence for the information presented, show how knowledge of the past is authenticated. A detailed timeline, a glossary, a further information section and an index round out this clearly presented and engaging book. Rich with evidence and colorful descriptions, Ancient Rome is a valuable guide to discovering the roots of western civilization. Ancient Rome is part of the Picturing the Past Series from Enchantend Lion Books: How do we know what we know about ancient peoples and their cultures that have disappeared? Ultimately, there are three main sources of information: the images that survive in wall paintings, ceramics and sculptures; artifacts, such a jewelry, utensils, toys, clothing, and tools; and the writings of ancient authors that have survived the ravages of time. From such sources, it is possibleto begin to reconstruct the life of the distant past with an astonishing degree of accuracy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water played an important part of ancient Roman life, from providing necessary drinking water, supplying bath complexes, to flowing in large-scale public fountains. The Roman culture of water was seen throughout the Roman Empire, although it was certainly not monolithic and it could come in a variety of scales and forms, based on climatic and social conditions of different areas. This article seeks to define ‘water culture’ in Roman society by examining literary, epigraphic, and archaeological evidence, while understanding modern trends in scholarship related to the study of Roman water. The culture of water can be demonstrated through expressions of power, aesthetics, and spectacle. Further there was a shared experience of water in the empire that could be expressed through religion, landscape, and water’s role in cultures of consumption and pleasure.
