Book Synopsis ENT Emergencies by : John L. Dornhoffer
Download or read book ENT Emergencies written by John L. Dornhoffer and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The head and neck, as an anatomical cross roads of multiple functions critical to human well being, including respiration, digestion, sensation, communication, and aesthetics, presents disorders that acutely threaten these vital systems. As with any emergency situation, information devoted to the priorities of management: airway, breathing, circulation, and disability are presented for otolaryngic emergencies that may manifest at each of these levels in the form of acute airway obstruction, epistaxis, and the gamut of traumatic, infectious, and inflammatory disorders that affect special sensation, neurologic function, and cosmesis. Discussed in this issue is the use of modalities such as endoscopy, optics, and radiologic imaging as a means to earlier diagnosis, detailed anatomic assessment, and minimally invasive surgery used in the emergency setting. This text strives to keep practitioners at the forefront in the management of ENT emergencies. Experts in otolaryngology describe those conditions that require urgent evaluation and treatment but are also relatively common. Where evidence-based medicine is lacking, comprehensive reviews of the controversies are presented along with logical treatment algorithms based on clinical expertise. This issue of Otolaryngologic Clinics should be highly relevant to the otolaryngologist as well as the general practitioner and emergency physician.

Book excerpt: In the text's first edition, Marjorie Tew showed through her painstaking statistical analysis of perinatal mortality rates for hospital and home, that for some women hospital birth might actually be more dangerous than home birth. These findings and further compelling evidence gathered by the House of Commons Health Committee in 1992 should have revolutionized the direction of maternity care. This third edition considers the evidence on which the recommended changes in policy were made and the implications of implementing them.

Book Synopsis Sexing the Citizen by : Judith Surkis
Download or read book Sexing the Citizen written by Judith Surkis and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-07-05 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did marriage come to be seen as the foundation and guarantee of social stability in Third Republic France? In Sexing the Citizen, Judith Surkis shows how masculine sexuality became central to the making of a republican social order. Marriage, Surkis argues, affirmed the citizen's masculinity, while also containing and controlling his desires. This ideal offered a specific response to the problems—individualism, democratization, and rapid technological and social change—associated with France's modernity. This rich, wide-ranging cultural and intellectual history provides important new insights into how concerns about sexuality shaped the Third Republic's pedagogical projects. Educators, political reformers, novelists, academics, and medical professionals enshrined marriage as the key to eliminating the risks of social and sexual deviance posed by men-especially adolescents, bachelors, bureaucrats, soldiers, and colonial subjects. Debates on education reform and venereal disease reveal how seriously the social policies of the Third Republic took the need to control the unstable aspects of male sexuality. Surkis's compelling analyses of republican moral philosophy and Emile Durkheim's sociology illustrate the cultural weight of these concerns and provide an original account of modern French thinking about society. More broadly, Sexing the Citizen illuminates how sexual norms continue to shape the meaning of citizenship.

Book Synopsis Reign of Virtue by : Miranda Pollard
Download or read book Reign of Virtue written by Miranda Pollard and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2012-07-15 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Reign of Virtue, Miranda Pollard explores the effects of military defeat and Nazi occupation on French articulations of gender in wartime France. Drawing on governmental archives, historical texts, and propaganda, Pollard explores what most historians have ignored: the many ways in which Vichy's politicians used gendered images of work, family, and sexuality to restore and maintain political and social order. She argues that Vichy wanted to return France to an illustrious and largely mythical past of harmony, where citizens all knew their places and fulfilled their responsibilities, where order prevailed. The National Revolution, according to Pollard, replaced the ideals of liberty, equality, and fraternity with work, family, and fatherland, making the acceptance of traditional masculine and feminine roles a key priority. Pollard shows how Vichy's policies promoted the family as the most important social unit of a new France and elevated married mothers to a new social status even as their educational, employment, and reproductive rights were strictly curtailed.
Book Synopsis The Changing Face of Health Care by : John Frederic Kilner
Download or read book The Changing Face of Health Care written by John Frederic Kilner and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 1998 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In response to the many changes currently going on in health care, this book offers the combined insight and wisdom of a stellar group of scholars and professionals with extensive experience in the health care field. The book opens with a look at people's actual experience of health care today, from four different perspectives. It then addresses foundational questions, including the nature of medicine, nursing, and justice. Surveyed next are the changing economics of health care as well as the impact of these changes on such areas as mental health care, long-term care, health care for minorities, and legal malpractice. The closing section of the book assesses from a Christian perspective available constructive alternatives, including creative funding strategies with special attention to the needs of poor persons, physician unions, and the use of "alternative medicine" therapies.
Book Synopsis Midwifery and the Medicalization of Childbirth by : Edwin R. Van Teijlingen
Download or read book Midwifery and the Medicalization of Childbirth written by Edwin R. Van Teijlingen and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2004 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an introduction to the sociological study of midwifery. The readings have been selected to highlight the interplay between midwifery and medicine, reflecting the medicalization of childbirth. It highlights the major themes in both a historical and a current context, as well as western and non-western societies. Two major themes underlie the organization of this book: that the conception of midwifery must be broadened to encompass a sociological perspective; and that the ongoing trend toward the medicalization of midwifery is crucial to an understanding of the historical, current, and future status of midwifery. By medicalization of childbirth and midwifery the author mean the increasing tendency for women to prefer a hospital delivery to a home delivery, the increasing trend toward the use of technology and clinical intervention in childbirth, and the determination of medical practitioners to confine the role played by midwives in pregnancy and childbirth, if any, to a purely subordinate one.

Book excerpt: Across history, the ideas and practices of male identity have varied much between time and place: masculinity proves to be a slippery concept, not available to all men, sometimes even applied to women.

Book Synopsis Initiation à la discipline infirmière by : Marie-Thérèse Celis-Geradin

This book was released on 2024-08-27 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
