Book excerpt: Pure aluminium has a high thermal conductivity, but as alloying elements are added the thermal conductivity decreases. How much it occurs depends on the alloying elements and whether they are present in solid solution, as small precipitates or larger particles. The present work studies the influence of Cu and Mg additions on the thermal conductivity of Sr-modified as-cast and T6-heat treated Al-Si alloys for a wide range of temperatures (30-400 oC). An unmodified Al-Si alloy with no additions was analysed as well so as to investigate the influence of the modification with Sr. Three properties were determined to calculate the thermal conductivity: thermal diffusivity, specific heat and density. Thermal diffusivity measurements were carried out by means of a Laser Flash device. Regarding the Sr-modified Al-Si alloys, the highest thermal conductivity corresponds to the alloy without the addition of other elements in both as-cast and T6 condition. The alloys containing Cu have in general a lower thermal conductivity than the alloys with solely Mg. The presence of Mg has an overall beneficial effect in as-cast conditions for an alloy containing Cu. In contrast, this addition becomes detrimental for a copper-bearing heat-treated alloy in most of the temperature range. With regard to the Sr-modification outcome, it was found that enhances thermal conductivity in as-cast alloys. Nevertheless, its influence after the heat treatment requires a further study. The thermal conductivity increases normally with the temperature and when the T6 heat treatment is applied. This increment is attributable to the purer aluminium matrix obtained as the precipitates form, grow and coarsen.

Their density, being the lowest of all structural metals, makes them the primary choice in global attempts aimed at reducing the weight of transportation vehicles. However, magnesium also creates challenges at certain stages of raw alloy melting, fabrication of net-shape components and their service. The first one is caused by very high affinity of magnesium to oxygen, which requires protective atmospheres increasing manufacturing cost and heavily contributing to greenhouse gas emissions. The second challenge relates to very high corrosivity of liquid magnesium towards materials it contacts. This imposes restrictions on the selection of materials used to contain, transfer or process molten magnesium during manufacturing operations. A mixture of unique benefits and serious challenges of magnesium alloys in solid and liquid states described here makes the book very useful for a broad audience of scientists and engineers from academia and industry.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was the development of a thermomechanical procedure to process Aluminum-Magnesium alloys and testing effects of alloying additions on these alloys. Magnesium contents of eight and ten weight percent and the alloying effects of copper and manganese were studied. Microstructures and mechanical properties at six warm rolling temperatures located above and below the solvus line of these alloys were examined. Ultimate tensile strengths in excess of 680 MPa (99 KSI) were obtained. Microstructural evidence indicated that the precipitation of the 'beta' intermetallic phase was one of the most important mechanisms in controlling the strength of the alloy. Furthermore, precipitation is so rapid at higher temperatures that it becomes the strongest force within the microstructure and its presence prevents any possible recrystallization of the alloy. However, when the temperature exceeds the solvus temperature for the alloy, recrystallization does occur with large losses in both yield and ultimate tensile strength. (Author).

Book excerpt: Continually rising energy prices have inspired increased interest in weight reduction in the automotive and aerospace industries, opening the door for the widespread use and development of lightweight structural materials. Chief among these materials are cast Al-Si and magnesium-based alloys. Utilization of Al-Si alloys depends on obtaining a modified fibrous microstructure in lieu of the intrinsic flake structure, a process which is incompletely understood. The local solidification conditions, mechanisms, and tensile properties associated with the flake to fiber growth mode transition in Al-Si eutectic alloys are investigated here using bridgman type gradient-zone directional solidification. Resulting microstructures are examined through quantitative image analysis of two-dimensional sections and observation of deep-etched sections showing three-dimensional microstructural features. The transition was found to occur in two stages: an initial stage dominated by in-plane plate breakup and rod formation within the plane of the plate, and a second stage where the onset of out-of-plane silicon rod growth leads to the formation of an irregular fibrous structure. Several microstructural parameters were investigated in an attempt to quantify this transition, and it was found that the particle aspect ratio is effective in objectively identifying the onset and completion velocity of the flake to fiber transition. The appearance of intricate out-of-plane silicon instability formations was investigated by adapting a perturbed-interface stability analysis to the Al-Si system. Measurements of silicon equilibrium shape particles provided an estimate of the anisotropy of the solid Si/liquid Al-Si system and incorporation of this silicon anisotropy into the model was found to improve prediction of the instability length scale. Magnesium alloys share many of the benefits of Al-Si alloys, with the added benefit of a 1/3 lower density and increased machinability. Magnesium castings often contain additions of heavier elements, such as zinc, zirconium, and rare earth elements, which significantly improve high temperature performance. However, additions of these elements can lead to macrosegregational effects in castings, which are detectable by radiographic scans. The effect of these flow-line indications on alloy mechanical properties is not well quantified. An examination of these flow-line indications and their effects on mechanical properties in three magnesium-based casting alloys was performed here in order to determine the best practice for dealing with affected castings. Preliminary results suggest the flow-lines do not measurably impact bulk material properties. Three additional methods of characterizing three-dimensional material structures are also presented: a minimum spanning tree analysis is utilized to quantify local structure in Cu-Zr liquid phase simulations obtained from molecular dynamics; the radial distribution function is applied to directionally solidified Al-Si structures in an attempt to extract local spacing data; and the critical diameter measurement is also defined and applied to irregular eutectic Al-Si structures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of combined additions of Sc and Zr on the microstructure and tensile properties of the direct chill (DC) cast ingots of developmental Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys has been evaluated in this work. The properties in both the longitudinal and transverse directions of the cast ingots were determined in as-cast and cast plus heat-treated conditions, at room and cryogenic temperatures. Extensive microstructural evaluation was carried out using optical and electron microscopy, including orientation image microscopy by the electron backscatter diffraction technique. The Sc-containing developmental cast alloys showed the tensile properties, which are much better than the properties of any commercial cast Al alloys and are similar or even superior to the properties of 7075-T6 alloy forgings. The microstructural evolution, the strengthening mechanisms, optimum content of the dispersoid-forming elements, and the processing-structure-property correlations are discussed.
