Book Synopsis Treatment Options in Urological Cancer by : Jonathan Waxman
Download or read book Treatment Options in Urological Cancer written by Jonathan Waxman and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancer forms a large part of urological practice. Prostate cancer is the most significant and is the second most common cause of male cancer deaths with some 300,000 cases in the USA annually. Cancer of the bladder is also common. While treatment has been primarily surgical, recent years have seen an explosion of new drug therapies for urological cancers. All urologists, whether in training or in practice, need an up-to-date survey of the literature and key findings in this important and controversial field. This book takes each organ in turn (prostate, kidney, bladder, testis and penis) and tackles the controversies head-on by inviting chapters on various (often rival) treatments for each disease. Each section is then concluded by a commentary from the editor which draws together the various strands, outlines the principal areas of consensus and disagreement. Jonathan Waxman is an oncologist who specialises in urological tumours and has developed new treatments for prostate, bladder and kidney cancer and for terminal care, which are now part of standard practice. He founded the Prostate Cancer Charity and helped establish an all-party parliamentary group to improve cancer treatment and research throughout the UK.
Book Synopsis The Epidemiology of Cervical Cancer and Human Papillomavirus by : N. Muñoz
Download or read book The Epidemiology of Cervical Cancer and Human Papillomavirus written by N. Muñoz and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1992 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Use of sensitive molecular biological methods for detecting human papillomavirus (HPV) in epidemiological studies has produced convincing evidence that this virus plays a causal role in cervical cancer. This volume reviews the traditional and molecular epidemiological evidence, and the natural history of HPV infection. The various methods for type-specific detection of HPV are examined, as well as methods for identifying the presence of other sexually transmitted agents that have been postulated at various times as having a role. Applications of the knowledge of the importance of HPV in cervical cancer etiology that are discussed include use of detection of the virus in screening for women at risk of the cancer, and also in determining suitable clinical treatment of women with suspected precancerous lesions.

Book Synopsis Infections and Pregnancy by : Sumita Mehta
Download or read book Infections and Pregnancy written by Sumita Mehta and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-03-25 with total page 671 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a complete guide to the diagnosis and management of any infectious disease which may affect the mother or the fetus during pregnancy. Pregnancy is a unique condition in which the interplay of endocrine and immune influences leads to altered severity and susceptibility to infectious diseases. These infections, in turn, are a substantial cause of maternal and perinatal morbidity. The book discusses the immunologic, clinical and epidemiologic evidence for altered responses during pregnancy. Several infections have unique consequences in pregnancy. Some infections have vertical transmission, and their management focuses on decreasing perinatal transmission. Others can be transmitted transplacentally and cause congenital infection. While still, other common infections like gastroenteritis, UTI, tuberculosis, leprosy or certain dermatological and oral conditions can cause pregnancy complications. This book discusses all such diseases in detail as well as suggests means for early identification and appropriate treatment for them. A separate chapter adequately covers the novel coronavirus infection associated with management challenges in pregnant women. The book includes dedicated sections on postpartum infections and fetal outcomes associated with maternal infections. It reviews strategies to prevent infection in obstetrics that plays a key role in decreasing the global burden of maternal morbidity and mortality. The book is relevant for practicing obstetricians and gynecologists, post-graduate students of obstetrics and gynecology as well as general practitioners, family medicine specialists, primary health care workers and undergraduate medical students.

Download or read book Penile Disorders written by Hartmut Porst and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains a compilation of papers based on pres entations made at the International Symposium on Penile Disorders held in Hamburg, Germany, 26-27 January 1996, under the Chairmanship of Hartmut Porst. This was a unique conference in that it comprehensively addressed various disorders that affect the organ situated at the "center of the male", the penis. As an important beginning, the sociocultural aspects of the erect phallus were presented by G. Wagner from Copen hagen. The anatomy of the penis and the physiological con ditions of erection were then discussed by K. -P. J Unemann from Mannheim, Germany. Previous conferences on the penis had concentrated only on specific areas of disease such as impotence. However, it became readily apparent that at this conference something new for almost every as pect of disease would be discussed, including congenital disorders such as hypospadias and epispadias, sexually transmitted and noninfectious dermatological diseases, and congenital and acquired penile curvatures and penile fractures. An excellent presentation of managing penile cancer by stage related therapeutic decision was presented by S. C. MUller from Bonn, Germany. There is no better per son to present a discussion of Peyronie' s disease in 1996 from a historical and management perspective than J. Pryor from London, UK. This same degree of expertise was also demonstrated by I. Saenz de Tejada from Madrid, Spain, re garding priapism.
