Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The North American beaver (Castor canadensis) is one of the few extant mammals able to modify its surrounding landscape dramatically, often complicating its relationship with humans. However, the vast majority of research has been limited to north temperate regions, with almost no data regarding southern beaver populations. The focal point of this study was to understand the impact beaver impoundments on stream systems of warm temperate regions. Two sites in Thomasville, Georgia (Gatling Branch and Unnamed Creek) were selected for this study based on location, morphology, hydrology and active beaver populations. Sampling was conducted from November 2006 through April 2007, with April capturing the effects of extensive anthropogenic construction activities. For each system, two 100-m stretches, upstream and downstream of the beaver pond, and the pond proper were sampled. Measurements and/or samples included chemical / physical parameters (temperature, dissolved oxygen, specific conductivity and total suspended solids), macroinvertebrate communities and benthic organic matter storage. Statistical comparisons were made between compartments (upstream, downstream and pond), sampling periods and compartments relative to sampling period. During the pre-anthropogenic disturbance period, few parameters were longitudinally or temporally significant when compared between sampling compartment and sampling dates.
Book Synopsis The Effects of Beaver Dams on the Structure and Function of Invertebrate Communities in a Southeastern Coastal Plain Stream by : Damon L. Mullis

This book was released on 2014 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author's abstract: North American beavers were at the brink of extinction in the early 20th century, but over the past century populations have been rebounding. This increase in range and population size has raised interest as to their influence on aquatic ecosystems. Beaver are considered ecosystem engineers because they change the physical structure of aquatic systems through the construction of dams, which transform naturally flowing sections of rivers and streams into standing water. Such changes are known to influence habitat heterogeneity, organic matter transport and storage, and consequentially biological diversity. To my knowledge, no studies on the effects of beaver impoundments on benthic invertebrate assemblages and benthic organic matter standing stocks have been conducted in the SE Coastal Plain ecoregion. Furthermore, few studies have explored the influence of beaver dams on macroinvertebrate communities during drought conditions. The goal of this study was to assess the effects of beaver dams on organic matter standing stocks and benthic invertebrate assemblages in a Southeastern Coastal Plain stream during drought conditions. I addressed this goal by sampling during the severe-extreme drought conditions of 2011-2012, and comparing stream reaches currently impacted by beaver to segments without beaver dams, and also by comparing upstream and downstream segments within impacted reaches. Beaver impacted reaches retained significantly higher standing stocks of several major organic matter categories, including fine particulates (1 mm 250 μm) averaging 87.28 ±10.35 g AFDM m -2 compared to 31.06 ±4.83 g AFDM m -2 for reference sites (P=0.004), and coarse particulates (>1 mm) averaging 960.37 ±121.42 g AFDM m-2 compared to 622.96 ±143.33 g AFDM m-2 (P=0.04). Furthermore, there were no differences in benthic organic matter standing stocks within impacted reaches (i.e., upstream and downstream of beaver dams). Benthic macroinvertebrate abundance or biomass did not differ between impacted reaches and reference reaches, or within impacted reaches. Taxonomic diversity as calculated by the Shannon-Wiener Index (H') was significantly higher (P=0.03) at reference reaches (H'=1.16) over impacted reaches (H'=0.99), but did not differ within impacted reaches (P=0.30). Collector-gatherers consistently dominated macroinvertebrate assemblages accounting for more than half (65-91%) of the total community. In conclusion my study suggests that beaver activity can have an effect on the retention of organic materials in streams, with impacted sites retaining and storing significantly higher levels of benthic organic matter. In contrast with other studies, my results indicate that beaver dams had little effect on macroinvertebrate assemblages, at least during low flow conditions in SE Coastal Plain streams.

Book Synopsis Riparian Areas by : National Research Council
Download or read book Riparian Areas written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-10-10 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Clean Water Act (CWA) requires that wetlands be protected from degradation because of their important ecological functions including maintenance of high water quality and provision of fish and wildlife habitat. However, this protection generally does not encompass riparian areasâ€"the lands bordering rivers and lakesâ€"even though they often provide the same functions as wetlands. Growing recognition of the similarities in wetland and riparian area functioning and the differences in their legal protection led the NRC in 1999 to undertake a study of riparian areas, which has culminated in Riparian Areas: Functioning and Strategies for Management. The report is intended to heighten awareness of riparian areas commensurate with their ecological and societal values. The primary conclusion is that, because riparian areas perform a disproportionate number of biological and physical functions on a unit area basis, restoration of riparian functions along America's waterbodies should be a national goal.
Download or read book Saving the Dammed written by Ellen Wohl and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2019 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ability of beavers to create an abundant habitat for a diverse array of plants and animals has been analyzed time and again. The disappearance of beavers across the northern hemisphere, and what this effects, has yet to be comprehensively studied. Saving the Dammed analyzes the beneficial role of beavers and their dams in the ecosystem of a river, focusing on one beaver meadow in Colorado. In her latest book, Ellen Wohl contextualizes North St. Vrain Creek by discussing the implications of the loss of beavers across much larger areas. Saving the Dammed raises awareness of rivers as ecosystems and the role beavers play in sustaining the ecosystem surrounding rivers by exploring the macrocosm of global river alteration, wetland loss, and the reduction in ecosystem services. The resulting reduction in ecosystem services span things such as flood control, habitat abundance and biodiversity, and nitrate reduction. Allowing readers to follow her as she crawls through seemingly impenetrable spaces with slow and arduous movements, Wohl provides a detailed narrative of beaver meadows. Saving the Dammed takes readers through twelve months at a beaver meadow in Colorado's Rocky Mountain National Park, exploring how beavers change river valleys and how the decline in beaver populations has altered river ecosystems. As Wohl analyzes and discusses the role beavers play in the ecosystem of a river, readers get to follow her through tight, seemingly impenetrable, crawl spaces as she uncovers the benefit of dams.

Book Synopsis Restoration of Aquatic Ecosystems by : National Research Council
Download or read book Restoration of Aquatic Ecosystems written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aldo Leopold, father of the "land ethic," once said, "The time has come for science to busy itself with the earth itself. The first step is to reconstruct a sample of what we had to begin with." The concept he expressedâ€"restorationâ€"is defined in this comprehensive new volume that examines the prospects for repairing the damage society has done to the nation's aquatic resources: lakes, rivers and streams, and wetlands. Restoration of Aquatic Ecosystems outlines a national strategy for aquatic restoration, with practical recommendations, and features case studies of aquatic restoration activities around the country. The committee examines: Key concepts and techniques used in restoration. Common factors in successful restoration efforts. Threats to the health of the nation's aquatic ecosystems. Approaches to evaluation before, during, and after a restoration project. The emerging specialties of restoration and landscape ecology.

Book Synopsis The Eurasian Beaver Handbook by : Roisin Campbell-Palmer
Download or read book The Eurasian Beaver Handbook written by Roisin Campbell-Palmer and published by Pelagic Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2016-08-15 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beavers are widely recognised as a keystone species which play a pivotal role in riparian ecology. Their tree felling and dam building behaviours coupled with a suite of other activities create a wealth of living opportunities that are exploited by a range of other species. Numerous scientific studies demonstrate that beaver-generated living environments that are much richer in terms of both biodiversity and biomass than wetland environments from which they are absent. Emerging contemporary studies indicate clearly that the landscapes they create can afford sustainable, cost-effective remedies for water retention, flood alleviation, silt and chemical capture. Beaver activities, especially in highly modified environments, may be challenging to certain land use activities and landowners. Many trialled and tested methods to mitigate against these impacts, including a wide range of non-lethal management techniques, are regularly implemented across Europe and North America. Many of these techniques will be new to people, especially in areas where beavers are newly re-establishing. This handbook serves to discuss both the benefits and challenges in living with this species, and collates the wide range of techniques that can be implemented to mitigate any negative impacts. The authors of this handbook are all beaver experts and together they have a broad range of scientific knowledge and practical experience regarding the ecology, captive husbandry, veterinary science, pathology, reintroduction and management of beavers in both continental Europe and Britain.

Download or read book Guidelines for reintroductions and other conservation translocations written by Reintroduction and invasive species specialist groups' taskforce on moving plants and animals for conservation purposes and published by IUCN. This book was released on 2013 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As the world's biodiversity faces the incessant threats of habitat loss, invasive species and climate change, there is an increasing need to consider more direct conservation interventions. Humans have moved organisms between sites for their own purposes for millennia, and this has yielded benefits for human kind, but in some cases has led to disastrous impacts. In response to this complex aspect of conservation management, the IUCN Species Survival Commission (SSC) Reintroduction Specialist Group (RSG) and Invasive Species Specialist Group (ISSG) have revised and published the IUCN 'Guidelines for Reintroductions and Other Conservation Translocations'"--Website.
