This state-of-the-art collection is enhanced by a final chapter providing a critical appraisal of the major issues emerging from the individual studies in the light of current assumptions in the broader field of contact linguistics. Book excerpt: Les capacités en langue orale et écrite de la majorité des enfants sourds sont très déficitaires, contrairement aux capacités que ceux-ci développent en langue des signes en cas d'exposition précoce. Le rapport entre ces différentes capacités langagières a été étudié chez des enfants sourds bilingues de Suisse Romande, en langue des signes française et en français écrit. Les capacités de 39 sujets ont été évaluées, en production et en compréhension, au niveau discursif et morpho-syntaxique. D'autres facteurs pouvant influencer ces capacités (français oral, capacités cognitives, caractéristiques familiales et scolaires) ont aussi été considérés. Les résultats montrent un lien positif et très significatif entre les capacités développées en français écrit et en langue des signes française. La relation semble plus importante en compréhension qu'en production et sur le plan discursif que sur le plan morpho-syntaxique. En outre, les capacités langagières orales paraissent un facteur également important dans cette interaction.

Notre hypothèse de recherche est que la démarche de la dictée à l'expert peut être utilisée auprès d'un public sourd avec la langue des signes comme langue des interactions. Pour répondre à cette hypothèse, nous avons testé sur une base longitudinale l'efficacité de la démarche de dictée à l'adulte auprès de 5 enfants sourds locuteurs de la LSF scolarisés en CLIS dans une école de Nevers (Nièvre). L'analyse des corpus met à jour le rôle de la dictée à l'expert en LSF dans la progression de ces enfants vers la maîtrise de l'écrit.

The chapters focus on five pertinent areas reflecting different, but related research topics: * space in language and gesture, * point of view and referential shift, * morphosyntax of verbs in ASL, * gestural systems and sign language, and * language acquisition and gesture. Sign languages and gestural systems are produced in physical space; they manipulate spatial contrasts for linguistic and communicative purposes. In addition to exploring the different functions of space, researchers discuss similarities and differences between visual-gestural systems -- established sign languages, pidgin sign language (International Sign), "homesign" systems developed by deaf children with no sign language input, novel gesture systems invented by hearing nonsigners, and the gesticulation that accompanies speech. The development of gesture and sign language in children is also examined in both hearing and deaf children, charting the emergence of gesture ("manual babbling"), its use as a prelinguistic communicative device, and its transformation into language-like systems in homesigners. Finally, theoretical linguistic accounts of the structure of sign languages are provided in chapters dealing with the analysis of referential shift, the structure of narrative, the analysis of tense and the structure of the verb phrase in American Sign Language.
