Book excerpt: EN MILIEU AGRICOLE, LES AMENAGEMENTS ANTHROPIQUES, EN PARTICULIER LE RESEAU DE FOSSES, OCCASIONNENT DES DISCONTINUITES HYDROLOGIQUES QUI INFLUENT SUR LES ECHANGES ENTRE EAUX SUPERFICIELLES ET EAUX SOUTERRAINES. CE TRAVAIL DE THESE S'INTEGRE DANS LE CADRE DU PROGRAMME ALLEGRO-ROUJAN, ENTREPRIS PAR L'UMR SCIENCE DU SOL DE L'INRA-MONTPELLIER SUR LE BASSIN VERSANT EXPERIMENTAL DE ROUJAN (HERAULT), ET VISE DEUX OBJECTIFS PRINCIPAUX : I) IDENTIFIER LES MECANISMES DE CIRCULATION DE L'EAU DE SURFACE AU SEIN DU RESEAU DE FOSSES DEPUIS LA PARCELLE JUSQU'AU BASSIN VERSANT ET II) DETERMINER ET QUANTIFIER LE ROLE DES FOSSES DANS LES MECANISMES D'ECHANGES DE FLUX D'EAU ENTRE FOSSES ET NAPPES. CETTE ETUDE A COMPORTE UN IMPORTANT DISPOSITIF EXPERIMENTAL SUR LE TERRAIN POUR LE SUIVI DURANT DEUX ANS, DES DEBITS EN DIFFERENTS POINTS DU RESEAU DE FOSSES ET DU NIVEAU DE LA NAPPE. LES PRINCIPAUX RESULTATS CONCERNENT LES MECANISMES DE CIRCULATION DES EAUX DE SURFACE ET SOUTERRAINES SUR LE BASSIN VERSANT DE ROUJAN, L'IMPACT DU ROLE DES FOSSES SUR LES ECHANGES ENTRE LA SURFACE ET LE MILIEU SOUTERRAIN EN FONCTION DES CONDITIONS CLIMATIQUES ET DES CARACTERISTIQUES TOPOGRAPHIQUES DU MILIEU. LE RESEAU DE FOSSES D'ORIGINE ANTHROPIQUE A UNE INFLUENCE IMPORTANTE, MAIS VARIABLE DANS LE TEMPS ET DANS L'ESPACE : IL PRESENTE SIMULTANEMENT DES ZONES INFILTRANTES ET DES ZONES DRAINANTES, DETERMINEES PAR L'ALTITUDE RELATIVE DU FOND DE FOSSE PAR RAPPORT A CELLE DE LA NAPPE. CES RESULTATS AURONT UNE IMPLICATION DIRECTE POUR TOUTE APPROCHE DE MODELISATION DES ECHANGES ENTRE NAPPES ET FOSSES ; LES PRINCIPAUX PARAMETRES ET CONDITIONS A CONNAITRE SONT : LES CARACTERISTIQUES GEOMETRIQUES DU FOSSE, LES PROPRIETES HYDRODYNAMIQUES DES PAROIS ET DU FOND DES FOSSES, LE GRADIENT HYDRAULIQUE ENTRE LA NAPPE ET LE FOSSE ET L'IDENTIFICATION DES CONDITIONS INITIALES DES CRUES.

This book was released on 2006 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: L'OBJECTIF DE CE TRAVAIL EST DE CONTRIBUER A LA COMPREHENSION DU FONCTIONNEMENT HYDROLOGIQUE D'UN BASSIN VERSANT MEDITERRANEEN, NOTAMMENT A L'OCCASION DE SES CRUES. IL EST COMPOSE D'UN PREMIER VOLET EXPERIMENTAL DESTINE A L'OBSERVATION DU COMPORTEMENT DES EAUX SOUTERRAINES. CE VOLET INCLUT DES MESURES DE PRESSION DE L'EAU DANS LE SOL ET DE NIVEAUX DES NAPPES (FUGITIVES OU PERENNES) SOUS UN VERSANT (LIGNE DE PLUS GRANDE PENTE PERPENDICULAIRE A LA RIVIERE), ET UNE ANALYSE APPROFONDIE DES SOLS DU VERSANT: GRANULOMETRIES, CONDUCTIVITES HYDRAULIQUES IN SITU MESUREES A L'AIDE DE DIFFERENTS APPAREILLAGES, MESURES DE LA RETENTION EN EAU DES SOLS ETC. LES PROPRIETES HYDRODYNAMIQUES DES SOLS EN PLACE SONT EGALEMENT DECRITES. UTILISANT CETTE DESCRIPTION HYDRODYNAMIQUE, ON TENTE ENSUITE DE MODELISER LE COMPORTEMENT DU VERSANT LORSQU'IL EST SOUMIS A LA PLUIE. LA MODELISATION CHERCHE A REPRODUIRE LES INFILTRATIONS ET LES MOUVEMENTS DE NAPPES OBSERVES. POUR CE FAIRE ON DEVELOPPE UN MODELE D'INFILTRATION ET DE MONTEE DE NAPPE DANS UNE ZONE INCLINEE D'UN SOL MULTICOUCHE. POUR RESOUDRE L'EQUATION DE RICHARDS DIFFERENTES METHODES ONT ETE DEVELOPPEES. LA MEILLEURE, DANS NOTRE TRAVAIL, S'AVERE ETRE CELLE QUI UTILISE LES DIFFERENCES FINIES AVEC UN PROCEDE ITERATIF DES DIRECTIONS ALTERNEES. LES RESULTATS DE LA MODELISATION CONFIRMENT QU'EN CAS DE PLUIES IMPORTANTES, UNE NAPPE PEUT S'ELEVER RELATIVEMENT RAPIDEMENT A PROXIMITE DE LA RIVIERE ET L'ALIMENTER. TOUTEFOIS, LES FORTS DEBITS NE PEUVENT S'EXPLIQUER QUE PAR LA SATURATION DE L'ENSEMBLE DU PROFIL DU SOL QUI ENGENDRE LA MONTEE DE CES NAPPES ET PAR LES ECOULEMENTS DE SURFACE QUE CES AIRES SATUREES ENTRAINENT

Book excerpt: Water is vital for life, and its availability has been a concern for mankind throughout the ages. Its presence has always been ascertained in a variety of ways and the development of human society everywhere is connected with various forms of water management. Man also needed to manage water to find protection from its dangers and the need for that is increasing. In the coming decades, the impact of climate change is expected to intensify floods and droughts, affect groundwater resources, raise sea levels, increase pollution and enhance the frequency and magnitude of disasters. Societies around the world are challenged to adapt to these threats to ensure water security, economic prosperity and environmental and cultural sustainability. This book deals with the heritage of water management and the use that was made of water, as well as the impact of water management on heritage. An example of the former may be an ancient irrigation system in the Filipines or in the Middle East that still functions today, while the latter may reflect the importance of maintaining groundwater levels for the preservation of organic remains on archaeological sites or of wooden piles underneath standing buildings. In either case the papers in this book reflect the dynamic nature of water, and hence the equally dynamic relation between water management and heritage. This publication follows up on a Heritage and Water conference in Amsterdam, the first of its kind. Its main purpose is to credibly present the importance and value of heritage and historical experience for water and sustainable development, and vice versa, present the importance of water management for the protection of heritage. It presents evolving insights and concepts about Water and about Heritage from a variety of disciplines, policy and public perspectives illustrated with cases studies and aims to connect decision makers with experts such as engineers, archaeologists, historians, geographers, ecologist and landscape architects

This book was released on 2012 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Thematic Study is a joint venture between ICOMOS, the advisory body to UNESCO on cultural sites, and the International Astronomical Union. It presents an overall vision on astronomical heritage, attempts to identify what constitutes "outstanding universal significance to humankind" in relation to astronomy, and identifies broad issues that could arise in the assessment of cultural properties relating to astronomy. This is the first Thematic Study in any field of science heritage. It is elaborated using examples of properties from around the world, including some already on the World Heritage List or national Tentative Lists. The subject matter ranges from early prehistory to modern astrophysics and space heritage, and also prominently includes dark sky issues and modern observatory sites. An e-version of the Thematic Study was published in June 2010 in time to be presented to the 2010 meeting of UNESCO's World Heritage Committee, where it was duly approved. It has been circulated officially by the WHC to all of UNESCO's National Commissions. This full-colour paperback edition with some updates, and reformatted to new ICOMOS standards, was published in 2011 and is now offered for public sale.

Book excerpt: Sediments are increasingly recognized as both a carrier and a possible source of contaminants in aquatic systems, and they may also affect groundwater quality and agricultural products when disposed on land. Four aspects are covered reflecting the development of knowledge in particle-associated pollutants during the past twenty-five years: - the identification, surveillance, monitoring and control of sources and distribution of pollutants, - the evaluation of solid/solution relations of contaminants in surface waters, - the study of in-situ processes and mechanisms of pollutant transfer in various compartments of the aquatic ecosystems, - the assessment of the environmental impact of particle-bound contaminants, i.e. the development of sediment quality criteria. A final chapter focusses on practical aspects concerning contaminated sediments.
