Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rocky Mountain Wild Flowers, 1930 In catering to the public through the medium of this catalog, we Wish to say it is our earnest desire to be worthy of the confidence of every patron, that every order, regardless of how small or how large, will be filled with the most scrupulous care with the best quality and size of varieties, and true to name. All flower lovers should appreciate the opportunity they now have of becoming familiar with the beautiful wild flowers of the Rocky Mountain region. There is no practical reason why many of our most beautiful wild flowers should not be much in evidence in cultivated gardens, combining as they do, ease of culture with an airiness and grace, and beautiful soft, re fined colors, which places them in a class entirely by them selves. We endeavor to give sufficient cultural instructions to make success reasonably certain, and if followed, our patrons will experience no difficulty in attaining satisfactory results. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plants of Rocky Mountain National Park The wild flowers of Rocky Mountain National Park are one of its main attractions. They paint its fields, meadows, hillsides, and rocky gorges in all the colors of the rainbow. There has been a con stant demand for an illustrated guide to these flowers, and this publica tion has been prepared in response to that demand. It is the result of several years' study of the plants of the region. Emphasis has been put on the outstanding field characters of the plants described and on their habitats. Keys for identification and an illustrated glossary are included. The chapter on Mountain Plants at Home deals with the relations between the plants and their severe mountain environ ment and their adaptations to that environment. The keys have been made as practical and simple as possible. They have been previously published, tested, and revised, and the writer feels that they will be useful to all persons who are seriously interested in the identification of our common wild flowers, whether or not they have had training in botany. In order to keep the keys from being long and unwieldy, some of the inconspicuous plants are not included. However, the names of all seed plants and ferns known to grow in the park are given in the text. Technical terms have been avoided as much as possible, but because it is impossible to differentiate between related plants by using only every-day English, a few technical terms have been employed to assure accuracy. These are adequately explained by drawings and definitions in the glossary. Approximately 700 species are included. Specimens of most of these have been collected by the writer and are in the herbarium of the Rocky Mountain National Park. Most of the collecting has been done on the eastern side of the Continental Divide, and it is probable that some plants not included herein will be found on the western slope. A thorough study of the grass and sedge families has not been attempted, but lists of those species known to occur have been in cluded. The region that has been intensively studied is that of the Rocky Mountain National Park and the territory surrounding Estes Park, but this book will be found useful above feet throughout the mountains of northern Colorado and southern Wyoming. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Field Book of Western Wild Flowers In this little book a very large number of the commoner wild flowers growing in the United States, west of the Rocky Mountains, are pictured and described. It is the first attempt to supply a popular field book for the whole West. The field is vast, including within its limits all sorts of climate and soil, producing thousands of flowers, infinite in variety and wonderful in beauty, their environment often as different as that of Heine's Pine and Palm. In such strange homes as the Grand Canyon and the Petrified Forest of Arizona, or the deserts of Utah and southern California, we find the oddest desert plants, forced to curious expedients in order to sustain life amidst almost perpetual heat and drought, but often displaying blossoms of such brilliance and delicacy that they might well be envied by their more fortunate sisters, flourishing beside shady waterfalls, in a "happy valley" like Yosemite, or a splendid mountain garden, such as spreads in many-colored parterres of bloom around the feet of Mt. Rainier. On the wind-swept plains hundreds of flowers are to be found; many kinds of hardy plants brighten the salty margins of the sea cliffs, or bloom, at the edge of the snow on rocky mountain peaks, while;quantities of humble, everyday flowers border our country roadsides or tint the hills and meadows with lavish color. The field includes the States of Washington, Oregon, California, Idaho, Nevada, Utah and Arizona and to designate this whole field the term West is used in this book. The term Northwest designates Washington, Oregon, northern Idaho, and northern California, and the term Southwest covers southern California and Arizona. The flowers found only in the Rocky Mountains are not included, and it may be noted here that exceedingly few of the western flowers cross the Rockies and are found in the East. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Western Flower Guide: Wild Flowers of the Rockies and West to the Pacific The preparation of a Pacific Coast Wild Flower Guide OI tne present small proportions has naturally involved a large exercise Of elimination. The flowers herein illustrated number 250, and the brief descriptions in non-technical language include besides these a few more whose resem blance to certain Of those depicted makes identification relatively easy. The selection Of the subjects has been based mainly upon the hold which such flowers have upon the popular heart on the Pacific Coast, and also to some extent by the part they have played in the human life Of the region. A few introduced plants - not uncommon in other parts Of the world, and some of them even homely - have been included in the descriptions, because their abundance, their uses, or their habits make them subjects Of interest to travelers and the general student. While the region covered in the Guide is principally the three Coast States, California, Oregon, and Washington, in many cases the plants described are also found eastward in the States from Idaho south to Arizona, and in some cases as far east as Colorado, New Mexico, and Texas. Plains and valleys, seaside and mountains, as well as the Southwestern desert region (a marvellously rich floral field for a part Of the year) are represented. While this book has been prepared out Of a personal acquaintance of many years with the field, the author desires to acknowledge his indebtedness to the following works upon which he has had occasion to draw for special descriptions and points - Gray' s Synoptical Flora of North America, Jepson' s Flora Of California (in course of publication), Hall's Compositae of Southern California and Yosemite Flora, Parson's Wild Flowers Of California, Armstrong's Western Wild Flowers, Meehan's Native Flowers and Ferns Of the United States, and the valuable-monographs of Chestnut, Coville, Havard, and Barrows on the Indian uses of native plants. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wild Flowers East, of the Rockies Every book has a reason for its being, - or should have. There are excellent flower books, galore, but apparently there is a break in the series into which it is hoped the present volume will make a welcome fit. We are living in a progressive age, an inquisitive age, an age in which we want to know the names and meaning of all we see and hear. I have always held that a well-executed colored picture, as a means of identification, is worth pages of text. Of course the text is necessary to call attention to the salient points of the picture. In the case of flowers, birds, mammals, etc., the habits, ranges, sizes and other important points must be obtained from the text, but the picture, itself, forms the basis of quick and sure identification. I was practically brought up among birds and, consequently, flowers, because the two are inseparable companions in the fields. Wherever I wandered, I had one eye open for "new" flowers. Every such prize went home with me; if not carried in the hand, why, - in the top of the hat. No sooner home than out came the old "Gray's," the microscope and dissecting points. Sister and I eagerly weighed the evidence, placing the "find" in one family and then another, as discrepancies were found, until at last, we had it cornered down to the family, the genus and, finally, the exact species. Every new invention is designed to accomplish some end quicker or better than it has been done before. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mountain Wild Flowers of America: A Simple and Popular Guide to the Names and Descriptions of the Flowers That Bloom Above the Clouds "When the book of life falls open at the page of spring," who does not long to enter the kingdom of Nature and wander therein, with bright-hued flowers abloom about his feet and the silent, scintillating peaks standing circlewise above his head? High up where the snow-crowned mountain monarchs rule over an enchanting land of foliage, ferns, and fungi, outspanned in sunshine beneath the broad blue tent of the western sky, the alpine meadows are ablaze with starry blossoms. Held close in the curved arms of the cliffs, these patches of verdure and wondrous-tinted flowers are a revelation to the traveller. From the mountains of the Yukon and Alaska to the hills of Nova Scotia and New England, in the Rockies, the Selkirks, and the vast mountain ranges of Montana, Dakota, Washington, Oregon, California, and other western states, one will find that the same miracle has been wrought. On the lower levels, white-flowered, scarlet-fruited shrubs stretch out long branches, weighted with clustered loveliness, across the tiny ribbon-like trails that man has cut deep into the heart of the primeval forest. Over the valleys the water ways have spread an emerald tide of verdure, set with islands of flaming Painted-cups, blue Gentians, and purple Vetches; while higher up the slopes of the mountains are carpeted with myriads of yellow Lilies, Gaillardias, and Arnicas, - a glorious Field of the Cloth of Gold. The herds have abandoned their flocks beloved, The wise'men have journeyed from'distant parts, TO proffer their incense, gold, and myrrh, Whilst we have naught but our sin-stained hearts. Oh, these sin-stained hearts! We pause in distress; Our hope'and joy for a while are chilled'; But anon we picture the Babe's sweet eyes Our courage revives, our fears are stilled. For the heart that is sad with remembered sin, The heart that is weary and sore oppressed, Or the poor heart crushed with some untold pain, May be just the heart that the Child loves best. Anon we will pass through the cold, drear night TO the stable blest, our homage to pay, And there will we kneel at the manger's side, In a thrill of delight, till the dawn Of day.
