Book excerpt: Entertainment critic and film noir author Carroll Quint gets a panicky call from his mother, former movie starlet Karen Kass. Vicky Vandamn, a roommate of Karen’s some thirty years ago when they worked at Talbot Studios, disappeared from Hollywood under mysterious circumstances. Now she’s been found dead on her houseboat in nearby Sausalito, a reported suicide victim. Quint’s mother is certain that Vicky, who was involved with a rough Hollywood crowd, was murdered. “Act like one of those private eyes in your book, dear. And find out who killed her.” Quint tries to do just that, and soon finds himself tangled up with lazy cops, a paranoid PI, a billionaire former movie-studio head, and a peeping tom—who kept a very close eye on Vandamn. When all appears to be lost, Quint’s mother comes up with a revealing old still photo and a clue involving Fred Astaire’s hands that sets Quint on a collision course with the murderer. This second in the series delivers another dynamic story and an entertaining coterie of characters.

Book excerpt: After leaving boarding school to study at the London Academy of Drama and Music, Love Bukowski is learning a lot, especially about love. Too bad the guy she's falling for is off-limits. But she's got plenty to take her mind (if not her lips) off said British Boy. And it's not like there isn't enough going on back in the States. For starters, Love's dad has a new girlfriend, her Aunt Mable is fighting breast cancer, the guy she left behind hooked up with the biggest you-know-what on campus, and her vocal lessons keep getting harder. Maybe life is trying to tell her something-or maybe she's just distracted by all that London (and love) have to offer.

Book excerpt: Fifteen-year-old Jennifer Brice Hamilton has been subjected to her mother’s new way of life ever since her parents’ divorce two years earlier - a move to a lower tax bracket in Chicago, an undesirable school, and her mother’s newest boyfriend: Phil. Jennifer rebels. Her mother’s answer to the “handful-slash-Jennifer” is to pack her up and send her to her grandma’s, whom Jennifer has not seen in almost three years. Her mother’s lusty plan is for Jennifer to reside there 'til Christmas. Jennifer captures her life in Flamingo Junction, Florida, with her grandmother in an ongoing diary of sorts - a sketchbook that she has titled Jenniferology - The Study of Jennifer. Jennifer’s grandmother, Mama Rudeen, lives in a retirement community called Camelot in North Florida. Mama Rudeen is not what Jennifer expected, nor are her grandmother’s friends - the gals: Miss Maggie Pearl, Miss Addie, and Miss Gaynell...and the guy - Sir Stuckie. Jennifer envisioned octogenarians sitting around waiting to take their last breath. She discovers that retirees have a zest for life. And, more importantly, they define to Jennifer what unconditional love truly means. Maybe it takes a retirement village to raise a child.

Book excerpt: *FROM THE INTERNATIONALLY BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF CALLING MAJOR TOM* ''I loved it. Nostalgic without being saccharine, hopeful, real characters with edge. A brilliant book.'' - Hayley Webster ''I adored it! Truly uplifting. Exactly what people want and need to read right now.'' - Daisy Buchanan For elderly churchwarden Arthur Calderbank, there''s no place like home. His home just so happens to be a graveyard. He keeps himself to himself, gets on with his job, and visits his wife everyday for a chat. When one day he finds someone else has been to see his wife - and has left flowers on her grave - he is determined to solve the mystery of who and why. He receives unlikely help from a group of teenage girls as he searches for answers, and soon learns that there is more to life than being surrounded by death. Set during the 90s, when we were all just common people believing things could only get better, this is an uplifting story about the power of a little kindness, friendship and community. For readers who enjoy Sue Townsend, Ruth Hogan and Joanna Cannon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first authoritative biography of one of the most fabled women of the twentieth century—Princess Diana—that paints an insightful and haunting portrait, a “chilling vision of loneliness, need, and untreated mental illness” (USA Today). “[Sally Bedell] Smith has done a remarkable job extracting what’s genuinely pertinent and interesting about Diana. . . . If you’re going to read one Diana book, this should be it.”—Newsweek For all that has been written about Diana—the books, the commemorative magazines, the thousands of newspaper articles—we have lacked a sophisticated understanding of the woman, her motivations, and her extreme needs. Most books have been exercises in hagiography or character assassination, sometimes both in the same volume. With Diana in Search of Herself, acclaimed biographer Sally Bedell Smith has written the first truly balanced and nuanced portrait of the Princess of Wales, in all her emotional complexity. Drawing on scores of exclusive interviews with Diana’s friends and associates, Smith explores the events and relationships that shaped the Princess, the flashpoints that sent her careening through life, her deep feelings of unworthiness, her view of men, and her perpetual journey toward a better sense of self. By making connections not previously explored, Diana in Search of Herself allows readers to see Diana as she really was, from her birth to her tragic death. Original in its reporting and surprising in its conclusions about the severity of Diana’s mental health problems, Diana in Search of Herself is the smartest and most substantive biography ever written about this mesmerizing woman. Book excerpt: Greeneyes returned to San Francisco from his trek to the Lower Farm and returned to working again, at the Embarcadero, unloading cargo ships with the longshoremen. Through the act of local union politics Greeneyes finds himself getting pink-slipped and without a means of income. Searching the want ads in the Chronicle, Greeneyes finds an interesting ad for employment many miles north of the city in Mendocino County. Greeneyes makes the call and has an over-the-phone-interview with project manager, Jack Fender, who hires Greeneyes on the spot. Jack asks Greeneyes if he can start as soon as Monday and Greeneyes agrees. He gets directions, says good bye to some close friends and prepares to leave the city early Sunday morning. The August days in San Francisco are cold and damp. As Greeneyes stands on the entrance of the Golden Gate Bridge hitchhiking north on Route 101 a slow walking figure approaches Greeneyes through the mist and fog. The bushy-haired figure with black-rimmed eye glasses and a guitar case held in his left hand introduces himself as "Buckwheat Hopkins." Greeneyes finds Buckwheat to be a very mysterious and fidgety character who appears to be compelled to leave the city. Greeneyes and Buckwheat learn that they're both going to the same place, The Upper Lake, at Lake Pillsbury Ranch, to work for Jack Fender. Buckwheat admits to Greeneyes that he has never hitchhiked before and that he really didn't know where he was going, so the two hook up and travel together. Greeneyes has no problem sharing his journey with Buckwheat. Greeneyes observes that Buckwheat is under-nourished, pale and a bit introverted, but Greeneyes does not push the issue and he waits until Buckwheat wants to talk. However, the one area where Buckwheat is open and intriguing is with his masterful way of playing the guitar and singing the blues. Buckwheat's ability to play any request on demand is a extraordinary phenomenon. Greeneyes and Buckwheat finally make it to the Upper Lake and start their employment in the most spectacular setting in the middle of the Mendocino National Forest. The ranch is laden with misfits and nomads each with their own respective stories. Some were caught up believing that drug induced states of mind were sure to lead them to the freedom they were desperately searching for. Greeneyes and Buckwheat become close friends and Buckwheat finally confides in his friend about the baggage he's carrying and why he needed to leave the city in such a hurry. The time Greeneyes and Buckwheat spend together in the serene and peaceful mountains creates a bond and ties a knot of friendship that leads them to their individual freedom.

Book excerpt: I grew up in the Highlands of Scotland and I became a musician while still at School. Then I made my first musical instrument at the age of just 13 years, an Appalachian Dulcimer. I joined the Royal Air Force at the age of 18. I served for 9 years. I worked at many of our secret establishments. Even during my military career, I continued to play in bands, as well as to write music. When time would allow, I made guitars for myself, although most of these ended up in my friends hands rather than mine. With the bands that I played in, I have been fortunate enough to have recorded 32 albums. Most of these albums were with my Irish Rebel Band, aptly named ‘1916’. I later formed my own company making bespoke guitars (Gordon Guitars UK) The pressure of running so many ventures simultaneously eventually took its toll and a series of heart attacks followed. So I looked for a new and more sedate way to direct my creative juices and writing thrillers fitted that bill perfectly. This will be my fifth thriller and like the other books, this novel is a mixture of both fact and fiction. I prefer to call this genre ‘Faction’. So any similarity to people in real life, is purely coincidental. Names and places may have been changed to protect the innocent.

Book excerpt: A bestselling British birder, naturalist, writer and broadcaster leads us on a springtime journey of discovery through daily walks in the area surrounding his home, highlighting the joys of connecting with wildlife and our environment. As spring arrives, Stephen Moss’s Somerset garden is awash with birdsong: chiffchaffs, wrens, robins and more. Overhead, buzzards soar, ravens tumble and the season gathers pace. But this equinox is unlike any other. As the nation goes into lockdown, Stephen records the wildlife around his home, with his fox-red Labrador, Rosie, by his side. When old routines fall away, and blue skies are no longer crisscrossed by contrails, they discover the bumblebees, butterflies and birdsong on their local patch. This evocative account underlines how a global crisis changed the way we relate to the natural world, giving us hope for the future. And it puts down a marker for a new normal: when, during that brief but unforgettable spring, nature gave us comfort, hope and joy.
