We were successful a second time in the color rush, but with that we put childish things behind us and form ing our ideas on those of our sister class, the one of 1906, we steadfastly devoted our energies to the more serious life of the school. That year we included the Senior class in our banquet and 'ou this occasion we chose the jonquil as our class flower that it might be a symbol Of the harmony of our affections as well as Of our colors'. In the spring we were the Seniors guests at a launch ride up the river. We were less light hearted that Commence ment than the previous one. Its separations were harder for us and we looked ahead with a new appreciation of what our Own would mean to us. This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences, Sporting and Otherwise, of Early Days in Rockford, Ill Doct. Josiah C. Goodhue, the subject of this sketch, of whom a more extended notice is given in the body of this work, and author of the name Rock Ford, was born at Putney, Vermont in 1803; graduated at Yale Medical College and commenced the practice of his profession at St. Thomas, Upper Canada, in 1824, where he was married to Catherine Dunn. He migrated to Chicago in 1832, and was prominent in the affairs of that city until he came to Rockford to reside in 1838. Doct. Goodhue was one of the founders of what afterwards became Rush Medical College at Chicago, and was elected alderman of the first ward at the first election under city organization in March 1837. His daughter, Mrs. C. F. Holland, now of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, who has heard him relate the incident of naming the town, supplies me with these facts. During the summer of 1835, DanielS. Haight and Germanicus Kent, then residing at what is now Rockford, William H. Gilman of Belvidere, John P. Chapin and Ebenezer Peck of Chicago, and Stephen Edgel, afterwards of St. Louis, met at the office of Doct. Goodhue on Lake street in Chicago, to name the claim, or mill privilege, which they hoped would at some time in the future become a town. All these were interested in the claim, as was Luther O. Crocker, for many years after a citizen of Freeport, Illinois. Mrs. Kent had suggested "Midway" as an appropriate title, it being nearly equidistant from Chicago and Galena, which name none of the interested parties approved. Various names were suggested and rejected, until Doct. Goodhue said "Why not call it Rock Ford, from the splendid rockbottom ford on the river there?" It seemed an inspiration, and was adopted unanimously. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis Industrial and Picturesque Rockford, Vol. 4 (Classic Reprint) by : Eugene Browne
Download or read book Industrial and Picturesque Rockford, Vol. 4 (Classic Reprint) written by Eugene Browne and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial and Picturesque Rockford, Vol. 4 Now Rockford is a city of thirty thousand progressive people; brimful of busi ness and bustle, and toiling tirelessly. Her citizens are pleased with her past, proud of her present, and fulsome for her future. The fleeting years have made much of her and she stands today a queen amid queens and destined for great ends. Men come and go; clouds form and burst; stars rise and fade; but fair Rockford came to stay. Her pulse beats with enduring vigor and the chill of decreptitude can never reach her heart. It is not the intention of this little book, however, to give an unnatural gloss to her present or future. We deal only in facts; cold, hard realities. The city was settled by sturdy men from New York and New England, and their descendants are here to day. They are not rainbow Chasers, fiction fanciers or snake charmers; they are citizens with a world of faith in the prowess of their own right arms. Unaided they have established a wonderful manufacturing municipality. Without soliciting outside capital they have started hundreds of industries whose product foots up many millions every year. They have created a city with broad paved streets, luxuriant homes, unequalled water and sewer systems and perfect fire and police protection; a city where good government and enterprise march hand in hand. The men who have made this rose to blossom are in a position to talk facts. Facts are what they speak today. They are talking to you. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rockford College Annual, 1908 Since 1890, with the exception of one year spent in study, Miss Gulliver had been Head of the Department of Philosophy and Biblical Literature in the Seminary and in the College, and during the prolonged illness of Miss Emily K. Reynolds, she had been Acting President. Miss Gulliver is the daughter of the Rev. John Putnam Gulliver, D. D., LL. D President of Knox College from. 1868 to 1872, and Stone Professor of the Relations of Christianity and Science in Andover Theological Seminary from 1879 until his death in 1894. Dr. Gulliver was perhaps best known as a reform-er, a close personal friend of Governor Buckingham, the war governor of Connecticut. Before the founding of any of the prominent Colleges for women, he was an earnest advocate of the higher education of women. The devotion of Dr. Gulliver to the cause of education has been continued in the work of his daughter. Miss Gulliver received her first degree as a member of the first class of Smith College, 1879. After some years spent in study, largely under the direction of her father, she received from Smith College in 1888 the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. From 1890 to 1892 she held the position of Head of the Department of Philosophy and Biblical Literature in Rockford Semi nary. The following year she spent in Germany doing advanced work in philosophy at the University of Leipsic under the direction of Professor Wilhelm Wundt. From that time Miss Gulliver has been Head of the Department of Philosophy and Biblical Literature in Rockford College, and, much to the satisfaction of all, continues her work in ethics and Bible. This book was released on 2018-03-06 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rockford College Annual, 1909, Vol. 2 The next fall we were Juniors and with two new members made up a Class of eleven. It was now our time to take under our protection the large entering class. We helped them get established in'the school life and they in turn were our loyal supporters in every way. How proud we were when they, inspired by our Cheers, won the sophomore-freshman basket ball game. We felt the honor of the victory-as much as they. But the most noteworthy event of the year was Junior Vine-day. With solemn rites the ivy. Was planted and christened before the admiring eyes of the Freshmen, who loyallyrose in the cold gray dawn to be present at the ceremony. This was followed by a breakfast, and although our rival Classes appeared to consider the event as not worthy of their attention, I am sure they could not but admire the class that was soon to enter upon its last year. At Class day, too, we lent our sup port to make the day as successful as possible. When at the Close of the exercises the president of the Seniors transferred the cap and gown to the Junior president, we felt that at last we were to attain that state for which we had been striving for three years. We came back last fall glad to wear the cap and gown and enjoy the honor and distinction of the Senior. Early in the year the Sophomore Class invited us to a dinner - but where it was to be given remained a secret. How ever, we had enjoyed their hospitality too often to ask any questions, and at the progressive dinner which it proved to be, all former banquets seemed indeed but insignificant. Ltis with due caution that I mention that which brings sadness to the hearts of the Junior Class - the cane hunt. Eager for some excitement we hid the cane which was to give the Juniors many aweary hour of hunting. For days they walked the campus gazing apparently into the heavens, and indeed I heard it said that some of the Preps feared they had gone mad from over study. But it was nothing as terrible as that; they were merely searching for the cane. To cut short the sorrowful tale, it is enough to say that we are joyfully awaiting the banquet to which the Juniors have inxdted us.
