Download or read book Anxious Objects written by Patterson Sims and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This publication accompanies the first survey of Willie Cole's work from the late 1980s to the present. Cole was born and raised in New Jersey and has resided in the state his entire life. The exhibition and catalogue focus on Cole's mixed media sculptural works made from salvaged irons, blow dryers, ironing boards, high-heeled shoes, lawn jockeys, and bicycle parts; paintings and drawings made of iron scorch marks, and prints. Cole's consumer and domestic objects assume the appearance of objects from another time, culture, or place, transformed into powerful cultural and spiritual evocations referencing African and global culture. His art is solidly based in studious appreciation rather than humorous imitation or ironic appropriation." "The exhibition was organized by Patterson Sims. In this catalogue, Sims offers a broad introduction to Cole and detailed descriptions of the works included in the show. The text traces Cole's thinking, process, and evolution and the influence of his life-long residency in New Jersey. This catalogue also includes an insightful interview between the artist and Leslie King-Hammond, Dean of Graduate Studies, Maryland Institute College of Art; a short essay by Lowery Stokes Sims, President of the Studio Museum in Harlem, related to Cole's pivotal 1988-89 artist residency there; and an extensive chronology and professional history of the artist."--BOOK JACKET.
Book Synopsis Subversion and Surrealism in the Art of Honoré Sharrer by : M. Melissa Wolfe
Download or read book Subversion and Surrealism in the Art of Honoré Sharrer written by M. Melissa Wolfe and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2017-01-01 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book offers the first critical reassessment of an artist whose mature oeuvre constitutes a rich and often disquieting critique that is equal parts wit, seduction, and bite. Honorae Sharrer (1920-2009) was a major figure in the years surrounding World War II, though her commitment to leftist ideals and an alternate trajectory of surrealism put her at increasing odds with the political and artistic climate of the time"--
Download or read book Robert Qualters written by Vicky A. Clark and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2014-02-15 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teeming with convulsive energy, raw brush strokes, and Fauvist colors, the paintings of Robert Qualters reflect the multifaceted and kinetic spirit of the artist himself. In these pages, the art historian Vicky A. Clark presents the first in-depth study of the art and life of this iconic Pittsburgh artist. Complemented by over eighty color images, Clark follows Qualters's development from early childhood sketches through his recent autobiographical work. As she reveals, Qualters is truly a quotidian raconteur, who infuses allegory, narrative, and memory into his paintings of urban landscapes, neighborhoods, lunch counters, and amusement parks. Here, we witness coming of age and sexuality, economic hardship, working-class identities, death and rebirth, and many other themes, both personal and universal. As Clark shows, Qualters's oeuvre is the culmination of a lifelong artistic journey, recalling a host of influences from Japanese prints to Matisse, Bruegel, and Rembrandt. Throughout his career, and despite the popularity of his contemporaries, many of whom adopted abstract painting, Qualters has maintained a distinctly representational style, keeping a close link to his audience through the power of visual storytelling.

Book Synopsis Eric Serritella: Walking with Softer Steps by : Jason Jacques Gallery Press
Download or read book Eric Serritella: Walking with Softer Steps written by Jason Jacques Gallery Press and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Serritella describes his new work for the exhibition Walking With Softer Steps at Jason Jacques Gallery , as an evolution towards the quieter side of trees and form:"In my early works there was often an overabundance of branches and thus competing lines within the form. In simplest terms, the sculptures were often 'busy'.While they fit the context of the pieces at the time, my philosophies about what I was trying to express evolved. As my work matured I found that texturing the details was becoming second nature and I began focusing more attention on the form. I realized that my goal was to get people to walk with softer steps on this planet. It was this statement that resonated with me so strongly that I then set out to have it reflected in the work."Serritella aims to create work that beautifully flows with rhythm and grace.Hidden within the overall form and the incredible level of realistic detail there is a subtle quietness. A flow. A rhythm. A peace.

Book Synopsis Monet's Waterloo Bridge by : Nancy Norwood
Download or read book Monet's Waterloo Bridge written by Nancy Norwood and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Impressionist master Claude Monet began over forty versions of Waterloo Bridge during his three London sojourns between 1899 and 1901. He viewed his paintings of the landmark bridge both individually and as an ensemble, collectively expressing his sense of the essential subject - the atmosphere and colors of the fog-bound landscape of London's Thames River. Monet struggled to complete these paintings after his return to France, where he re-worked many of the canvases in his Giverny studio, releasing them for sale over the course of several years. The exhibition Monet's Waterloo Bridge: Vision and Process brings together eight paintings from the famous London series. Scholarly essays and an in-depth technical study of the Memorial Art Gallery's Waterloo Bridge, Veiled Sun (1903) explore Monet's artistic vision as well as the process by which he struggled to achieve that vision. NANCY NORWOOD is Curator of European Art, Memorial Art Gallery, Rochester, New York.
