We consider (i) single-letter difference distortion criteria for discrete memoryless sources whose probability distributions belong to capacity classes and (ii) the mean- square error distortion criterion for stationary Gaussian sources whose spectral measures belong to capacity classes. Both block source codes and trellis source codes are considered. It is shown that there exists an ensemble of block source codes and an ensemble of trellis codes such that for all rates larger than a critical rate and all sources in the class the average distortion converges to any prescribed fidelity level exponentially with increasing block length or constraint length, respectively Besides the rate distortion function, the distortion exponent of the class is also evaluated.

Book excerpt: A probabilistic approach to the source encoding problem requires the specification of a fidelity criterion which measures the degradation of the source output produced by the encoding transformation. Historically, the fidelity criteria generated by difference-type distortion measures have received by far the widest acceptance, due in part to their analytical tractability. This paper introduces two new fidelity criteria for discrete-time sources. These are designated as the mean incoherence(MIC) and the mean log-coherence (MLC). Both criteria are functionals of the magnitude-squared coherence between the source output and its reproduction, and thus do not admit a recognizable time-domain distortion measure representation. Interesting features of these fidelity criteria are indicated, and comparisons are made with the classical mean-squared error (MSE) fidelity criterion. The rate-distortion functions for a stationary Gaussian source subject to constraints on either the MIC or MLC are derived, and the corresponding optimum encoder behavior is described. Finally, the applications where these new fidelity criteria may be advantageous over the MSE criterion are discussed. (Author).

Book excerpt: Lossless data compression is a facet of source coding and a well studied problem of information theory. Its goal is to find a shortest possible code that can be unambiguously recovered. Here, we focus on rigorous analysis of code redundancy for known sources. The redundancy rate problem determines by how much the actual code length exceeds the optimal code length. We present precise analyses of three types of lossless data compression schemes, namely fixed-to-variable (FV) length codes, variable-to-fixed (VF) length codes, and variable to- variable (VV) length codes. In particular, we investigate the average redundancy of Shannon, Huffman, Tunstall, Khodak and Boncelet codes. These codes have succinct representations as trees, either as coding or parsing trees, and we analyze here some of their parameters (e.g., the average path from the root to a leaf). Such trees are precisely analyzed by analytic methods, known also as analytic combinatorics, in which complex analysis plays decisive role. These tools include generating functions, Mellin transform, Fourier series, saddle point method, analytic poissonization and depoissonization, Tauberian theorems, and singularity analysis. The term analytic information theory has been coined to describe problems of information theory studied by analytic tools. This approach lies on the crossroad of information theory, analysis of algorithms, and combinatorics.
