Book excerpt: In the networked control of interconnected systems, the communication network is primarily used for the exchange of measurements amongst the control stations. Plug-and-play control extends the usage of this network towards the exchange of models with the aim to automatically design control stations at runtime. Therefore, every subsystem is equipped with a design agent that initially knows only the model of its subsystem. To design a control station by a design agent, first, a suitable model of the subsystem that interacts with other subsystems has to be set up. Second, local design conditions have to be found that guarantee the adherence of the global control aim. If the designed control station is finally plugged into the control equipment, the overall closed-loop system plays as desired. The focus of this thesis is to enable the design agent to accomplish the controller design. Therefore, three approaches are proposed which focus on the accuracy of the model that is used for the design with respect to the achievable overall closed-loop performance. The main result is a novel concept for the self-organised controller design by means of design agents. This concept is applied to achieve fault tolerance and to integrate new subsystems. The proposed methods are tested and evaluated through simulations and experiments on a thermofluid process and a multizone furnace.

Book excerpt: Stabilizability of an interconnected system with respect to LTI decentralized control law and also general (nonlinear and time-varying) control law is investigated in the literature, by introducing the notions of decentralized fixed mode (DFM) and quotient fixed mode (QFM). Since the existing methods aiming at identifying these fixed modes are ill-conditioned, two graph-theoretic approaches are proposed here to obtain the DFMs and QFMs of a system in a more efficient manner. In addition, it is asserted that the nonzero and distinct DFMs of a system can be eliminated by means of a proper sampled-data controller. On the other hand, decentralized overlapping control as a more advanced form of structurally constrained control systems is investigated thoroughly. An onto mapping between the decentralized control and the decentralized overlapping control is introduced, which makes the decentralized control design techniques applicable to the decentralized overlapping problem. A systematic method is proposed to check stabilizability of general proper (as opposed to strictly proper) structurally constrained controllers with respect to LTI and non-LTI systems. It is to be noted that the extension of the existing techniques to this general problem not only is non-trivial, but not feasible indeed. Besides, robust stability of the closed-loop system in the presence of polynomial uncertainties is also investigated and a necessary and sufficient condition in the form of sum-of-squares (SOS) is presented. It is to be noted that this problem has been investigated in the literature for the past ten years but prior to this work, only sufficient conditions existed for robust stability of this type of systems. The results presented in this treatise are applied to several benchmark examples, including formation flying of three UAVs, to demonstrate the efficacy of this work.

Book excerpt: Abstract: In this dissertation, the adaptive seeking control strategy for nonlinear systems is investigated to solve control problems like online optimization and system stabilization. The adaptive seeking control strategy developed includes the gradient-seeking control method and the adaptive seeking sliding mode control method. The gradient-seeking control algorithm is designed to solve online convex optimization problems in which it adaptively locates and tracks a priori unknown optimal set-point that extremizes/optimizes the value of a nonlinear performance index function. The gradient-seeking control is applicable to systems that involve a continuous and convex nonlinearity. The proposed gradient-seeking strategy is consistently simple in structure. It is also robust to unknown disturbances and modeling uncertainties while adaptively locating and tracking an optimal set-point online. Based on the same concept of gradient-seeking control strategy, a new sliding mode control method, namely adaptive seeking sliding mode control, is proposed in this dissertation to solve system stabilization problems for a class of nonlinear systems. While reserving the properties of the sliding mode control, like insensitivity to parameter variations and complete rejection of disturbances, the adaptive seeking sliding mode control offers a promising robust sliding mode control solution for real-life engineering applications with continuous control input. The proposed sliding mode control method applies a floating feedback control gain and it helps to relieve the chattering problem accompanying some sliding mode control systems in the presence of parasitic dynamics and continuous disturbances. This method is especially promising for control systems with limited actuation capabilities and bandwidth. The dissertation concludes with a summary of the current work and a discussion on possible extensions of the proposed control strategy in future work.
