Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Robert Motherwell was not just a great painter, he was a brilliant thinker. As the founding editor of The Documents of Twentieth-Century of Art, he decisively shaped our understanding of modernism. This new and expanded selection of Motherwell's criticism provides an essential guide to the art of the high modern period, both American and European."—Pepe Karmel, author of Picasso and the Invention of Cubism "In the past two decades Abstract Expressionism has become one of the most dynamic subjects in art history; sometimes the reading is so dense it is like swimming through peanut butter. But, cutting through to the essential questions that generated the movement, the writings of Robert Motherwell are a treasure. Written at the same time he was painting, Motherwell's texts make me feel like a witness to the philosophical curiosity that generated one of the most powerful art movements of the twentieth century."—Michael Auping, author of Abstract Expressionism: The Critical Developments “This book is essential reading for anyone thinking about the uneasy clash of modernism and postmodernism in postwar America; Motherwell’s writing played a decisive role and this volume is an admirably full account of it.”—Jonathan Fineberg, author of When We Were Young: New Perspectives on the Art of the Child

Book excerpt: Robert Motherwell (1915-91) came to abstraction not through painting, but through philosophy, poetry and art history. While studying at Stanford, he was introduced to modernism and symbolism; Mallarmé's dictum, "To paint, not the thing, but the effect it provides," would prove essential in Motherwell's work. Elegy to the Spanish Republic is perhaps the most literal example of this influence. Begun in 1948, the series, comprising some 150 canvases, was the artist's "funeral song for something once cared about" in abstract pictorial form. Exploring the inextricable links between poetry, politics, writing and painting revealed in the history of the series, this volume includes Harold Rosenberg's "A Bird for Every Bird," Federico García Lorca's "Llanto por Ignacio Sánchez Mejías," notes and writings by Motherwell on the Spanish Civil War, scholarly essays and rare archival material.

Book excerpt: The Abstract Expressionist artist Robert Motherwell (1915-1991) was best known as a painter, but he also created a remarkable body of works on paper. The drawings, prints, and collages in this book show a more intimate side of his visual sensibility; they reveal the very personal "handwriting" of the artist as he responded to the subtleties of paper, both as a medium and a material. Motherwell was in fact a most extraordinary draftsman, as this volume testifies. Reproduced in color and in a generous format are more than a hundred of the artist's finest works on paper. The book is published to accompany an exhibition at the Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Art Gallery at Columbia University - an exhibition that was conceived and developed in discussions with the artist during the final year of his life. For this celebration of Motherwell's creative legacy, David Rosand has gathered a distinguished group of contributors. Together, their essays on different aspects of Motherwell's work create a complex picture of a multifaceted artist.

Book excerpt: In Robert Motherwell: The Making of an American Giant, published to coincide with Motherwell's centenary, author Bernard Jacobson examines Motherwell's art in the context of 20th-century American culture. America's music and literature were indigenous triumphs, while its art was slowly learning to become American. Imitation metamorphosed into resistance, soon to be named Abstract Expressionism. A painter, teacher and theorist, Motherwell had a slower-burning career than most of his colleagues, many of whom died young. He was always the intellectual, an Apollonian among Dionysians, and was able to create a considerable body of work that is only now, 25 years after his death, beginning to be unraveled, understood and fully appreciated. This biography, interspersed with illustrations, is an accessible introduction to Motherwell's legacy.

Book excerpt: As a painter and as one interested in education in relation to painting and drawing, the writer has become personally interested in the problem of subject matter in art... Since there is controversy in regards to this tendency in painting, research directed toward the source of ideas involved in the work, it is felt, will help to make clear the intention of the artists. This research will deal with the attitudes of these artists toward their own work and their relation to tradition as they express it. --Robert Goodnough (1950). The absence of traditional subject matter was a primary issue for painters in mid-twentieth-century America whose imagery lacked representational references; it was also a problem for those struggling to understand modern art. Robert Goodnough (1917-2010), then a New York University graduate student and an artist deeply involved with these issues, responded to the situation in a 1950 research paper, Subject Matter of the Artist: An Analysis of Contemporary Subject Matter in Painting as Derived from Interviews with Those Artists Referred to as the Intrasubjectivists. Goodnough's paper constitutes the first scholarly work on the artists who became known as the Abstract Expressionists and includes interviews with William Baziotes, Willem de Kooning, Adolph Gottlieb, Robert Motherwell, Barnett Newman, Jackson Pollock, and Mark Rothko. This previously unpublished study is presented here for the first time alongside related writings by Goodnough.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than a decade, Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner devoted their lives to each other, serving in turn as muse, critic, companion, lover, friend and alter ego. Their romance was stormy - their raucous arguments are the stuff of legend - but their talents were prodigious. This book is packed with examples of the contributions both artists made to the world of modern art. Readers will learn how Pollock and Krasners artistry evolved and how they influenced each others success. Recent developments, such as a revealing biopic and the art worlds elevation of Pollock to the status of being the most expensive artist in the world, bring their portrait fully up-to-date. While the author acknowledges historys sensationalisation of their lives, it is the paintings themselves - revolutionary, innovative and daring - that tell the most compelling story.
