Book excerpt: The dancing pavilion, separated from the Casino itself by an arched passageway and affording another pretty view of the lake in the moonlight, was filled with young people when Alice entered. "It will be cool here, I think," suggested Dolly De Castro, leading the way for her guest. "The Hickories is by no means a gay place," she continued, seating herself beside Alice where they could see the dancers moving in and out of the long room. "And it isn't a club. There is just this Casino and the fields for golf and polo. It is a neighborhood affair--and really the quietest place of the kind in the Lake country. Too bad you could not have been here three weeks ago for the Kermess." "So Miss Venable said. They are great fun."

Golden-haired Aurora Kimberly possessed only one passion--to live a simple life on the lush island paradise her family had been given by the English Crown. Now, her treasure was about to be threatened...by Valerian Hawkesworth, Duke of Farminster, who came to claim the heiress promised to him in a marriage contract. And what sweet revenge would the duke demand when he learned that he had been deceived? Only a twist of fate and the power of an indomitable love could change the heart of a man scorned...

Book Synopsis Opdycke's Tigers in the Civil War by : Thomas Crowl
Download or read book Opdycke's Tigers in the Civil War written by Thomas Crowl and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2019-05-23 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organized in the fall of 1862, the 125th Ohio Volunteer Infantry was commanded by the aggressive and ambitious Colonel Emerson Opdycke, a citizen-soldier with no military experience who rose to brevet major general. Part of the Army of the Cumberland, the 125th first saw combat at Chickamauga. Charging into Dyer's cornfield to blunt a rebel breakthrough, the Buckeyes pressed forward and, despite heavy casualties, drove the enemy back, buying time for the fractured Union army to rally. Impressed by the heroic charge of an untested regiment, Union General Thomas Wood labeled them "Opdycke's Tigers." After losing a third of their men at Chickamauga, the 125th fought engagements across Tennessee and Georgia during 1864, and took part in the decisive battles at Franklin and Nashville. Drawing on both primary sources and recent scholarship, this is the first full-length history of the regiment in more than 120 years.
