Book excerpt: When the young Swedish-descended Alexandra Bergson inherits her father's farm in Nebraska, she must transform the land from a wind-swept prairie landscape into a thriving enterprise. She dedicates herself completely to the land—at the cost of great sacrifices. O Pioneers! [1913] is Willa Cather's great masterpiece about American pioneers, where the land is as important a character as the people who cultivate it. WILLA CATHER [1873-1947] was an American author. After studying at the University of Nebraska, she worked as a teacher and journalist. Cather's novels often focus on settlers in the USA with a particular emphasis on female pioneers. In 1923, she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for the novel One of Ours, and in 1943, she was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Book Synopsis Guerra Fantastica by : António Barrento
Download or read book Guerra Fantastica written by António Barrento and published by . This book was released on 2019-02-19 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with a series of military operations that occurred in Portugal in 1762 and 1763, during the Seven Years' War, and which have been largely dismissed by the historiography. They are collectively called the Guerra Fantastica, 'Fantastical War', given the fact that the military units of the countries involved carried out multiple movements while not engaging in any battle. This work begins with an introduction to the phenomenon of war as a whole, to the environment in Europe at the time, and to the military framework of the conflict. It then describes the events that led to the participation of Portugal in the Seven Years' War and the way in which the conflict in Portugal began. It continues with a presentation of the various forces involved. For this purpose, it analyses in detail the weakness of the Portuguese army, the military reinforcements that were obtained from England, and the arrival in Portugal of the Count of Lippe, whom the King of England had recommended to the King of Portugal to be the commander of the forces, given his recognized ability for the task. It proceeds with an account of the events of the war, starting with an analysis of the invasion of the North of Portugal by the Spanish army and its later withdrawal to Spain. It continues with a description of how the Spanish army, once strengthened by French units, again invaded Portuguese territory, and the events that occurred until its second withdrawal. Despite the numerical superiority of the Bourbon army, the difficulties of the terrain, the efficient command of the Count of Lippe, and the manoeuvres of the Anglo-Portuguese army prevented it from reaching victory and forced its return to Spain. The book is an important piece of research, based on archival material. It explores contemporary correspondence between the Court of Spain and the commanders of the force that invaded Portugal, which is available at the Archive of Simancas. It makes use, moreover, of the correspondence between the Secretary of State of Portugal, the Count of Oeiras, and the Count of Lippe, and between the latter and his subordinate commanders, which is extant at the Military Historical Archive of Lisbon. At the same time, this work is reader-friendly, integrating several notes and original documents that help clarify certain of its major points, as well as a list of the units that participated in the military operations.

Book Synopsis Northern Tars in Southern Waters by : Vladimir Bogdanovich Bronevskiy
Download or read book Northern Tars in Southern Waters written by Vladimir Bogdanovich Bronevskiy and published by From Reason to Revolution. This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Translated for the first time into English in their entirety, the memoirs of Vladimir Bronevskiy describe the actions and movements of Russian Admiral Dmitriy Senyavin's squadron and the infantry at his disposal in the Adriatic and Aegean Seas between the years of 1805 and 1810. The story moves from Kronstadt to Corfu, to the siege of Ragusa and battle at Mount Athos, to the chaotic reshuffling of alliances with the signing of the Treaty of Tilsit and the ill-fated dispersion of the fleet among the British, French, and Austrians. Straddling the Wars of the Third and Fourth Coalitions and the Russo-Turkish War, Senyavin carefully manoeuvred around multiple threats from all sides with limited resources and came through with minimal losses, though political circumstances ultimately robbed him of the laurels. Told from the perspective of a midshipman aboard the frigate Venus, but augmented and expanded with archival data and interviews with his comrades and acquaintances, Bronevskiy illuminated an often-overlooked theatre of war and sought to teach his readership about the myriad cultures and rich history of the region, transforming his personal journals into a comprehensive history of the campaign. His scope varies from personal interactions with civilians and tours of local landmarks to the diplomatic correspondence of general and admirals and the combat actions of whole squadrons and corps. Unabridged, illustrated with all the original engravings, featuring newly translated maps and annotated throughout with notes and corrections, Boland's translation brings Bronevskiy to a new, wider audience in a faithful but approachable presentation.

Book Synopsis The Art of Warfare in the Age of Marlborough by : David G. Chandler
Download or read book The Art of Warfare in the Age of Marlborough written by David G. Chandler and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This study has been deliberately restricted to an examination of the tactical organisation and handling of the European 'teeth arms' of the late seventeenth and the first half of the eighteenth centuries. That is to say, its four main sections deal with the Horse, the Foot, the Trains of Artillery, and the Engineer Services of the period, describing their representation, organization, equipment, training and tactical employment. The treatment is not restricted to the examination of a single army alone: most attention is devoted to the English and French forces, which serve as controls, but comparisons are drawn with Dutch, Swedish, Prussian, Austrian, Russian and Turkish practices on a more limited scale to demonstrate regional differences and peculiarities. Thus it is hoped that something of an overview of European military practice at the tactical level will emerge"--Introduction.
