Book excerpt: This volume contains Walter Scott's historical novel, "Rob Roy" (first published in 1817). Frank Osbaldistone, the narrator, is the son of an English merchant who embarks on a trip from the north of England to the Scottish Highlands in order to collect some money taken from his father. Set to the backdrop of the 1715 Jacobite Rising, this exciting and interesting novel will appeal to those with an interest in Scottish history. It is certainly not to be missed by fans and collectors of Scott's seminal work. Sir Walter Scott (1771 - 1832) was a Scottish historical novelist, poet, and playwright - considered to be the first truly international English-language author. Many vintage texts such as this are increasingly scarce and expensive, and it is with this in mind that we are republishing this book now, in an affordable, high-quality, modern edition. It comes complete with a specially commissioned biography of the author.

Book excerpt: Walter Scott's novel Rob Roy follows a young Englishman, Frank Osbaldistone, to Scotland, where he travels to retrieve a debt. The story is set during the 1715 Jacobite Rising, and Frank becomes embroiled in Jacobite politics when he falls in love. The novel realistically portrays the living conditions of Highland and Lowland Scotland at the time, comparing the natives to "savage" native Americans. Though the title character, famous outlaw Rob Roy MacGregor, does appear in the novel, it is not actually about him.

Book excerpt: This is the first time that Rob Roy's life has been written with a full range of sources. The picture that emerges is indeed striking, but not heroic. A man deeply wronged and oppressed, forced into outlawry, has to be modified by the clear evidence that he was only outlawed after undertaking a careful plan to swindle his creditors. With this book Scotland may lose a hero of the old-fashioned and unreal sort, but it possesses a Rob Roy whose life-story emerges as one that was dramatic and certainly more human. This radical revision of popular views on Rob Roy is based on much recently discovered material and is the first new biography for thirty years.

Book excerpt: The Rob Roy Kelly Wood Type Collection is a comprehensive collection of wood type manufactured and used for printing in nineteenth-century America. Comprising nearly 150 typefaces of various sizes and styles, it was amassed by noted design educator and historian Rob Roy Kelly starting in 1957 and is now held by the University of Texas. Although Kelly himself published a 1969 book on wood type and nineteenth-century typographic history, there has been little written about the creation of the wood type forms, the collection, or Kelly. In this book, David Shields rigorously updates and expands upon Kelly’s historical information about the types, clarifying the collection’s exact composition and providing a better understanding of the stylistic development of wood type forms during the nineteenth century. Using rich materials from the period, Shields provides a stunning visual context that complements the textual history of each typeface. He also highlights the non-typographic material in the collection—such as borders, rules, ornaments, and image cuts—that have not been previously examined. Featuring over 300 color illustrations, this written history and catalog is bound to spark renewed interest in the collection and its broader typographic period.

Book excerpt: Rob Roy by Sir Walter Scott is a historical fiction novel that includes a character based on Robert Roy MacGregor. It is part of the Waverley novels, a series of Scott's books that focused on Scottish history. The setting of Rob Roy is Scotland just before the Jacobite rising of 1715. The narrator and main character of the story is the Englishman Frank Osbaldistone. Frank has a fight with his father because he does not want to join the family business. Because of the fight, Frank's father sends him to stay with his uncle, Sir Hildebrand Osbaldistone, who is a Jacobite. On his way to his uncle's house, Frank bumps into Rob Roy, the outlaw, who is disguised as a man named Mr. Campbell. Frank also meets Diana Vernon, Sir Hildebrand Osbaldistone's niece, and eventually falls in love with her. Rashleigh, Sir Hildebrand Osbaldistone's son, steals financial documents essential to the Osbaldistone family and escapes to Scotland. Frank decides to get help from Rob Roy in order to restore his father's honor. The Jacobite risings break out and in the battle Rashleigh tries to kill Frank, but Rob Roy kills Rashleigh before he can do so. In the end, Frank inherits the Osbaldistone estate and marries Diana. While Rob Roy is a mysterious and minor character in the book, he is instrumental in the final fight against Rashleigh. More than anything, Rob Roy and the Jacobite risings set the stage for the other characters to develop in this historical fiction novel.

Book excerpt: Of all the writers in the 19th century, the preeminent one was Sir Walter Scott, whose works were so beloved that he had an international fan base well before he died. The Scotsman is still considered one of the greatest writers of the English language, and his most famous and popular title is Ivanhoe, but he is also remembered for other works like The Lady of the Lake, Waverley, and The Bride of Lammermoor.

Book excerpt: When the Editor of the following volumes published, about two years since, the work called the "Antiquary," he announced that he was, for the last time, intruding upon the public in his present capacity. He might shelter himself under the plea that every anonymous writer is, like the celebrated Junius, only a phantom, and that therefore, although an apparition, of a more benign, as well as much meaner description, he cannot be bound to plead to a charge of inconsistency.
