Book Synopsis Infrastructure of America's Tunnels by : Marcia Amidon Lusted
Download or read book Infrastructure of America's Tunnels written by Marcia Amidon Lusted and published by Mitchell Lane. This book was released on 2019-07-04 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Infrastructure is something that we use every day, like roads, bridges, and tunnels, but probably never think too much about. However, in the United States, many parts of the countrys infrastructure are old, falling apart, and desperately need repair and upgrading. Tunnels especially are vital to transportation, and extremely dangerous when they collapse. This book explores eight tunnels of different types that are lifelines for transportation in the US, but are now at risk. Whether its Bostons Big Dig, the twin railroad tunnels under the Hudson River, Californias Hetch Hetchey water system, or a rail tunnel in Baltimore thats more than 100 years old, these tunnels are very important to the entire country. Without emergency repairs and expansion, these tunnels could fail, with catastrophic results.

Book excerpt: The guide explains how executives can incorporate and communicate capital funding needs for tunnel improvements as part of their overall transportation system funding. Additionally, the guide delivers a process for prioritizing needs, using an overall measure of effectiveness that is calculated using a risk-based urgency score, and developing capital funding and staffing programs to accomplish tunnel preservation goals. The guide also serves as a training tool for new personnel. The contractors final report is available from the project description page.

Book Synopsis Safety in Tunnels by : Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. Road Transport and Intermodal Linkages Research Programme
Download or read book Safety in Tunnels written by Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. Road Transport and Intermodal Linkages Research Programme and published by OECD. This book was released on 2001-10-26 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A serious incident involving dangerous goods in a tunnel can be extremely costly in terms of loss of human lives, environmental degradation, tunnel damage and transport disruption. On the other hand, needlessly banning dangerous goods from tunnels may create unjustified economic costs. Moreover, such a ban might force operators to use more dangerous routes, such as densely populated areas, and thus increase the overall risk. This report proposes regulations and procedures to increase the safety and efficiency of transporting dangerous goods through road tunnels. It introduces two models, developed as part of the study: the first quantifies the risks involved in transporting dangerous goods through tunnels and by road; the second, a decision-support model, assists in the determination of the restrictions which need to be applied to the transport of dangerous goods through tunnels. Finally, measures to reduce both the risks and the consequences of incidents in tunnels are examined in detail.
Download or read book Road Tunnels written by Fabio Borghetti and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-03-27 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book illustrates a new quantitative risk analysis model for road tunnels that is capable of evaluating the role of infrastructure measures, equipment and management procedures as prescribed by EU Directive 2004/54/EC. The risk assessment draws on the typical F-N curves of societal risk, evaluated with the help of event tree analysis, vehicle queue formation dynamics, and users’ egress and tenability models. In addition, the model considers the reliability of the safety measures. The work provides essential guidance on the following aspects: how a quantitative model can be implemented to evaluate risk in road tunnels; how to build an event tree for the accident scenarios considered; how to simulate the vehicle queue formation; how to simulate the evolution of accident scenarios; and how to simulate the users’ egress. Given its scope and depth of coverage, the book will be of interest to all engineers whose work involves fire protection and safety in tunnels, all persons engaged in safety and transport engineering or risk analysis for road tunnels, as well as public and private bodies involved in the application of Directive 2004/54/EC.
