Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chicago River Bridges presents the untold history and development of Chicago's iconic bridges, from the first wood footbridge built by a tavern owner in 1832 to the fantastic marvels of steel, concrete, and machinery of today. It is the story of Chicago as seen through its bridges, for it has been the bridges that proved critical in connecting and reconnecting the people, industry, and neighborhoods of a city that is constantly remaking itself. In this book, author Patrick T. McBriarty shows how generations of Chicagoans built (and rebuilt) the thriving city trisected by the Chicago River and linked by its many crossings. The first comprehensive guidebook of these remarkable features of Chicago's urban landscape, Chicago River Bridges chronicles more than 175 bridges spanning 55 locations along the Main Channel, South Branch, and North Branch of the Chicago River. With new full-color photography of the existing bridges by Kevin Keeley and Laura Banick and more than one hundred black and white images of bridges past, the book unearths the rich history of Chicago's downtown bridges from the Michigan Avenue Bridge to the often forgotten bridges that once connected thoroughfares such as Rush, Erie, Taylor, and Polk Streets. Throughout, McBriarty delivers new research into the bridges' architectural designs, engineering innovations, and their impact on Chicagoans' daily lives. Describing the structure and mechanics of various kinds of moveable bridges (including vertical-lift, Scherer rolling lift, and Strauss heel trunnion mechanisms) in a manner that is accessible and still satisfying to the bridge aficionado, he explains how the dominance of the "Chicago-style" bascule drawbridge influenced the style and mechanics of bridges worldwide. Interspersed throughout are the human dramas that played out on and around the bridges, such as the floods of 1849 and 1992, the cattle crossing collapse of the Rush Street Bridge, or Vincent "The Schemer" Drucci's Michigan Avenue Bridge jump. A confluence of Chicago history, urban design, and engineering lore, Chicago River Bridges illustrates Chicago's significant contribution to drawbridge innovation and the city's emergence as the drawbridge capital of the world. It is perfect for any reader interested in learning more about the history and function of Chicago's many and varied bridges. The introduction won The Henry N. Barkhausen Award for original research in the field of Great Lakes maritime history sponsored by the Association for Great Lakes Maritime History.

Book excerpt: The Committee examined a number of case studies during its inquiry including the Mersey Gateway Project, the Tyne Tunnels and proposals for new crossings in East London and the Lower Thames. The Transport Committee says a short-term approach to planning key infrastructure projects has left many estuary areas in the UK with inadequate transport capacity and poor connectivity: "A lack of cross-river capacity limits local and national economic growth so we call upon the Government to take a far more long-term approach when planning new bridges and tunnels. The Government must rectify that weakness as soon as possible. Important infrastructure projects, such as the Mersey Gateway Bridge, have the potential to generate economic growth by linking workers to jobs and consumers to retailers." The Committee welcomes proposals to build a package of new river crossings in east London and believes these developments are "long overdue."

Book excerpt: Crossing a river against a defending enemy force is a difficult and complex task for any army. History has shown that preparation is necessary to avoid disasters during this type of operation. In 2003, the Third Infantry Division crossed the Euphrates River because it was prepared for this task and possessed the necessary equipment. Since then, no other divisions or corps has executed river crossing operations. While the United States Army focused on counterinsurgency operations during the last twelve years, it underwent significant changes to adapt to meet the adversities on the battlefield. It transformed its war-fighting organizations, trained its corps and divisions with computer simulations, and relegated field training to brigade and below units. In addition, its current doctrine now refers to river crossings as the deliberate wet gap crossing. Because of these changes, many questions arose as to the present corps and divisions’ preparedness to do large-scale operations, to include its ability to plan, prepare, and execute the deliberate wet gap crossing. If called today, could these organizations conduct this complex operation? Examining river crossings in Europe during the Second World War was appropriate for insight into how the previous generation of corps and divisions prepared and executed such a complex task. After analyzing how these units were able to cross the numerous waterways in Europe, the present Army should consider reassessing its doctrine, training, and organization and equipment to prepare its units for future deliberate wet gap crossings.

Written by an author with his own extraordinary middle passage, the book provides practical insights for men, while offering women an invaluable window into men's souls." -Allan Chinen, author of Beyond the Hero: Classic Stories of Men in Search of Soul"Lively and unembarrassed, written with great psychological acumen, Crossing the Soul's River is a major contribution to our understanding of men at midlife. This is the conversation men need to have with another man when their familiar old assumptions and priorities no longer make sense. Give it to a man you really care about. Give it to a woman who wants to know men at the core." -Stephen Bank, coauthor of The Sibling Bond"Crossing the Soul's River is one of the second generation of men's books that are trying to chart concrete steps men can take to do the work we need to do to become more self-actualized and, therefore, more responsible partners, citizens, and churchmen . . . [Roberts's] articulation of men's needs for the wisdom of Sophia is the clearest I have ever read."-Stephen Boyd, author of The Men We Long to Be: Beyond Lonely Warriors and Desperate Lovers "William O. Roberts's compelling book puts the male midlife crisis into its deepest context-the growth of ourselves as spiritual beings. In so doing it moves well beyond treatments which focus solely on the psychological dimension of this process-though Roberts details these too with a sharp, insightful eye honed by his own personal experience. Most helpful is his detailing of various rites of passage designed to help men navigate through this difficult time. In this the book is of practical as well as intellectual use. I found the book deeply insightful and altogether illuminating."-Brian Fay, author of Contemporary Philosophy of Social Science: A Multicultural Approach

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pipeline Crossings (Manuals and Reports on Engineering Practice #89) was prepared by the Task Committee on Pipeline Crossings, Pipeline Crossings Technical Committee, Pipeline Division of the American Society of Civil Engineers. The purpose of this manual is to present common approaches for the design of crossing installations through the use of examples of standard practice as they exist in industry today. While the emphasis is on the pipeline crossing techniques of highways, railroads, and waterways, they can also be applied to cable and conduit crossings. The manual is divided into four major sections. First, general concepts are presented, including crossing environments, permits, and a description of the various types of crossings. The second section discusses the design issues while the different construction methods are explored in detail in the next section. Finally, the fourth section features a glossary of terms and a bibliography of resource materials. For new engineers, this manual may supplement what they were taught in school about pipeline design and construction. For more experienced engineers, it will hopefully provide useful options and guidelines from current practice.
