Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the buying organizations' perspective on risks, relationships and success factors for accomplishing a successful IT Outsourcing (ITO). Today’s landscape in ITO is complex and these perspectives are important in ITO and therefore there is still a need for it to be further explored. Furthermore the studies concerned the risks, relationships and success factors in ITO need to be extended in more large companies from different countries to better understand how we could improve the ITO in these companies. In order to address this issue the authors of this book have performed different studies that span about 10 years concerning the risks, relationships and success factors in ITO in large companies in Sweden. The authors have focused on both theoretical and practical aspects concerning risks, relationships and success factors in ITO and they have used transaction cost theory, agency theory and core competency theory as main theories to support their research. The data concerning this study has been collected at two different times during the last 10 years with about five years' difference between them. In this way the performed research has enabled a comparison of the data collected on two different periods in time including of the related changes. The book will help researchers in ITO as well as practitioners like ITO decision makers in large companies to understand how to mitigate the ITO risks, improve their ITO relationships and identify the ITO success factors.

Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2010 in the subject Business economics - Information Management, grade: 2,3, University of Göttingen, language: English, abstract: The enduring impact of the financial crisis forces more and more businesses to concentrate on their key competences because of dwindling sales. Nevertheless shareholders demand a reasonable reward for their investment in the business, customers expect an equal quality level and staff won’t accept salary cuts. One possible solution to satisfy at least the shareholders and customers is offshore outsourcing of IT/IS-services. Information technology (IT) and information systems (IS) are very complex topics in many cases and cause high costs. During the recession, cost cutting is often the number one strategy to keep the business running and beyond the break-even.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2021 in the subject Computer Science - Commercial Information Technology, grade: 2,0, University of Applied Sciences Bonn, language: English, abstract: This paper takes a closer look at aspects surrounding the importance and application of IT outsourcing and aims to provide a sound understanding of the term as well as the forms of outsourcing strategy in today’s IT-based or IT-driven industries. Since outsourcing is a subject that is not necessarily only associated with advantages, a closer look at the disadvantages of outsourcing will also be taken in the course of this paper. Outsourcing has become increasingly popular as a technique to reduce costs and to access a wider range of technical expertise (in-house competencies versus outsourcing noncore competencies). Especially concerning the second example, outsourcing has become a standard method of project and labour management if a firm decides to migrate to a newer technology. In the IT industry, companies may outsource system development, system operations, help desk, systems, databases, and application administration, as well as a desktop and network support. Furthermore, businesses may use outsourcing to obtain application service provision or business process outsourcing. Considering an IT activity a commodity, there is little benefit to doing it internally. Payroll processing, for instance, is often considered a commodity IT activity. In these cases, focused vendors are likely capable of providing the service at a higher level of quality and/or at a lower cost. By taking advantage of economies of scale that other organizations have, a business that specializes in the same field can become more cost-effective. With respect to the given advantages, outsourcing of IT resources and services is proving to be an increasing trend on the global market. Companies such as cloud providers specializing in many manifestations of IT outsourcing (Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), Software as a Service (SaaS)) show a growing turnover, which is expected to increase further in the forecast beyond 2021.

Book excerpt: In the literature, outsourcing projects are mainly examined for setting fundamental theories related with the success criteria in Information Systems (IS) outsourcing. When we further investigate the projects stated in the literature, we can see that they are mainly from developed countries, usually focusing on one side (success or failure) and reflecting an example from either single or multi- vendor relationship (not both). In this book, you will find a comprehensive literature review for the analysis of main success factors in IS outsourcing in all over the world but more importantly the analysis of an interesting case study from a developing country, Turkey. The case is remarkable for all professionals who want to analyze both the success and failure factors of IS outsourcing since after a bright start, the project was almost terminated but later it started again and finished successfully. In addition to this characteristic, the study also gives us an opportunity to investigate both multi- vendor and single vendor outsourcing relationships due to the change in the number of vendors during the life of the project.

Book excerpt: Successful post-contract relationships determine whether an IT outsourcing project is fully successful, partially successful or a failure. The purpose of this study is to further the understanding of IT outsourcing relationships in the post-contract phase. This study adopts a social exchange theory perspective and examines the impact of trust in IT outsourcing vendor, various modes of trust and trustworthiness factors, perceptions of risk, perceptions of strategic salience and service quality on relationship quality and outsourcing success. Perceptions of trustworthiness of the vendor, and the various bases of IT outsourcing decision making such as institution-based trust, transference-based trust, calculative-based trust and the past experiences with the vendor and their impact on the trust in vendor are examined in an IT outsourcing context.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sound contracts are an obvious necessity for an IT outsourcing relationship, but they are by far not the only prerequisite for achieving a truly successful relationship. Companies that establish successful outsourcing implement active relationship management in order to reach a good relationship quality. However, relationship quality as a central concept in IT outsourcing governance has not been thoroughly analyzed and applied yet, neither in scientific literature nor in practice. Stefan Blumenberg addresses these shortcomings and shows how relationship quality can be measured as a seven-dimensional construct and which are the crucial factors that are required to achieve high-quality relationships. Based on a case study series with 18 banks and their respective IT service providers in Germany, Blumenberg demonstrates that knowledge transfer mechanisms strongly influence relationship quality. Banks with clearly defined contact structures (e.g. retained organizations) and knowledge transfer mechanisms for exchanging implicit and explicit knowledge (e.g. trainings, job rotation) exhibit a good relationship quality and, as a result, achieve a successful outsourcing relationship.
