Book excerpt: Due to its environmental attributes, Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) as a clean fossil fuel source of energy has witnessed a steady increase in demand worldwide over the last decade. This growing role of LNG among competing energy sources has raised concerns over the safety and security of the LNG chain of production, transport and distribution. LNG ports and marine terminals, being strategically located at the midstream of the LNG Supply Chain are further exposed to safety and security risks and represent credible targets for international terrorism. Ensuring robust and resilient LNG SCs requires first, adequate management of safety and security risks in LNG ports and marine terminals. While each discipline of risk has received significant attention both in theory and practice, less attention was given to the management of interfaces and shared impacts among LNG Ports safety and security risks which led to the existence of gaps in the risk management systems of LNG ports and may represent a major source of risk and disruption to LNG ports. This book addresses such gaps which are poorly addressed in the current literature and proposes a holistic and integrated approach.

Book excerpt: Port Cybersecurity: Securing Critical Information Infrastructures and Supply Chains examines a paradigm shift in the way ports assess cyber risks and vulnerabilities, as well as relevant risk management methodologies, by focusing on initiatives and efforts that attempt to deal with the risks and vulnerabilities of port Critical Information Infrastructures (CII) ecosystems. Modern commercial shipping ports are highly dependent on the operation of complex, dynamic ICT systems and ICT-based maritime supply chains, making these central points in the maritime supply chain vulnerable to cybersecurity threats. Identifies barriers and gaps in existing port and supply chain security standards, policies, legislation and regulatory frameworks Identifies port threat scenarios and analyzes cascading effects in their supply chains Analyzes risk assessment methodologies and tools, identifying their open problems when applied to a port’s CIIs

Book excerpt: Today’s society is completely dependent on critical networks such as water supply, sewage, electricity, ICT and transportation. Risk and vulnerability analyses are needed to grasp the impact of threats and hazards. However, these become quite complex as there are strong interdependencies both within and between infrastructure systems. Risk and Interdependencies in Critical Infrastructures: A guideline for analysis provides methods for analyzing risks and interdependencies of critical infrastructures. A number of analysis approaches are described and are adapted to each of these infrastructures. Various approaches are also revised, and all are supported by several examples and illustrations. Particular emphasis is given to the analysis of various interdependencies that often exist between the infrastructures. Risk and Interdependencies in Critical Infrastructures: A guideline for analysis provides a good tool to identify the hazards that are threatening your infrastructures, and will enhance the understanding on how these threats can propagate throughout the system and also affect other infrastructures, thereby identifying useful risk reducing measures. It is essential reading for municipalities and infrastructure owners that are obliged to know about and prepare for the risks and vulnerabilities of the critical infrastructures for which they are responsible.

Book excerpt: Natural gas is estimated to be the fastest growing component of world primary energy consumption. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply chain is a way of transporting natural gas over seas, by following a procedure of gas liquefaction, transportation in specialized tankers and regasification. During the last decade the LNG market changed substantial with the emergence of a short-term market. Analysis was performed examining the needs, the conditions and the risks of this change. The implications of the short-term market were investigated and an assessment was made regarding the future of a global LNG market. Certain risk management approaches were introduced and the implications of cost reduction in the LNG supply chain were examined. A computer model was created to investigate the profitability, on behalf of the shipowner, of three short-term trading routes. The future liquefaction and regasification capacity were presented, along with the future growth of the LNG fleet. Finally, a forecast for the future level of the LNG short-term trade was conducted.

Book excerpt: This book aims to highlight the interrelations between maritime ports, supply chains and logistics. Inland corridors could be defined as major arteries for inland transportation from and to the maritime port. They link together one or several ports located on the maritime range with one or several major inland metropolitan areas. The efficiency of international supply chains depends not only on the smooth operations in the port but also on the efficiency of inland distribution in terms of cost, reliability, added value services for the goods, safety and finally the environment. With contributions from international experts, the book offers a transversal perspective on logistics corridor development using case studies on the Seine Axis, among others. Organized into four key sections, the book highlights the interrelations between ports and corridors using both empirical and theoretical research from various disciplines, including engineering as well as human and social sciences. Maritime Ports,Supply Chains and Logistics Corridors will be directly relevant to a wide variety of scholars and postgraduate researchers in the fields of transport studies and management, maritime logistics, supply chain management and international logistics as well as industrial engineering, geography, economics and political science.

Book excerpt: This report on Removing Barriers to the Use of Natural Gas as Maritime Transportation Fuel is another step in our exploration of the catalytic role of natural gas in attaining the Sustainable Development Goals, and in particular Goal 7 - to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all. The report demonstrates the business case for using LNG as a fuel in maritime transport, for both LNG tankers and - increasingly since 2000 - other ships. Currently, there are over 300 ships powered by LNG. This is a positive development in view of the significant environmental benefits of LNG compared to heavy fuel oil and diesel both of which dominate today's market for international shipping bunkers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Risk is of fundamental importance in this era of the global economy. Supply chains must into account the uncertainty of demand. Moreover, the risk of uncertain demand can cut two ways: (1) there is the risk that unexpected demand will not be met on time, and the reverse problem (2) the risk that demand is over estimated and excessive inventory costs are incurred. There are other risks in unreliable vendors, delayed shipments, natural disasters, etc. In short, there are a host of strategic, tactical and operational risks to business supply chains. Supply Chain Risk: A Handbook of Assessment, Management, and Performance will focus on how to assess, evaluate, and control these various risks.
