Book excerpt: The CEAA, 2012 provides the framework for the federal EA process, with the CEA Agency as the main regulator for intraprovincial pipelines and related facilities, and the NEB as the regulator for pipelines that cross provincial and international boundaries (CEAA 2016e). [...] For 17 out of the 18 reviewed projects, the regulatory authorities have been of the view that no significant adverse effects on the Aboriginal interests will occur as a result of the proposed projects, with the implementation of impacts and benefits, and other agreements established by the proponents with Indigenous Groups to address Aboriginal interests in relation to the proposed projects. [...] Applications under the NEBA include the construction and operation of international and interprovincial pipelines in Canada, along with related facilities and activities, or modifying or abandoning existing facilities; the export of natural gas liquids, and the export and import of natural gas (NEBA, 1985, last amended 2016). [...] Research Objectives and Methodology The main objective of this report is to identify the key environmental and Indigenous Peoples issues facing development of the natural gas and LNG industry in British Columbia, and provide suggestions on policies to mitigate, manage and monitor the issues effectively. [...] A discussion of existing and proposed natural gas and LNG projects within the region is fundamental to the analysis of the current state of this industry in British Columbia.

This requires new paths for oil supply to its users, which can be potential hazardous sources for individuals and the environment. Risk Analysis for Prevention of Hazardous Situations in Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering explains the potential hazards of petroleum engineering activities, emphasizing risk assessments in drilling, completion, and production, and the gathering, transportation, and storage of hydrocarbons. Designed to aid in decision-making processes for environmental protection, this book is a useful guide for engineers, technicians, and other professionals in the petroleum industry interested in risk analysis for preventing hazardous situations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: British Columbia's natural gas industry is currently facing competitive pressures from other gas-producing jurisdictions in North America. The emergence of shale gas developments has resulted in natural gas prices falling dramatically. Nonetheless, British Columbia is positioned to take advantage of growing markets in Asia that have considerably higher prices than in North America through the export of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in carrier ships. This paper aims to assess the economic viability of an LNG industry in British Columbia by analyzing world LNG prices and trade, market development, and costs through a Monte Carlo risk assessment.

Book excerpt: In the latter half of the twentieth century, legions of industrial pioneers came to northwestern British Columbia with grand plans for mines, dams, and energy-development schemes. Yet many of their projects failed to materialize or were abandoned midstream. Unbuilt Environments reveals that these lapsed resource projects had lasting effects on the natural and human environment. Drawing on a range of case studies to analyze the social and environmental impacts of unfinished projects, Jonathan Peyton considers development failure a productive concept for northwestern Canada. He looks at a closed asbestos mine, an abandoned rail grade, an imagined series of hydroelectric installations, a failed LNG export facility, and a transmission line – and finds that these unrealized developments continue to shape contemporary resource conflicts.
