Book excerpt: *This Book is annotated (it contains a detailed biography of the author). *An active Table of Contents has been added by the publisher for a better customer experience. *This book has been checked and corrected for spelling errors."Risen from the Ranks" contains the further history of Harry Walton, who was first introduced to the public in the pages of "Bound to Rise." Those who are interested in learning how far he made good the promise of his boyhood, may here find their curiosity gratified. For the benefit of those who may only read the present volume, a synopsis of Harry's previous life is given in the first chapter. In describing Harry's rise from the ranks I have studiously avoided the extraordinary incidents and pieces of good luck, which the story writer has always at command, being desirous of presenting my hero's career as one which may be imitated by the thousands of boys similarly placed, who, like him, are anxious to rise from the ranks. It is my hope that this story, suggested in part by the career of an eminent American editor, may afford encouragement to such boys, and teach them that "where there is a will there is always a way."

This book was released on 2016-11-28 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In all of the dusty volumes of Civil War memoirs that no one reads anymore, once in a while we come across one such as this. Written by a man with literary aspirations from a regiment of like-minded soldiers, Albert Marshall’s use of the pen produced more eloquence than did that of many of his contemporaries. He left one of the most compelling accounts of the siege of Vicksburg from a private soldier's point of view. He also wrote of service in Texas, which is rare among Civil War memoirs. Eloquent, funny, poignant, and immensely satisfying, Marshall's memoir from his journal is one of the best of the genre. Every memoir of the American Civil War provides us with another view of the catastrophe that changed the country forever. If you want to understand Grant as he appeared to those closest to him, read this masterful first-hand account of Horace Porter's time on Grant's staff during the American Civil War. There is no more intimate and appealing portrait of the great general than that drawn by Porter. A keen observer of all around him and a great admirer of Grant to his dying day, Porter brings Grant to life in struggle and victory. Here we get fully dimensional anecdotes of Grant's humor, poise, anger (rare), and his thoughts on a variety of subjects from swearing to lying to naughty jokes to military tactics and strategy. In addition, Porter provides wonderful stories of the other famous men among whom he served, including William Tecumseh Sherman, Philip H. Sheridan, George Gordon Meade, George Thomas, and many, many others. Long considered one of the most important classics of Civil War literature, this is a book you are assured to read more than once. This book was released on 2013-11-15 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Double: A Petersburg Poem is a novella written by Fyodor Dostoevsky. The novella was first published in 1846. The Double deals with the internal psychological struggle of its main character, Yakov Petrovich Golyadkin. The Double is the most Gogolesque of Dostoevsky's works; its subtitle "A Petersburg Poem" echoes that of Gogol's Dead Souls. Vladimir Nabokov called it a parody of "The Overcoat". The story is told in great detail with a style intensely saturated by phonetic and rhythmical expressiveness. The novella centers on a government clerk who goes mad, obsessed by the idea that a fellow clerk has usurped his identity. D.S. Mirsky characterized the story as a "painful, almost intolerable reading". With a biography about the life and times of Fyodor Dostoyevsky.

Book excerpt: Notes from Underground (also translated in English as Notes from the Underground or Letters from the Underworld, though "Notes from Underground" is the most literal translation) is an 1864 short novel by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. The Notes is considered by many to be the first existentialist novel. It presents itself as an excerpt from the rambling memoirs of a bitter, isolated, unnamed narrator (generally referred to by critics as the Underground Man) who is a retired civil servant living in St. Petersburg. The first part of the story is told in monologue form, or the underground man's diary, and attacks emerging Western philosophy, especially Nikolay Chernyshevsky's What Is to Be Done?.

He was under such pressure to pay off the debts that he dictated to the book to a shorthand student in less than a month. The shorthand student became his second wife. The story is told in the first person; the narrator is Alexei Ivanovich, a tutor for the family of a Russian general. They are staying at a resort in Germany. Alexei is in love with the generals stepdaughter, Polina. After he swears his undying love for her, and offers to do anything she wishes, Polina asks him to go to a casino and place a bet for her. Unbeknownst to Alexei, Polina's stepfather is in dire financial straits. He finally agrees and ends up winning at the roulette table. This was Alexei's first experience with gambling.

The story opens with the narrator telling the purportedly true tale of his friend Ivan Matveich, who was swallowed alive by a crocodile. The narrator, Ivan Matveich, and his wife Elena Ivanovna had all gone to the Arcade to see a crocodile that was put on display by a German gentleman. After teasing the crocodile, Ivan Matveich was swallowed alive. He found the inside of the crocodile to be quite elastic and benign, and despite pleas from Elena Ivanovna to cut open the crocodile the German would not cooperate. Ivan Matveich urged his friend to arrange for the crocodile to be paid for before it was cut open, but the crocodile was so expensive that an agreement could not be reached. Elena Ivanovna eventually divorced Ivan Matveich, and he carried on his work as a civil servant as best he could from inside the crocodile.
