Book excerpt: Caledonia High School has the longest current winning streak in the nation, but it wasn't always that way. Learn how a change in football culture transformed a team, school, and community. The book, Rise of the Warriors, follows the journey of culture changes that occurred in the Caledonia Warriors football program from the 1980s until present day. A positive shift in the program culture transformed a small, southeastern Minnesota community. This high school football team has won 5 consecutive state championships with a 68-game winning streak. But it's more than that. Over time, the Caledonia football program has developed high-caliber qualities that are present in all great teams, which has translated to success on-and-off of the field. Two United States Navy SEALs, a pair of NFL football players, and two championship prep high school coaches played football for Caledonia High School. Dozens of other former athletes are difference-makers in their respective fields and in life. This book gives one-of-a-kind insight from alumni and others who have witnessed the transformational coaching of current Caledonia head football coach, Carl Fruechte. Rise of the Warriors provides a powerful, thought-provoking perspective about how teams can win not only on the field but also in business and in life with practical advice. Whether you are a football coach, a football fan, a business leader, or a parent- the principles of this book can be applied to any area of your life. The first part of this book is a history of the Caledonia football program and the culture change that occurred. The program went from winning one playoff game in 15 years to the longest current winning streak in the nation and 10 state titles in the last 14 years. Part two of the book focuses on attributes that are present in all great teams, but Mark Esch specifically relates these attributes to Caledonia football. However, these attributes can be applied to any area of life. About the author: Mark Esch is a 1995 graduate of Caledonia High School. He received his Bachelor of Science in Health and Physical Education with a coaching emphasis from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Mark received his master's degree from the University of South Dakota in Exercise Science. He has coached football for 18 years, including 11 seasons as head football coach at Mankato West High School in Minnesota. The West football program won two state championships during his tenure. Mark, his wife, and their three children live in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking history of how American police forces have been militarized is now revised and updated. Newly added material brings the story through 2020, including analysis of the Ferguson protests, the Obama and Trump administrations, and the George Floyd protests. The last days of colonialism taught America’s revolutionaries that soldiers in the streets bring conflict and tyranny. As a result, our country has generally worked to keep the military out of law enforcement. But over the last two centuries, America’s cops have increasingly come to resemble ground troops. The consequences have been dire: the home is no longer a place of sanctuary, the Fourth Amendment has been gutted, and police today have been conditioned to see the citizens they serve as enemies. In Rise of the Warrior Cop, Balko shows how politicians’ ill-considered policies and relentless declarations of war against vague enemies like crime, drugs, and terror have blurred the distinction between cop and soldier. His fascinating, frightening narrative that spans from America’s earliest days through today shows how a creeping battlefield mentality has isolated and alienated American police officers and put them on a collision course with the values of a free society.

Book excerpt: The #1 national bestseller and inside story of Steph Curry, the greatest shooter basketball has ever seen. Golden is the first book to provide an all-access look at Steph Curry and the team that has fueled Dub Nation—by longtime Warriors beat reporter and Bay Area News Group sports columnist Marcus Thompson, the go-to expert on all things Golden State. A lifelong Warriors fan turned insider Thompson is uniquely qualified to tell the definitive story of a singular talent, pulling back the curtain on the crazy work ethic and on-court intensity that make Curry great—and the emphasis on family and faith that keeps him grounded. Combining the competitive grit and fun-loving spirit of his mother with the mild demeanor, easy charm, and sharp shooting of his father, former NBA player Dell Curry, Steph Curry derives support and strength from his close-knit kin and his commitment to Christianity. This hard-working, wholesome image however is both a blessing and curse in a League of big personalities. Thompson unravels the complicated underpinnings of the Steph Curry hate with a nuanced analysis of how class and complexion come into play when a child with an NBA pedigree becomes the face of a sport traditionally honed on inner-city black top and dominated by the less privileged. With unprecedented access, Thompson draws from exclusive interviews with Steph Curry, his family, his teammates, Coach Steve Kerr, and the Warriors owners to bring readers inside the locker room and courtside with this remarkable athlete and man.

Chasing their third consecutive championship, they have assembled an incredible wealth of athletic talent, lead the league in merchandise sales, and are planning to move into a glitzy new stadium next season. Their owner, Joe Lacob, regularly hosts the top CEOs and influencers of Silicon Valley in his box, fashioning himself into one of the most powerful men in the world. Yet inside the organization, there is considerably more strife. In this breakthrough work of reportage, star NBA reporter Ethan Sherwood Strauss investigates the team's culture, its financial ambitions and struggles, and the toll that being a super-team can take. In so doing, he not only rewrites the story of the Warriors, but reveals how the Darwinian business of NBA basketball really works. Reconstructing the deals that lured Steph Curry away from Nike and Kevin Durant away from Oklahoma City, Strauss shows how the smallest mistakes can define success or failure for years. And, as he looks ahead to the 2020 season, Strauss ponders whether this organization can survive its own ambitions"--

This book will help show you and help you work out for yourself, what peoples and what nations may present future problems to you and your loved ones. This book will also help you understand -- why? Larry Burchall is an ex-professional soldier. He shows that it was activists who have caused many of the changes whose benefits we now enjoy, but he also shows that it was activists who did the damage on 11 September. Burchall shows the link between what's called activism and what's referred to as terrorism. Some of the ideas set out in this book may cause you unease. You may end up feeling concerned as the author describes the workings of important modern media and the effects that these workings can have on you. You'll find a description of just who and what constitutes the "west" and "westerners." Will the "west" be able to put an end to terrorism? You'll find an interesting answer in these pages.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some have claimed that "War is too important to be left to the generals," but P. W. Singer asks "What about the business executives?" Breaking out of the guns-for-hire mold of traditional mercenaries, corporations now sell skills and services that until recently only state militaries possessed. Their products range from trained commando teams to strategic advice from generals. This new "Privatized Military Industry" encompasses hundreds of companies, thousands of employees, and billions of dollars in revenue. Whether as proxies or suppliers, such firms have participated in wars in Africa, Asia, the Balkans, and Latin America. More recently, they have become a key element in U.S. military operations. Private corporations working for profit now sway the course of national and international conflict, but the consequences have been little explored. In this book, Singer provides the first account of the military services industry and its broader implications. Corporate Warriors includes a description of how the business works, as well as portraits of each of the basic types of companies: military providers that offer troops for tactical operations; military consultants that supply expert advice and training; and military support companies that sell logistics, intelligence, and engineering. In an updated edition of P. W. Singer's classic account of the military services industry and its broader implications, the author describes the continuing importance of that industry in the Iraq War. This conflict has amply borne out Singer's argument that the privatization of warfare allows startling new capabilities and efficiencies in the ways that war is carried out. At the same time, however, Singer finds that the introduction of the profit motive onto the battlefield raises troubling questions—for democracy, for ethics, for management, for human rights, and for national security.

Book excerpt: This edited book demonstrates a new multidimensional comprehension of the relationship between war, the military and civil society by exploring the global rise of paramilitary culture. Moving beyond binary understandings that inform the militarization of culture thesis and examining various national and cultural contexts, the collection outlines ways in which a process of paramilitarization is shaping the world through the promotion of new warrior archetypes. It is argued that while the paramilitary hero is associated with military themes, their character is in tension with the central principals of modern military organization, something that often challenges the state’s perceived monopoly on violence. As such paramilitization has profound implications for institutional military identity, the influence of paramilitary organizations and broadly how organised violence is popularly understood

Book excerpt: Warrior Rising: Seven Journeys Book 1 By: Ann Shaw The time of the Elfain Warriors is over. Their tales of bravery and their ability to wield the elements are all that remain of the heroes of old. However, there are the Foretellings that tell of the Warrior’s return to defeat a black shadow that threatens to destroy the Kingdom of Albavar. Gildon is a scholar and a wanderer. He believes that the warriors will return, and he thinks that he may have found one of them in Cole, an orphan and an apprentice to a carpenter. Cole may seem normal, but Gildon soon discovers that Cole can wield, and not only that, but he can see the future or past of anyone he touches. Because of his gift, he sees an old enemy of Albavar rise again. Shelrin, the once dark Warlord who ruled over Albavar with cruelty and malice, has broken free of Grimhold prison and is determined to take back the Kingship’s throne. Bearing the weapons of ancient power, Shelrin seems unstoppable. But there is hope. The Elfain Warrior and Seer, Ayden, saw the war that would rise long after he was gone. He ordered seven weapons be hidden throughout the land, so when the time came, the returning warriors would find them and use them to destroy the great darkness that threatens Albavar. Because of his gift, Cole knows where these weapons are. So, with the help of seven companions, Cole sets out to travel across Albavar to find the weapons and fight the darkness that Shelrin is causing. As the first book in the Seven Journeys series, Warrior Rising will thrill readers and show that even those who have gone before us still hold a great strength which is passed to the current generation.
