This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Extending from Colorado, USA, on the north to the state of Chihuahua, Mexico, on the south, the Rio Grande rift divides the Colorado Plateau on the west from the interior of the North American craton on the east. This volume focuses on the Rio Grande rift's upper crustal basins and is organized geographically with study areas progressing from north to south. Nineteen chapters cover a variety of topics, including sedimentation history, rift basin geometries and the influence of older structure on rift basin evolution, faulting and strain transfer within and among basins, relations of magmatism to rift tectonism, and basin hydrogeology"--Provided by publisher.

Book excerpt: In the course of the hundreds of Rio Chama rafting trips that we've logged during the last 30 years, none of us has ever had a bad trip. Such is the magic of the Rio Chama. No matter the weather, the water level, the season, the crowded Big Eddy boat ramp on a blistering Sunday afternoon, or even the coffee forgotten at home, the Rio Chama remains "The People's River." Its stunning beauty, plus its exceptional camping, user-friendly whitewater, and mostly predictable flows, combine to create one of the Southwest's premiere, multi-day, river running experiences. The spectacular, towering canyon walls of the Wild & Scenic section through the remote Chama River Canyon Wilderness is New Mexico's own "Grand Canyon." The geology of the Rio Chama is so exceptional that this river is ideally suited for a river guide with a geological theme. And so, following the release of the Rio Grande geologic river guide in 2011, we turned our (part-time) attention to the Rio Chama. Although most Rio Chama recreation is focused on the El Vado to Big Eddy stretch, thedecision was easily made to include the entire boatable section, from the highlands in Colorado to the confluence with the Rio Grande, as each section of the river displays its own visual spectacles and assortment of adventures. Plus, the geology is magnificent and diverse along the entire length of the river.

Download or read book Tectonics written by Eldridge M. Moores and published by Waveland Press. This book was released on 2014-07-23 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deformation of the Earth’s crust happens at a multitude of scales, ranging from submicroscopic to planetary. Tectonics explores structures and processes from regional to global, differentiating itself from the material covered in most structural geology textbooks. Moores and Twiss emphasize basic principles and methodologies of tectonics, embracing the time-honored perspective of using present processes to understand the past. Comprehensive in scope and detail, coverage includes the effects of plate motions and reconstructions and the resultant structures associated with active rift, transform, and subduction boundaries as well as triple junctions and collision zones; deformations of both the ocean basins and the continents; and orogenic belts. Moores and Twiss present tectonics as an open-ended field of study in which assumptions can be challenged and interpretations changed. The authors emphasize the use of models as a means of understanding observations and putting them in context to maintain a distinction between what we know from observing the Earth and what we infer from interpretation.

Book Synopsis A Field Guide to the Plants and Animals of the Middle Rio Grande Bosque by : Jean-Luc E. Cartron
Download or read book A Field Guide to the Plants and Animals of the Middle Rio Grande Bosque written by Jean-Luc E. Cartron and published by UNM Press. This book was released on 2008-11-15 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extending from the spillway below Cochiti Dam, about fifty miles north of Albuquerque, to the headwaters of Elephant Butte Reservoir, near Truth or Consequences in the southern portion of New Mexico, the Middle Rio Grande Bosque is more than a cottonwood woodland or forest. It is a complete riverside ecosystem, among the more important in the world's arid regions. Every day hundreds of visitors to the bosque encounter flora and fauna they can't identify. Researchers and municipal, county, state, and federal resource agency personnel concerned with the bosque's management need to know how plants and animals are linked to their habitats. With descriptions of more than seven hundred plants and animals illustrated with color photographs, this authoritative guide is the first of its kind for the Middle Rio Grande Bosque and is an invaluable resource for land managers, teachers, students, eco-buffs, and nature enthusiasts. It also reveals the important role the bosque plays in New Mexico's natural heritage.

Book Synopsis Inland Dunes of North America by : Nicholas Lancaster
Download or read book Inland Dunes of North America written by Nicholas Lancaster and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-05-20 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inland sand dunes are widespread in North America and are found from the North Slope of Alaska to the Sonoran Desert in northern Mexico and from the Delmarva Peninsula in the east to Southern California in the west. In this edited book, we highlight recent research on areas of inland dunes that span a range from those that are actively accumulating in current conditions of climate and sediment supply to those that were formed in past conditions and are now degraded relict systems. This book will be of interest to researchers and scholars of physical geography, geomorphology, environmental sciences, and earth sciences. Contributions include detailed analyses of individual active dune systems at White Sands, New Mexico; Great Sand Dunes, Colorado; and the Laurentian Great Lakes; as well as the vegetation-stabilized dunes of the Nebraska Sand Hills and the Colorado Plateau. Additional chapters discuss the widespread partially vegetated dune systems of the central and southern Great Plains; the relict dunes of the Atlantic Coastal Plain of the eastern USA; and active and stabilized dunes of the Colorado Plateau and the southwestern deserts of the USA and northern Mexico.

Book Synopsis Rio Grande Rift by : Jonathan F. Callender
Download or read book Rio Grande Rift written by Jonathan F. Callender and published by American Geophysical Union. This book was released on 1991-01-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Field Trip Guidebooks Series, Volume 138. It was only in the 1970s that the Rio Grande rift came to be recognized as a coherent tectonic feature which was more than simply an arm of the Basin and Range province (e.g., Chapin, 1971, 1988; Decker and Smithson, 1975; Cordell, 1978). The international scientific community was largely unaware of this feature until an international rift conference was convened in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in the fall of 1978. The volume published as a result of this conference (Riecker, 1979) established the Rio Grande rift as an important Cenozoic Continental rift, and the guidebook produced for this conference (Hawley, 1978) is the basis of this field trip. Although many questions remain, the many studies conducted since 1978 provide an improved picture of the nature and evolution of this rift which extends from northern Colorado into northern Mexico and is superficially similar to the Kenyan arm of the East African rift (Fig. 1). The discussions which follow are intended to augment the papers in Riecker (1979) and briefly review results obtained since its publication. Other recent volumes on the rift include a special section of the Journal of Geophysical Research (May 1986), New Mexico Geological Society Guidebooks for the 1979, 1980, 1982, 1983, 1984, and 1986 field conferences, and field trip guides by Gile et al. (1981), McLemore and Bowie (1987), and Menges (1987).
