The purpose of the book is to present the current state of the art in the theory of PI-algebras. The review of the classical results in the last few years has pointed out new perspectives for the development of the theory. In particular, the contributions emphasize on the computational and combinatorial aspects of the theory, its connection with invariant theory, representation theory, growth problems. It is addressed to researchers in the field.

Book excerpt: The algebra of square matrices of size n ~ 2 over the field of complex numbers is, evidently, the best-known example of a non-commutative alge 1 bra • Subalgebras and subrings of this algebra (for example, the ring of n x n matrices with integral entries) arise naturally in many areas of mathemat ics. Historically however, the study of matrix algebras was preceded by the discovery of quatemions which, introduced in 1843 by Hamilton, found ap plications in the classical mechanics of the past century. Later it turned out that quaternion analysis had important applications in field theory. The al gebra of quaternions has become one of the classical mathematical objects; it is used, for instance, in algebra, geometry and topology. We will briefly focus on other examples of non-commutative rings and algebras which arise naturally in mathematics and in mathematical physics. The exterior algebra (or Grassmann algebra) is widely used in differential geometry - for example, in geometric theory of integration. Clifford algebras, which include exterior algebras as a special case, have applications in rep resentation theory and in algebraic topology. The Weyl algebra (Le. algebra of differential operators with· polynomial coefficients) often appears in the representation theory of Lie algebras. In recent years modules over the Weyl algebra and sheaves of such modules became the foundation of the so-called microlocal analysis. The theory of operator algebras (Le.

This book was released on 2020-12-14 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A polynomial identity for an algebra (or a ring) A A is a polynomial in noncommutative variables that vanishes under any evaluation in A A. An algebra satisfying a nontrivial polynomial identity is called a PI algebra, and this is the main object of study in this book, which can be used by graduate students and researchers alike. The book is divided into four parts. Part 1 contains foundational material on representation theory and noncommutative algebra. In addition to setting the stage for the rest of the book, this part can be used for an introductory course in noncommutative algebra. An expert reader may use Part 1 as reference and start with the main topics in the remaining parts. Part 2 discusses the combinatorial aspects of the theory, the growth theorem, and Shirshov's bases. Here methods of representation theory of the symmetric group play a major role. Part 3 contains the main body of structure theorems for PI algebras, theorems of Kaplansky and Posner, the theory of central polynomials, M. Artin's theorem on Azumaya algebras, and the geometric part on the variety of semisimple representations, including the foundations of the theory of Cayley–Hamilton algebras. Part 4 is devoted first to the proof of the theorem of Razmyslov, Kemer, and Braun on the nilpotency of the nil radical for finitely generated PI algebras over Noetherian rings, then to the theory of Kemer and the Specht problem. Finally, the authors discuss PI exponent and codimension growth. This part uses some nontrivial analytic tools coming from probability theory. The appendix presents the counterexamples of Golod and Shafarevich to the Burnside problem.

Book excerpt: A functional identity can be informally described as an identical relation involving arbitrary elements in an associative ring together with arbitrary (unknown) functions. The theory of functional identities is a relatively new one, and this is the first book on this subject. The book is accessible to a wide audience and touches on a variety of mathematical areas such as ring theory, algebra and operator theory.

The thirty-eight articles in this volume encompass the proceedings of the International Conference on Algebra and Its Applications (Athens, OH, 1999), which explored the applications and interplay among the disciplines of ring theory, linear algebra, and coding theory. The presentations collected here reflect the dialogue between mathematicians involved in theoretical aspects of algebra and mathematicians involved in solving problems where state-of-the-art research tools may be used and applied. This Contemporary Mathematics series volume communicates the potential for collaboration among those interested in exploring the wealth of applications for abstract algebra in fields such as information and coding. The expository papers would serve well as supplemental reading in graduate seminars.
