Book excerpt: The book intends to be a collection of research papers on algebra and related topics, most of which were presented at the international "Workshop on Associative Rings and Algebras with additional structures (WARA22)". The purpose of the workshop WARA22 was to present the current state of the art both in the Theory of Lie structures of associative rings and algebras and in the Theory of functional identities in rings. The conference has emerged as a powerful forum offering researchers the opportunity to meet, get to know each other and discuss advances in ring theory, inspiring further research directions. The main topics covered refer to rings with involution, Lie and Jordan structures, rings and algebras arising under various constructions, modules, bimodules and ideals in associative algebras, behavior of derivations, automorphisms and other kinds of additive maps in rings and algebras. All the contributing authors are leading international academicians and researchers in their respective fields. The papers cover a wide range of topics in ring theory, group theory, matrix algebra and graph theory. The book will serve both the specialist looking for the latest results and the novice looking for the appropriate references to access the study and understanding of the results presented here.

Book excerpt: Advanced Electromagnetism: Foundations, Theory and Applications treats what is conventionally called electromagnetism or Maxwell's theory within the context of gauge theory or Yang-Mills theory. A major theme of this book is that fields are not stand-alone entities but are defined by their boundary conditions. The book has practical relevance to efficient antenna design, the understanding of forces and stresses in high energy pulses, ring laser gyros, high speed computer logic elements, efficient transfer of power, parametric conversion, and many other devices and systems. Conventional electromagnetism is shown to be an underdeveloped, rather than a completely developed, field of endeavor, with major challenges in development still to be met.

Book excerpt: This book is aimed to be a ‘technical’ book on graded rings. By ‘technical’ we mean that the book should supply a kit of tools of quite general applicability, enabling the reader to build up his own further study of non-commutative rings graded by an arbitrary group. The body of the book, Chapter A, contains: categorical properties of graded modules, localization of graded rings and modules, Jacobson radicals of graded rings, the structure thedry for simple objects in the graded sense, chain conditions, Krull dimension of graded modules, homogenization, homological dimension, primary decomposition, and more. One of the advantages of the generality of Chapter A is that it allows direct applications of these results to the theory of group rings, twisted and skew group rings and crossed products. With this in mind we have taken care to point out on several occasions how certain techniques may be specified to the case of strongly graded rings. We tried to write Chapter A in such a way that it becomes suitable for an advanced course in ring theory or general algebra, we strove to make it as selfcontained as possible and we included several problems and exercises. Other chapters may be viewed as an attempt to show how the general techniques of Chapter A can be applied in some particular cases, e.g. the case where the gradation is of type Z. In compiling the material for Chapters B and C we have been guided by our own research interests. Chapter 6 deals with commutative graded rings of type 2 and we focus on two main topics: artihmeticallygraded domains, and secondly, local conditions for Noetherian rings. In Chapter C we derive some structural results relating to the graded properties of the rings considered. The following classes of graded rings receive special attention: fully bounded Noetherian rings, birational extensions of commutative rings, rings satisfying polynomial identities, and Von Neumann regular rings. Here the basic idea is to derive results of ungraded nature from graded information. Some of these sections lead naturally to the study of sheaves over the projective spectrum Proj(R) of a positively graded ring, but we did not go into these topics here. We refer to [125] for a noncommutative treatment of projective geometry, i.e. the geometry of graded P.I. algebras.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contains 25 surveys in algebra and model theory, all written by leading experts in the field. The surveys are based around talks given at conferences held in Essen, 1994, and Dresden, 1995. Each contribution is written in such a way as to highlight the ideas that were discussed at the conferences, and also to stimulate open research problems in a form accessible to the whole mathematical community. The topics include field and ring theory as well as groups, ordered algebraic structure and their relationship to model theory. Several papers deal with infinite permutation groups, abelian groups, modules and their relatives and representations. Model theoretic aspects include quantifier elimination in skew fields, Hilbert's 17th problem, (aleph-0)-categorical structures and Boolean algebras. Moreover symmetry questions and automorphism groups of orders are covered. This work contains 25 surveys in algebra and model theory, each is written in such a way as to highlight the ideas that were discussed at Conferences, and also to stimulate open research problems in a form accessible to the whole mathematical community.

Book excerpt: From September 1970 through May 1971 Tulane University organized a special year long program in the theory of noncommutative rings and operator algebras. Visitors from various institutions of the U.S.A. and abroad contributed to a series of lectures in which they covered recent advances in their own field of specialty. These notes contain these lectures to the extent that they have not appeared elsewhere. This volume presents the lectures on applications of topology to ring theory, through the representation of rings by sections in sheaves.
