Book excerpt: An important class of carbonylation reactions to construct lactams are those that involve the direct "stitching" of carbon monoxide into a nitrogen heterocycle resulting in ring expansion. Cobalt carbonyl catalyzed the carbonylation of a series of 2-substituted pyrrolidines to form piperidinones. The reaction is regiospecific in most cases and the yield of product is increased when ruthenium carbonyl is present as a second catalyst. Chapter 2 of this thesis describes this piece of work.

Book excerpt: Synthetically useful organic reactions or reagents are often referred to by the name of the discoverer(s) or developer(s). Older name reactions are described in text books, but more recently developed synthetically useful reactions that may have been associated occasionally with a name are not always well known. For neither of the above are experimental procedures or references easy to find. In this monograph approximately 500 name reactions are included, of which over 200 represent newer name reactions and modern reagents. Each of these reactions are extremely useful for the contemporary organic chemistry researcher in industry or academic institutions. This book provides the information in an easily accessible form. In addition to seminal references and reviews, one or more examples for each name reaction are provided and a complete typical experimental procedure is included, to enable the student or researcher to immediately evaluate reaction conditions. Besides an alphabetical listing of reactions and reagents, cross references permit the organic practitioner to find those name reactions or reagents that enable specific transformations, such as, conversion of amines to nitriles, stereoselective reduction, fluoroalkylation, phenol alkynylation, asymmetric syntheses, allylic alkylation, nucleoside synthesis, cyclopentanation, hydrozirconation, to name a few. Emphasis has been placed on stereoselective and regioselective transformations as well as on enantioselective processes. The listing of reactions and reagents is supported by four indexes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chemistry of Heterocyclic Compounds, since its inception, has been recognized as a cornerstone of heterocyclic chemistry. Each volume attempts to discuss all aspects – properties, synthesis, reactions, physiological and industrial significance – of a specific ring system. To keep the series up-to-date, supplementary volumes covering the recent literature on each individual ring system have been published. Many ring systems (such as pyridines and oxazoles) are treated in distinct books, each consisting of separate volumes or parts dealing with different individual topics. With all authors are recognized authorities, the Chemistry of Heterocyclic Chemistry is considered worldwide as the indispensable resource for organic, bioorganic, and medicinal chemists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heterocyclic chemistry is one of the largest branches of chemistry. Heterocycles play major roles in important fields such as medicinal and pharmaceutical chemistries, agrochemicals or polymers. A good understanding of the comparative reactivity of simple five- and six-membered rings, i.e. pyrrole vs pyridine type rings, makes it possible to approach or predict the reactivity of more complex heterocycles. This book is a compilation of exercises, mostly adapted from published works. For more clarity we have chosen to limit ourselves to nitrogen containing heterocycles. The book is mainly aimed to Master students, but it will also be of interest for anyone who wants to train in this important field of synthetic chemistry. The book is organized in five sections. In the first chapter, typical syntheses along with metal catalyzed pathways are presented. The two following chapters are devoted to the chemical reactivity of the six-membered (pyridine, quinoline, azines) and five-membered rings (pyrrole, indole, azoles). In these two chapters, the exercises of increasing difficulties focus on the main types of reactions, including electrophilic and nucleophilic aromatic substitutions, N-alkylation and N-arylation, lithiation and other organometallic reactions, and metal catalyzed cross-coupling reactions. In the fourth chapter, the principles discussed in the previous chapters will be applied to the chemistry of complex polycyclic heterocycles containing both five and six membered rings (pyrrolyl-pyridine, aza-indole, indolizine, purine). The exercise solutions are commented in a separate chapter at the end of the book. Basic notions of nomenclature are given in a short appendix, allowing students to find out a ring structure from its name.

Book excerpt: Rhodium has proven to be an extremely useful metal due to its ability to catalyze an array of synthetic transformations, with quite often-unique selectivity. Hydrogenation, C-H activation, allylic substitution, and numerous other reactions are catalyzed by this metal, which presumably accounts for the dramatic increase in the number of articles that have recently emerged on the topic. P. Andrew Evans, the editor of this much-needed book, has assembled an internationally renowned team to present the first comprehensive coverage of this important area. The book features contributions from leaders in the field of rhodium-catalyzed reactions, and thereby provides a detailed account of the most current developments, including: Rhodium-Catalyzed Asymmetric Hydrogenation (Zhang) Rhodium-Catalyzed Hydroborations and Related Reactions (Brown) Rhodium-Catalyzed Asymmetric Addition of Organometallic Reagents to Electron Deficient Olefins (Hayashi) Recent Advances in Rhodium(I)-Catalyzed Asymmetric Olefin Isomerization and Hydroacylation Reactions (Fu) Stereoselective Rhodium(I)-Catalyzed Hydroformylation and Silylformylation Reactions and Their Application to Organic Synthesis (Leighton) Carbon-Carbon Bond-Forming Reactions Starting from Rh-H or Rh-Si Species (Matsuda) Rhodium(I)-Catalyzed Cycloisomerization and Cyclotrimerization Reactions (Ojima) The Rhodium(I)-Catalyzed Alder-ene Reaction (Brummond) Rhodium-Catalyzed Nucleophilic Ring Cleaving Reactions of Allylic Ethers and Amines (Fagnou) Rhodium(I)-Catalyzed Allylic Substitution Reactions and their Applications to Target Directed Synthesis (Evans) Rhodium(I)-Catalyzed [2+2+1] and [4+1] Carbocyclization Reactions (Jeong) Rhodium(I)-Catalyzed [4+2] and [4+2+2] Carbocyclizations (Robinson) Rhodium(I)-Catalyzed [5+2], [6+2], and [5+2+1] Cycloadditions: New Reactions for Organic Synthesis (Wender) Rhodium(II)-Stabilized Carbenoids Containing both Donor and Acceptor Substituents (Davies) Chiral Dirhodium(II)Carboxamidates for Asymmetric Cyclopropanation and Carbon-Hydrogen Insertion Reactions (Doyle) Cyclopentane Construction by Rhodium(II)-Mediated Intramolecular C-H Insertion (Taber) Rhodium(II)-Catalyzed Oxidative Amination (DuBois) Rearrangement Processes of Oxonium and Ammonium Ylides Formed by Rhodium(II)-Catalyzed Carbene-Transfer (West) Rhodium(II)-Catalyzed 1,3-Dipolar Cycloaddition Reactions (Austin) "Modern Rhodium-Catalyzed Organic Reactions" is an essential reference text for researchers at all levels in the general area of organic chemistry. This book provides an invaluable overview of the most significant developments in this important area of research, and will no doubt be an essential text for researchers at academic institutions and professionals at pharmaceutical/agrochemical companies.
