Si arrivò al punto che Milton Friedman, il campione del monetarismo, che predicava la necessità di impedire allo stato di intervenire nell’economia e di lasciare ai mercati la massima libertà (idee assolutamente in contrasto con quelle di Keynes), poteva dire “siamo tutti keynesiani, ormai”. Come è stato possibile mettere Keynes nel pantheon del neoliberismo? Che conseguenze ciò ha avuto sullo sviluppo del pensiero economico? Giorgio La Malfa racconta con grande chiarezza i passaggi di questa appassionante vicenda intellettuale e mette in luce la fondamentale portata politica dell’eredità di Keynes, che va recuperata nella sua iniziale forza radicale per dare un fondamento alla differenza fra destra e sinistra – una differenza che nel mondo contemporaneo deve ritrovare la sua efficacia.

Recent scholarship and research has demonstrated considerable rivalry and controversy concerning the proper interpretation of Keynes's works, such that recourse to the original text is all the more important. Although considered by a few critics that the sentence structures of the book are quite incomprehensible and almost unbearable to read, the book is an essential reading for all those who desire a basic education in economics. The key to understanding Keynes is the notion that at particular times in the business cycle, an economy can become over-productive (or under-consumptive) and thus, a vicious spiral is begun that results in massive layoffs and cuts in production as businesses attempt to equilibrate aggregate supply and demand. Thus, full employment is only one of many or multiple macro equilibria. If an economy reaches an underemployment equilibrium, something is necessary to boost or stimulate demand to produce full employment. This something could be business investment but because of the logic and individualist nature of investment decisions, it is unlikely to rapidly restore full employment. Keynes logically seizes upon the public budget and government expenditures as the quickest way to restore full employment. Diese Voraussetzungen waren in der Weltwirtschaftskrise erf llt, Preise und L hne sanken im gro en Umfang, jedoch war eine Tendenz zur R ckkehr zur Vollbesch ftigung nicht erkennbar. Keynes folgerte vor diesem Hintergrund, dass sich die in einer Krise automatisch ausgel ste Tendenz zur R ckkehr zum Gleichgewicht, wenn berhaupt vorhanden, nur sehr langsam und "schmerzhaft" vollzog. Dies verlangte, laut Keynes, nach einer neuen Theorie, die die wahren Gr nde der Arbeitslosigkeit beschrieb und zugleich den Weg aus der Krise aufzeigte. Keynes leitendes Interesse bestand darin eine Theorie zu entwickeln, welche die Realit t der Krise abbildete und der Wirtschaftspolitik praktische Ratschl ge lieferte, wie eine Krise bew ltigt werden konnte. Diese Arbeit widmet sich zwei zentralen Gegenst nden der "General Theory", n mlich dem Konsum und dem Multiplikator.
