Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The English Civil War and its aftermath was a time of human devastation, political uncertainty and religious instability. Amid the turmoil of those times, however, the Church of England also saw intense liturgical inventiveness. The Directory for Public Worship, Jeremy Taylor's Communion Office, and Richard Baxter's Reformed Liturgy, are all examples of resourceful liturgies born out of the ashes of the English Civil War. The Church of England had not witnessed such liturgical innovation since Thomas Cranmer, and would not see such creativity again until the end of the twentieth century - at least in terms of liturgical texts. In Richard Baxter's Reformation of the Liturgy, Glen J. Segger examines the theology and ecclesiology of Baxter’s liturgical opus. While never approved for public use, the Reformed Liturgy remains an important and creative liturgy representative of those who fought for their Puritan convictions, but lost.

Book Synopsis Reformation Pastors by : William J. Black
Download or read book Reformation Pastors written by William J. Black and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work examines Richard Baxter's understanding and practice of pastoral ministry from the perspective of his own stated concern for reformation and in the broader context of Edwardian, Elizabethan, and early Stuart pastoral ideals and practice. It investigates Baxter's major treatise on pastoral ministry, 'Gildas Salvianus, the Reformed Pastor' (1656), and explores the background of each aspect of his pastoral strategy. Far from being novel, Baxter's practice of pastoral ministry certainly reflects aspects of his puritan predecessors' practice, if not their rhetoric. Black argues, however, that the primary contours of Baxter's ministry look back, not to the puritan pastoral ideals and strategies dominant after the Elizabethan Settlement, but to the Edwardian reformation emphases of the exiled Strasbourg reformer Martin Bucer. The book concludes by considering the impact of Baxter's pastoral legacy, both on the lives of individual pastors and on the subsequent discussion of puritan ministry.

Book Synopsis Hymns and Hymnody: Historical and Theological Introductions, Volume 2 by : Mark A. Lamport
Download or read book Hymns and Hymnody: Historical and Theological Introductions, Volume 2 written by Mark A. Lamport and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-05-24 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hymns and the music the church sings in worship are tangible means of expressing worship. And while worship is one of, if not the central functions of the church along with mission, service, education, justice, and compassion, and occupies a prime focus of our churches, a renewed sense of awareness to our theological presuppositions and cultural cues must be maintained to ensure a proper focus in worship. Hymns and Hymnody: Historical and Theological Introductions is a sixty-chapter, three-volume introductory textbook describing the most influential hymnists, liturgists, and musical movements of the church. This academically grounded resource evaluates both the historical and theological perspectives of the major hymnists and composers who have impacted the church over the course of twenty centuries. Volume 1 explores the early church and concludes with the Renaissance era hymnists. Volume 2 begins with the Reformation and extends to the eighteenth-century hymnists and liturgists. Volume 3 engages nineteenth century hymnists to the contemporary movements of the twenty-first century. Each chapter contains these five elements: historical background, theological perspectives communicated in their hymns/compositions, contribution to liturgy and worship, notable hymns, and bibliography. The mission of Hymns and Hymnody is (1) to provide biographical data on influential hymn writers for students and interested laypeople, and (2) to provide a theological analysis of what these composers have communicated in the theology of their hymns. We believe it is vital for those involved in leading the worship of the church to recognize that what they communicate is in fact theology. This latter aspect, we contend, is missing--yet important--in accessible formats for the current literature.

Book Synopsis Of Thine Own Have We Given Thee by : Shawn O. Strout
Download or read book Of Thine Own Have We Given Thee written by Shawn O. Strout and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2024-02-29 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every Sunday around the world, Christians offer money and in-kind gifts to the church, traditionally known as alms. This act produces questions about what it means to offer God a gift when God has offered humanity the greatest gift in Jesus Christ, or the balance of favour or gratitude in the giving of these gifts. These very questions, and more, have had a significant influence on the liturgical theology, particularly in the offertory, within Anglicanism. In Of Thine Own Have We Given, Shawn O. Strout provides a comprehensive analysis of the offertory rites, including in his analysis other churches within the Anglican Communion, beyond the Church of England. Ordered historically, the book encompasses the sixteenth century through to current times, scrutinising the offertory and oblationary changes throughout their religious and historical contexts. Strout argues that the development of oblation in the offertory was neither arbitrary nor episodic, but rather the result of sustained theological tension. Using liturgical theology's tools of historical, textual, and contextual analyses, the book examines why these developments occurred and their importance for the church today.
Book Synopsis A Practical Theology of Family Worship by : Jonathan Williams
Download or read book A Practical Theology of Family Worship written by Jonathan Williams and published by Reformation Heritage Books. This book was released on 2021-08-31 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baxter believed that family worship is God’s will, a conviction that profoundly shaped and motivated his pastoral ministry in Kidderminster. It is said that, at the beginning of his ministry, hardly one family to a street honored God in family worship; by the end of his ministry, there were streets on which every family upheld the practice. In A Practical Theology of Family Worship, Jonathan Williams examines Baxter’s context, the encouragements he gave for family worship, and his family-equipping ministry among the congregation. This study develops our understanding of this vital spiritual discipline among the Puritans. Yet it also draws out implications for family ministry in churches today. Table of Contents: 1. The Blessings of Family Worship 2. Historical Examination of Baxter’s Context as a Seventeenth-Century English Puritan 3. Baxter’s Encouragement for Family Worship 4. Family Worship Brings Opportunities for Teaching the Word of God 5. Family Worship Fills the Home with Prayer and Praises 6. Baxter’s Family-Equipping Ministry at Kidderminster 7. Implications for Today’s Church and Family Ministry Appendix 1: Further Encouragement for Family Worship Appendix 2: A Sample Guide for Family Worship Appendix 3: Opportunities for Reflection: Discussion Questions
