Book excerpt: The three stories in this book are typical of the work I have been doing for children for the past sixty years or so. Children are very bright and this work teaches them we are not all alike and that to be different is not a burden but a blessing. In each case the children in these stories overcome adversity and become the heroes and heroines of their own lives. They will learn through these beautiful and love filled stories that not being like everyone else is not so bad after all. Excitement and adventure is there for everyone regardless of our station in life. I have learned a child's imagination has no limits and if allowed they see things and dream dreams we adults have long forgotten.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in 1938 I grew up in the west. As a youngster I traveled back and forth across this country by the old locomotive steamers watching cowboys herd cattle from horseback and seeing dust storms on the plains. A vision and memory I've never forgotten. Copper Penny is an action packed romantic western that plays out in the American west in the eighteen sixties with chapters and language I am sure will shock most of the readers I have had through the years, but as in all of my writing I have done in the past the reader will find it historically correct and the language used was the language of the times. Gangsters from Chicago leave a trail of blood and death all the way to Wyoming before a young halfbreed Deputy Marshall nicknamed Copper Penny steps in to protect his Indiana mother and the gold she has been sent over the years by the boy's father a Shoshone Chief. Together with the U.S. Marshal Jack Cunningham and two mountain men who show up from time to time the battle rages and bodies litter the landscape all the way across the Great Plains and back to Chicago. The characters in this book create and solve their own problems in a way that will hold the reader spellbound from the first page to the last. Bernard Albertson

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's moviegoers and critics generally consider some Hollywood products--even some blockbusters--to be legitimate works of art. But during the first half century of motion pictures very few Americans would have thought to call an American movie "art." Up through the 1950s, American movies were regarded as a form of popular, even lower-class, entertainment. By the 1960s and 1970s, however, viewers were regularly judging Hollywood films by artistic criteria previously applied only to high art forms. In Hollywood Highbrow, Shyon Baumann for the first time tells how social and cultural forces radically changed the public's perceptions of American movies just as those forces were radically changing the movies themselves. The development in the United States of an appreciation of film as an art was, Baumann shows, the product of large changes in Hollywood and American society as a whole. With the postwar rise of television, American movie audiences shrank dramatically and Hollywood responded by appealing to richer and more educated viewers. Around the same time, European ideas about the director as artist, an easing of censorship, and the development of art-house cinemas, film festivals, and the academic field of film studies encouraged the idea that some American movies--and not just European ones--deserved to be considered art.

Book excerpt: Jesus Arrested and Crucified is an exciting fictional story about three Hebrew children who hear about the arrest of Jesus Christ and follow Him all the way to the cross and are there when the stone is rolled away. The book is full of emotion and love and is written candidly for children because I believe the world has reached a time when truth though often harsh and shocking is needed.

This next piece of information shocked me a bit however. It seems that after Jesus told the disciples His flesh was "real food", and His blood was "real drink" he along with many of the other disciples left Jesus. However Saint Peter brought him back and he became Peter's interpreter writing the "Gospel according to Mark". He also founded the church of Alexandria. Born in Cyrene in North Africa (Modern day Libya) when he went home to Alexandria to try and turn the city from evil worship in AD68 the idolaters put a rope around his neck and dragged him through the city streets until he was dead.

"BOUND BY BLUE by Meg Tuite sparkles darkly with dense, poetic prose also resembling a hidden knife or gag in the deepest shade of indigo. At the heart of Tuite's work is memory specifically, often, the memory of sexual trauma. From externally successful medical student Audrey in 'The F Word, ' whose revisited sexual past spurs a destructive eating disorder that nearly debilitates her current romantic relationship, to the sweet seven year old Marliss in 'The Tooth Fairy, ' writing with a child's literacy to the Tooth Fairy in the nearly impossible hope of being saved from her brother's molesting friend, Tuite deftly runs the gamut of characters emerging from the camp of life's walking wounded. Often, I found, while reading this collection, that I had to pause and absorb, spend a moment away after reading one particular story or another. Tuite's work is that dark, trenchant, and powerful. The binding garotte here is that of forced silences, of invisible shames, of acts of violence done by one individual to another, the cumulative maimed butterfly effect of these agents and be forewarned, with the aid of Tuite's deft skill, the monsters are out of the closets, lingering with lambs, in this explosive collection where even the darkest of her characters is acerbically revealed as human, multi-faceted, and just flawed enough to be somewhat sympathetic in a horrifying and double-edged way that only increases the reader's understanding of their abuse's terrifying resonance for their victims." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Affective Health and Masculinities in South Africa explores how different masculinities modulate substance use, interpersonal violence, suicidality, and AIDS as well as recovery cross-culturally. With a focus on three male protagonists living in very distinct urban areas of Cape Town, this comparative ethnography shows that men's struggles to become invulnerable increase vulnerability. Through an analysis of masculinities as social assemblages, the study shows how affective health problems are tied to modern individualism rather than African 'tradition' that has become a cliché in Eurocentric gender studies. Affective health is conceptualized as a balancing act between autonomy and connectivity that after colonialism and apartheid has become compromised through the imperative of self-reliance. This book provides a rare perspective on young men's vulnerability in everyday life that may affect the reader and spark discussion about how masculinities in relationships shape physical and psychological health. Moreover, it shows how men change in the face of distress in ways that may look different than global health and gender-transformative approaches envision. Thick descriptions of actual events over the life course make the study accessible to both graduate and undergraduate students in the social sciences. Contributing to current debates on mental health and masculinity, this volume will be of interest to scholars from various disciplines including anthropology, gender studies, African studies, psychology, and global health.

Book excerpt: Considered one of, or the greatest prophet by many religions his ministry lasted for over sixty years. He was a friend of Isaiah who lived in the Southern Kingdom and they both were to me very human in their heart felt love of the Holy Land and the people they were trying so desperately to save from themselves. Through the centuries these prophets have suffered greatly on our behalf, and we would do well to remember without their sufferings, pleading and prayers , we would have been destroyed long ago. but then God always prevails does He not?
