Book Synopsis Instructional Strategies for Improving Students' Learning by : Jerry Carlson
Download or read book Instructional Strategies for Improving Students' Learning written by Jerry Carlson and published by IAP. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twin objectives of the series Psychological Perspectives on Contemporary Educational Issues are: (1) to identify issues in education that are relevant to professional educators and researchers; and (2) to address those issues from research and theory in educational psychology, psychology, and related disciplines. The present volume, consisting of two focal chapters, commentaries, and final responses targets instructional strategies for improving students’ learning in two of the traditional “three R” areas, reading and ?rithmetic (mathematics), in the elementary school grades. The focal chapters in those two skill areas are written by leading contributors to the reading and mathematics research literatures, Cathy Collins Block for the reading section and Douglas Clements and Julie Sarama for the mathematics section. Few would dispute the essentiality of these two curricular domains in laying the foundation for the development of students’ competencies in a vast array of academic disciplines in both the in- and out-of-school years that lie ahead. The present volume is intended for practitioners and researchers who are seeking the latest instructional research-based strategies for improving students’ early reading and mathematics performance.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Reading Research by : Michael L. Kamil
Download or read book Handbook of Reading Research written by Michael L. Kamil and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2000 with total page 1025 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Volume III, as in Volumes I and II, the classic topics of reading are included--from vocabulary and comprehension to reading instruction in the classroom--and, in addition, each contributor was asked to include a brief history that chronicles the legacies within each of the volume's many topics. However, on the whole, Volume III is not about tradition. Rather, it explores the verges of reading research between the time Volume II was published in 1991 and the research conducted after this date. The editors identified two broad themes as representing the myriad of verges that have emerged since Volumes I and II were published: (1) broadening the definition of reading, and (2) broadening the reading research program. The particulars of these new themes and topics are addressed.

Book Synopsis Form-Function Mapping in Content-Based Language Teaching by : Magdalena Walenta
Download or read book Form-Function Mapping in Content-Based Language Teaching written by Magdalena Walenta and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-01-22 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a form-function mapping (FFM) model for balancing language and content gains within content-based language teaching (CBLT). It includes a theoretical part, which outlines the FFM model and, drawing on the analysis of eclectic teaching methods and interlanguage restructuring, proposes pedagogical tools for its implementation. These tools, which encourage mapping of language forms onto content knowledge, are hypothesized to facilitate interlanguage restructuring, thus helping CBLT learners in their struggle with L2 morpho-syntax. The empirical section presents the results of a quantitative–qualitative study conducted among adult L1 Polish learners of English in a CBLT context. It then goes on to translate the findings, which reveal that the FFM model has a positive and significant influence on interlanguage restructuring as well as a favorable reception among CBLT learners, into a set of pedagogical guidelines for practitioners.
