Book excerpt: The catalytic cooligomerizations of olefins are among the most important C-C coupling reactions. Many transition metals have been used as catalysts for this kind of reactions. They are rhodium, ruthenium, nickel, cobalt, palladium and iron etc.. In this paper the rhodium catalyzed cooligomerizations of ethylene and conjugated dienes were mainly studied. Rhodium catalyzed cooligomerization of ethylene with dienes gives versatile products with wide industrial applications. • For example, rhodium catalyzed cooligomerization of ethylene and 1,3-butadiene produces 1,4-hexadiene with a high selectivity to its trans-form, which is an important intermediate for the synthesis of EPDM (Ethylene-Propylene-Diene-Monomer). • Rhodium catalyzed cooligomerization of ethylene with conjugated methyl linoleate yields the branched and unsaturated fatty substances. The linoleate is a fatty substance direct from nature and sustainable resources. The branched fatty products and their derivatives possess low melting points and pour points, which have attractive prospects of applications in lubricants, cosmetics and some other industrial fields. • The rhodium catalyzed cooligomerization of ethylene and styrene affords 3-phenyl- 1-butene and serves as a model reaction for the synthesis of compounds with pharma- cological activity. Newsolventsystemsweredevelopedforthesecatalyticreactions. Mixturesofpolyethy- leneglycol1000andwaterwereusedfortherhodiumcatalyzedcooligomerizationofethy- lene and 1,3-butadiene. By using PEG1000/water solvent systems selective synthesis of trans-1,4-hexadiene has been achieved under moderate reaction conditions. PEG1000 based novel temperature-dependent multi-solvent systems were developed for the reac- tion of ethylene and conjugated methyl linoleate. Some poly-ether modified phosphorous ligands were synthesized and used to condition the product selectivity and suppress the catalyst leaching. Cinnamyl chloride was used as catalyst promoter and was found to be very effective in reactivating the decayed rhodium catalysts. More interesting is that the addition of this organic chloride largely enhanced the activity of rhodium catalysts in the reaction of ethylene and styrene.

Book excerpt: Liquid multiphase processes represent a promising option for realizing novel, efficient, and sustainable production processes, as required for the transformation towards climate-neutral manufacturing processes. This volume presents the results obtained over twelve years in the DFG-funded collaborative project Transregio 63 “Integrated Chemical Processes in Liquid Multiphase Systems”. In an interdisciplinary approach to the design and operation of such processes, essential principles of Green Chemistry are realized, such as using long-chain olefins as model representatives of renewable raw materials, highly effi cient catalysts, and green solvents, linked with process optimization to improve energy and material efficiency. Experts from different fields addressed all steps of the development process, from the description of the reactions on the molecular level via thermodynamics and the design of efficient separation processes to the operation of entire miniplants for liquid multiphase production processes. Thus, the complete development chain from the first reaction-related investigations in the laboratory to the technological realization in miniplants with model-based control is demonstrated. Numerous methodological innovations are proposed and validated using several innovative phase systems (thermomorphic multiphase systems, microemulsion systems, Pickering emulsions) and homogeneously catalyzed reactions. Engineers and chemists from the chemical industry as well as advanced students and researchers will get valuable insights into the physico-chemical phenomena in chemical multiphase processes and benefit from recommendations concerning methods for the selection of phase systems and rapid model-based process development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Organic Chemistry of Nickel, Volume I: Organonickel Complexes is devoted to a description of the organonickel complexes. The major goal is to provide a reference work, and for this reason a conventional layout has been adopted with separate chapters devoted to each type of organic ligand. In the interest of readability, known compounds have been assembled in tables at the end of each chapter, thereby allowing the text to be used for discussions of the general chemistry involved and to highlight the special reactions associated with nickel. Conscious of the needs of organometallic chemists, the authors included systems in which no nickel-carbon bond is involved. Among these is a chapter on the tetrakisligand nickel complexes and sections on dioxygen and azobenzene complexes. The nitrosyl complexes and complexes containing a metal-metal bond—topics frequently considered to be part of the domain of the organometallic chemist—have not received individual attention. Tables of the observed bond distances in organonickel complexes are provided as an Appendix; a short list of the more important review articles relevant to each organic ligand can be found at the end of each chapter.

Indeed, it is hard to find any complex synthesis or industrial process that does not, at some stage, utilize a catalytic reaction. The development of homogeneous transition metal catalysts on the laboratory scale has demonstrated that these systems can be far superior to the equivalent heterogeneous systems, at least in terms of selectivity. is an increasing interest in this field of research from both an Thus, there academic and industrial point of view. In connection with the rapid developments in this area, four universities from the E.E.C (Aachen, FRG; Liege, Belgium; Milan, Italy; and Lille, France) have collaborated to organise a series of seminars for high-level students and researchers. These meetings have been sponsored by the Commission of the E.E.C and state organizations. The most recent of these meetings was held in Lille in September 1985 and this book contains updated and expanded presentations of most of the lectures given there. These lectures are concerned with the field of homogeneous transition metal catalysis and its application to the synthesis of organic intermediates and fine chemicals from an academic and industrial viewpoint. The continuing petroleum crisis which began in the early 1970s has given rise to the need to develop new feedstocks for the chemical industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the proceedings of a symposium which was attended by researchers from all over the world who reported on and discussed recent advances in the field of catalytic polymerization of olefins.Over two decades have elapsed since the discovery of the Ziegler-Natta catalyst. Tremendous research effort has been aimed at improving this marvelous catalyst. In twenty-five years since the first publication, more than 15,000 papers and patents on the subject and on related subjects have appeared. This effort has yielded new generations of Ziegler-Natta catalysts with superior activity and stereospecificity. The complexities arising from the heterogeneity of the catalyst, however, have hindered understanding of the catalytic processes which take place on the catalyst surface. Nevertheless, many fundamental features of the catalyst system have now been clarified reasonably well. Recently a highly active homogeneous catalytic system has been developed, which is capable of catalyzing even isotactic polymerization of propene. There is no doubt that this finding will not only contribute to our understanding of the detailed mechanism of polymerization but also stimulate the development of various kinds of tailored polymers. Thus this subject will remain of paramount importance in the development of chemistry and polymer science for a long time to come.

Book excerpt: Surface organometallic chemistry is a new field bringing together researchers from organometallic, inorganic, and surface chemistry and catalysis. Topics ranging from reaction mechanisms to catalyst preparation are considered from a molecular basis, according to which the "active site" on a catalyst surface has a supra-molecular character. This. the first book on the subject, is the outcome of a NATO Workshop held in Le Rouret. France, in May. 1986. It is our hope that the following chapters and the concluding summary of recommendations for research may help to provide a definition of surface organometallic chemistry. Besides catalysis. the central theme of the Workshop, four main topics are considered: 1) Reactions of organometallics with surfaces of metal oxides, metals. and zeolites; 2) Molecular models of surfaces, metal oxides, and metals; 3) Molecular approaches to the mechanisms of surface reactions; 4) Synthesis and modification of zeolites and related microporous solids. Most surface organometallic chemistry has been carried out on amorphous high-surf ace-area metal oxides such as silica. alumina. magnesia, and titania. The first chapter. contributed by KNOZINGER. gives a short summary of the structure and reactivity of metal oxide surfaces. Most of our understanding of these surfaces is based on acid base and redox chemistry; this chemistry has developed from X-ray and spectroscopic data, and much has been inferred from the structures and reactivities of adsorbed organic probe molecules. There are major opportunities for extending this understanding by use of well-defined (single crystal) oxide surfaces and organometallic probe molecules.
