Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the true story of a Dutch sea captain who traveled with an Indian rhinoceros called Clara across 18th century Europe, THE RHINO KEEPER evokes both the thrill of discovery in the archives and the wonder felt by a world in which no European had seen a living rhinoceros. 2022 – College student Andrea Clarkson uncovers a historical mystery while studying abroad in Holland. From hidden desk drawers come unusual historical documents featuring a rhinoceros. On a lichen-covered eighteenth-century grave, the same animal is carved. When an expanding river forces exhumation, what she finds buried there is life-changing. Andrea faces her nightmares to retrieve what a grave robber steals: valuable proof of a long-forgotten history. 1740 – Ship captain Douwemout van der Meer has something not seen in two hundred years: the only rhino in Europe, called Clara. Douwemout and Clara tour Europe, enthralling peasants and queens, hoping to change popular views that rhinos are man-eating beasts. Absolute wonder follows, but when a priest sees idol worship and becomes hell-bent on destroying her, Clara, Douwe, and the lives of her bonded caretakers are at risk. As Douwe becomes protectively dedicated to adventuring with Clara, unexpected love finds him, and his heart starts to tear. Will he choose a life with a traveling wonder-beast forever, or can love exist in many forms for the rhino keeper?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many love Africa and the romance that its wilderness represents, but the stark reality of rhino poaching and the impact it has is vividly played off against the struggle to survive this cruel continent in the crime novel Rhino Blood. In current day Africa, Dean Davidson is the mastermind behind a syndicate that thrives on the slaughter of animals for their horns or tusks. Kevin Barkley, caught with his hand in the cookie jar, needs to redeem himself. He swears revenge and intends to get it. This realistic and stirring story is the start of a journey into the darkest secrets of animal trading and the near extinction of a species. It depicts the brutal reality of poaching and the people involved. Says the author, “The brutality with which rhino and elephant are killed and the tragic circumstances of the people involved was a major inspiration. One of the biggest obstacles I had to face was the emotional involvement in the story. The killing scenes were all very upsetting, and as an animal lover and a person who has never hunted, the reality of what I experienced was just mind blowing.”

Download or read book Settler Ecologies written by Charis Enns and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2024-05-01 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Settler Ecologies tells the story of how settler colonialism becomes memorialized and lives on through ecological relations. Drawing on eight years of research in Laikipia, Kenya, Charis Enns and Brock Bersaglio use immersive methods to reveal how animals and plants can be enrolled in the reproduction of settler colonialism. The book details how ecological relations have been unmade and remade to enable settler colonialism to endure as a structure in this part of Kenya. It describes five modes of violent ecological transformation used to prolong structures of settler colonialism: eliminating undesired wild species; rewilding landscapes with more desirable species to settler ecologists; selectively repeopling wilderness to create seemingly more inclusive wild spaces and capitalize on biocultural diversity; rescuing injured animals and species at risk of extinction to shore up moral support for settler ecologies; and extending settler ecologies through landscape approaches to conservation that scale wild spaces. Settler Ecologies serves as a cautionary tale for future conservation agendas in all settler colonies. While urgent action is needed to halt global biodiversity loss, this book underscores the need to continually question whether the types of nature being preserved advance settler colonial structures or create conditions in which ecologies can otherwise be (re)made and flourish.

Sure, he’s got a fantastic family, which marvelously expands thanks to his evolving relationships with a bunch of fascinating people. He lives in a sprawling ranch house nestled inside fifteen acres of natural wonder, with adventures awaiting at every turn. And the Arbuckle Wilderness Preserve is in his backyard, which is amazing because it positively explodes with opportunities for communion with the animal pals he so adores. But there is trouble in Ronnie’s life, too, and it’s starting to feel like more than just the garden-variety kind of trouble a twelve-year-old boy might expect to run up against. Ronnie is a subject of intense interest for a few neighborhood bullies whose plans for him grow increasingly nefarious as time goes on. In short order, he finds himself the central figure in a national terror plot that threatens not only him and his family, but the country at large. At last, Ronnie draws strength for facing his ordeals from his faith, from his family, and from an enormously affectionate pet skunk who recognized his special qualities from the start. In the end, the lot of them learn a universal lesson about the meaning of love—particularly when it’s applied to folks you were convinced were your enemies all along.
